In this edition of Pinoy Guy Guide, I have taken some time to write up some useful information before you go to this rare, formal occasion of a lifetime.

What to wear

The Promenade, Juniors-Seniors Prom, Seniors Prom, Grad ball or whatever your school calls it is a STRICTLY FORMAL dress code event. That means you shouldn’t be wearing anything less than a coat, a pair of slacks, a long-sleeved dress shirt with matching tie and a polished pair of leather shoes. So before you shell out your parent’s money to buy some formal wear, take time to look at some of the latest and most fashionable suits you can wear.

Black Suit with White Long Sleeves – Classy and Elegant

Nothing beats midnight black coat and slacks with a contrasting white long sleeves paired with a black or gray tie. It’s very classy, elegant and gentlemanly. Suits like these are easily found in SM Department Store and at Onésimus. The usual cost would be something like 3,000+ Pesos for the coat, 1,000 Pesos for the slacks, 1,000 Pesos for the long sleeves dress shirt and around 300 Pesos for the tie.

White Coat with Black Lapels – Modern, Stylish and Standout

The white coat with black lapels (pictured above) should be worn with a tie if you’ll be attending the prom. It is a very modern and stylish coat but I am quite sure that you will have a dilemma on what slacks to buy as either black or white will do. But if you ask me, I am leaning more towards pairing it with black slacks. Sahara has plenty of good ones by the way.

Although this will surely make you stand out, it takes LOTS of guts to wear in a formal occasion like the prom. Chances are you’ll be getting all the stares from the crowd as you might be the ONLY guy wearing white when everyone’s wearing dark suits.

But still, if you think you have what it takes, you can buy a white coat from Onésimus and Markus. The last time I checked, Markus has them for only around 1,500 Pesos.

Tuxedo – The all-time favorite

Another all-time favorite is the tux (short for tuxedo). It is a typical coat that is a bit longer. It gives you a cool, dashing look and trust me, it never fails to amaze the women.

Silver Suit – Elegant, Modern and Stylish

One type of suit that is a hybrid of being elegant and modern is the silver suit that is pictured leftmost above. This is another one that will make you stand out but it does not require the same amount of guts to wear as the white coat because you will still blend with the crowd.

I have seen lots of stores featuring this kind of suit. You can buy them in G2000 and SM Department Stores too. If I was a highschool student again, I’ll probably pick this suit for the prom.

Shoes
Don’t forget to match the color of your leather shoes with the color of your suit. Avoid wearing a pair which is either too pointed or too square-toed – get the right amount of balance that will not sacrifice comfort. Keep in mind that you will be dancing with your date at the ball so make sure that your shoes are not painful to wear.

FAQ: To buy, to rent or to custom tailor?
The answer depends on your budget. If you want to buy, the average budget should be around 5,000 Pesos for ready-to-wear suits. Rentals usually cost 1,500 Pesos and although you’ll save a lot of money, it’s quite hard to find something that you will surely like. Custom-tailored suits, on the other hand, are usually expensive as well but you will get the fit and style just the way you want it.

I recommend that if you have a 5,000 Peso budget, get yourself a ready-to-wear from department stores at least a few weeks before the prom and then have a tailor adjust the length of your pants, dress shirt and coat if they are too long for you. The reason why I recommend this is because it’s good to wear something that is new and stylish. I bet that your money won’t go to waste as you can still use the suit for other formal occasions in the future such as your girlfriend’s debut.

How to groom yourself and look your best on prom day

For us guys, grooming is easy – it mostly involves the hair. I suggest that you get a good haircut at least a week before the prom. Do NOT have a haircut just a day before the prom as you wouldn’t want to look as if you are too excited and too prepared for the occasion. Plus, having a haircut at least a week before will allow your hair to grow a bit in case your stylist or barber ruined your hair.

On the day of the Prom

1. Apply hair wax or gel
Style your hair in a way that is different from the ordinary days at your school. This will surely catch everyone’s attention as if you are a “new” person who underwent a makeover.

2. Shave that mustache and beard
Unless you are blessed with having facial hair that looks good and sexy, it’s best to shave it clean.

