I think yuppies and students should wear this at the office or in school. You can wear it with or without a dress shirt inside. It will keep you warm and sharp-looking during this rainy season.

This is one of my favorite pairs from Mint and you can tell by the design, the blending of colors plus the suspender-like straps that you won’t be ending your day without receiving compliments. The straps are not really suspenders. They are there for you to drop it on the sides of your waist and to show it off.

Just a word of precaution though. Be careful with those straps. I once found myself stuck on the front door of our house when the straps got entangled with the door knob.

If you’re a sports enthusiast and happen to go over Dasmariñas through Aguinaldo Highway in Cavite, you may want to stop by Dasca Sports Outlet.

Once you’re there, the first thing that will strike you is the sign of their 30% markdown on all items. What’s good is it’s not just for a limited time but offered all year-round.

I’ve been wanting to see the sports boutique after I heard about it from a colleague last March. After passing by to this particular store several times, I finally had the chance to pay visit and roam inside.

Be ready with their racks of Nike shoes.  Many choices on display including Air Jordan shoes and old stocks from the warehouse of Nike Philippines all in good condition. Price ranges from 700 to 4,000 Pesos. Not bad for an original Nike item. You better start checking it out before it becomes out of stock (they also have a branch in Bicutan by the name MJ46 Center). Most shoes are already in last pair.

I was tempted to buy one even if I’m not a big basketball fan. I’ve been looking for something to replace my old rubber shoes. Disappointing though because I have small feet. They only have sizes 9 to 12.

Wait, there’s more. Dasca Sports Outlet also cater jerseys, bags, jackets, Nike Golf polo shirts, visors, Pacman/Pride tees, slip-ons and other sports gears. They got stuff for women too. Take a look at the gallery below and click each photo to zoom.

Aside from Nike, they promote their outlet as a retailer of Adidas and Asics brands. However, I noticed very few Adidas products around the area.