3. Shine those shoes
People will look at you from head to toe. Make sure that your shoes are well-polished.

4. Brush your teeth
Make sure you have clean white teeth and fresh breath. I advise you to bring some menthol candies with you at the prom so that your fresh breath will last through the night. Don’t even think about chewing gum – it just doesn’t look good while wearing a suit.

5. Don’t forget the handkerchief
This small piece of clothing is the easiest to forget. Make sure to have it inside your pants before you leave as it will save you embarrassment from sudden sneezing or coughing in front of your prom date.

6. Spray your best perfume
Whether it’s your dad’s or big bro’s, make sure to apply some fragrance before you leave the house. Just make sure to not overdo it.

7. Observe the right manners and proper etiquette
No matter how well-dressed you are, it will not make sense if you don’t observe the proper etiquette during the prom. Pay attention to your table manners. Make sure to behave as an adult and remember that this is a formal occasion.

8. Be a gentleman to your prom date
Whether your prom date is someone you actually invited or a classmate who was randomly paired to you by your teacher despite objections at the back of your head, you still need to be a gentleman and treat her like any woman you are dating.

9. Don’t forget the dance steps
On the day of the prom you should know the cotillion and all other dance steps by heart. You don’t need to be a good dancer – you just need focus to get it right.

10. Have fun!
Remember, it’s a rare event of a lifetime so enjoy it and have fun!

Debuted some time in 2005 in the ABS-CBN TV Series Spirits, this song from Rivermaya quickly made it to the music charts. I remember the first time I heard it, I couldn’t get over the last half of the song. Pay attention to its lyrics below. Very meaningful as it gives a sense of “You and Me against the world no matter what” feeling.

There was a time in 2010 when all of my friend’s status on Facebook was the lyrics of Just the Way You Are. It’s a great song and it tells about what we guys feel when we are with our beautiful girlfriends. Check out the lyrics below which will really make any girl head over heels when this song is sung to them.

Yeah, I know, I know, when I compliment her she won’t believe me
And it’s so, it’s so, sad to think that she don’t see what I see
But every time she asks me do I look ok, I say

3. For those in a complicated relationship and want to leave everything to fate: If It’s Love by Train

There are times in our lives when we meet someone but things just get complicated. I’m talking about instances wherein you have a girlfriend and her parents don’t like you so you break-up or you meet someone at the wrong time when you are committed to someone else and so on. Or times when you like someone so much but are too scared about getting married.

This song from Train is just about all that. I admit that there are parts of the lyrics that are difficult to understand (it’s a deep song actually) but it’s about leaving things to fate.

But I’m afraid when I hear stories about a husband and wife
There’s no happy endings, no Henry Lee
But you are the greatest thing about me

4. For those who sacrificed for a loved one: Iris by Goo Goo Dolls

Let’s face it: Romance is not easy. You may lose friendships, ambitions and even ties with family members for the sake of the person you love. Other people just don’t understand why we give up everything for that one person but when you are truly in love, it seems like the best thing to do.

Now one of the rock songs that really embodies all these in its lyrics is Iris by Goo Goo Dolls. This song is the official soundtrack of City of Angels, a very beautiful movie. The movie, starring Meg Ryan and Nicolas Cage tells a story of an angel who gave up his being an angel (consequently, his immortality) for the sake of the human being he fell in love with. (*Spoiler alert*). The sad thing is that at the end of the story, the girl dies.

You know how your special someone (be it your girlfriend or wife) has that special magic? Like no matter how she fails or hurts you sometimes but then just one kiss, one hug, one gift, one smile and everything’s forgotten? If you can relate to that, the perfect song that says it all is none other than Rihanna and Ne-Yo’s Hate that I Love You.

If you read the lyrics of the song, it describes how the guy is so drunk and somehow hypnotized with being in love. The first part of the song describes how beautiful the girl is – “stealing” his breath away. The chorus then mentions that he could be her “crying shoulder” and so on…

Although dubbed as a hopeless romantic song, trust me guys, if you have a good singing voice and happen to sing this in front of your date or your girlfriend, she’ll immediately go head over heels for you. I have known many women who are so into this song.

I’ll be better when I’m older,
I’ll be the greatest fan of your life.

7. For those whose girlfriend is their bestfriend at the same time: Solo by IYAZ

If you read the entire lyrics and watch the music video as well, this R&B song by IYAZ is all about having a bestfriend who happens to be a girlfriend at the same time. You’ll see in the song that at one point they were bestfriends doing the common things that they like but then she left him and suddenly his now alone (hence the title of the song Solo).

When I first heard this song, I was like “What a catchy song!”. The chorus goes like this:

There’s only one thing
To Do
Three words
For you
(I love you) I love you

It looks like a hilarious pick-up line and I’m sure that if you are too shy to say “I Love You”, singing the lyrics of this song will make it so much easier. I also recommend that you read the entire lyrics of the song. Even the first part is a really good one:

Make me feel better when I’m feeling sad
Tell me I’m special even though I know I’m not
Make me feel good when I hurt so bad

Not to mention that the music video is cool as well. It shows how different couples met. Sweet.

9. For those who want to cheer up their girlfriends: Down by Jay Sean

Think that “Down” is a mere dance song? Think again. This song is also a romantic song. It actually has a candlelight version here. Check out its lyrics below. You’d see it’s perfect if you want to cheer up your girlfriend when she’s sad and lonely.

10. For the couples who broke up but want to get back together: Two is Better than One by Boys Like Girls and Taylor Swift

Before I understood the meaning of this song, I had to read and sing the lyrics multiple times.

I’m finally now believing

That maybe it’s true

Basically, the lyrics tell a story of a couple who are now apart but can’t stop thinking about each other. This song is a good one for those who realize that breaking up was a wrong decision. Can relate to it? Watch the video below.

11. For the couples who are inseparable: I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing by Aerosmith

Of course, how could I ever forget the soundtrack of the movie “Armageddon”? This song by rockstar Aerosmith revolutionized the way rock music is. It’s like they combined a rock song and a love song into one masterpiece.

The song’s lyrics details how at times we can be obsessed with a loved one.

I could lie awake just to hear you breathing
Watch you smile while you are sleeping
Well you’re far away dreaming
I could spend my life in this sweet surrender

It was my first time to hear this song in 2011. It seems to be overplayed in the radio and I initially thought it was a new song. However, when I Googled it, I found that it’s actually an old song,dating back to 1999 and there’s even no music video for it available. Nevertheless, its lyrics are one of the best that you can dedicate to a loved one (especially if you two are both religious).

For all the times I felt cheated
I complained, you know how I love to complain
For all the wrongs I repeated
Though I was to blame, I still cursed that rain

1. Pioneer RSM400DV Mini Component System - If you have a thing for music and love the strong bass sound that you hear in Republiq, Encore or concerts in Araneta or Mall of Asia, then this one is a must-have. Its beat will turn your house into a party club.

2. The Right Amount of friendship and attraction to become lovers – I wrote this article some time before Valentine’s day. It’s kind of a formula which gives you a clue on the right combination of friendship and attraction before you turn your date into a girlfriend.

3. Creative Recreation at Complex Store – Creative Recreation calls their shoes as “lifestyle shoes” – which means they are the shoes you’d like to have around on any occasion. I actually like their products. Even celebrities wear them. However, a particular problem I am seeing is that their shoes which are size 10 and above are always out of stock. It’s sad that I wasn’t available to buy one because they are not available. I am a size 12 by the way.

4. Coat + Jeans = Dressed to Kill –  Wearing a coat together with a pair of jeans and shirt is probably one of the biggest men’s fashion trends this year. It’s a style that is a hybrid between formal and casual wear. It turns out that this style clicked with the majority of the guys.

5. Ever tried an electronic cigarette? – I am not a smoker but I once spotted these electronic cigarettes in Greenhills. But I guess the most important question is – are they truly a better alternative to the regular cigarettes?

6. Wear an Azkals shirt to show your support – These shirts have been around throughout the year and I do hope that they are not just a fad. Let’s continue to wear them and to show our support to the Philippine National Football Team. Thank you Azkals for awakening the football interest of the Filipinos!

7. Manila & Pilipinas on Collezione’s Summer Shorts for Men – These Philippine-themed men’s shorts (though expensive) were the coolest thing to wear last summer.

8. Filipino Men: the most Narcissistic in Asia – This is a very interesting news article that I came across. It says that we Filipino guys are too concerned about our looks? If it’s true, I don’t think it’s really that bad. Let’s just not overdo it.

9. Couple Shirts – It has been a trend for couples this year to wear these couple shirts. It can be cheesy for some but I guess it really depends upon you and your girlfriend.

10. Today’s word is LEGS. Spread the word. – Some shirts are just so green, it makes you grin.

11. Dockers Alpha Khaki for the Alpha Males – Dockers pioneered the khaki revolution this year and the rest of the brands followed. These days, khakis are one of the best alternatives to your blue jeans.

12. Five things every guy ought to know when it comes to relationships – I’d probably say that this is one of my best and most favorite write-ups this 2011. It details the lessons (DO’s and DON’Ts) that I have learned in my past relationships hoping that other guys will learn from them too.

13. Wrangler Men’s Bomber Jacket – The name says it all. This jacket with removable sleeves is the BOMB!

14. The Surfer Dude’s Hairstyle – For 2011, the surfer dude’s hairstyle stood out among all other men’s hairstyles. Mind you that they are great for any season, not just summer.

15. AntiFit: A brand to watch out for – A very promising men’s clothing brand. Check them out when you go to department stores.

16. Feiyue Shoes and Sperry Top-siders now in Manila – Two shoe brands with different styles and different origins that have found their way to the Philippines.

17. Nerdy Glasses – If there is one men’s accessory that became an instant hit this 2011, it would be none other than these Nerdy Glasses.

18. The World Is Just Awesome – Check out these statement shirts brought to us by Regatta and Discovery Channel. It seems that this year, intelligent and smart look is in.

19. International Men’s Day and PGG’s Male Role Models 2011 – Last International Men’s Day, PGG picked Pacquiao, Babbage, apl.de.ap and Beckham as four male role models of 2011. Read the write-up to find out why.

21. Onésimus White Stylish Jacket – I wonder why PGG readers did not like this jacket that much. Maybe because it’s so white that it easily gets dirty? I don’t know. Trust me guys, it looks better if you see it in actual compared to what is shown in the photo.

22. Abercrombie & Fitch Singapore and their Fierce Men’s Cologne – Just this December I witnessed the grand opening of Abercrombie & Fitch Singapore. I just can’t get enough of Abercrombie’s Fierce Men’s Cologne. It is one of the best men’s fragrances that I have smelled and owned so far aside from Lacoste Essential.

23. Show Your Style Season 2 – How could we ever forget the very successful PGG’s Show Your Style Season 2? This 2011, PGG received so many entries from all of you that we had the entire contest running for over two months! Singapore is one of Asia’s fashion hubs and during the time I was there, I was lucky enough to witness the grand opening of Abercrombie & Fitch (A&F) – an American casual clothing retailer. They are a well-known clothing brand internationally and believe it or not, during their opening, lots of people (men and women) were lining up outside their store. The scenery looked like Apple’s launching of the iPhone – yes, they are that popular.

One of the things that attracted people to their store is the very fragrant scent. Apparently, Abercrombie sprayed their men’s cologne named “Fierce” all over the store. It just smelled so good that even people walking right outside the store were wondering who was wearing the perfume. Little did they know that it is the entire shop that was smelling so good.

And the strategy worked very well for Abercrombie & Fitch. Lots of guys (I included) soon found the men’s cologne, queued and bought it.

The sad thing is that there is no Abercrombie & Fitch store here in Manila so I just don’t know where to buy the fragrance once I use up the entire bottle.

Now speaking of A&F clothes, I’d say they are made of good quality but they are a bit pricey for casual clothes. Their shirts cost around 120 SGD (roughly 3,000 Pesos) making them not just an average brand but more of a luxury clothing. Not to mention that their sizes are usually bigger than what we have in Manila as their clothes are catered mostly for Americans so it is understandable that they have larger sizes.

All in all, I would recommend Abercrombie & Fitch for those who have extra money for luxury clothes and for those who need bigger clothes sizes than what we have in the Philippines. Also, I would like to reiterate that Abercrombie’s Fierce Cologne is probably one of the best men’s fragrances I have smelled so far aside from Lacoste Essential.

It’s the same with the Santa Cruz but the difference is that it is made of waxed canvas for better water resistance.

Based from Crocs’ press release, these shoes are for the busy guys who want to wear something relaxing but still smart enough for the office environment. I guess these pairs are perfect for the city guys who commute and are always on the go.
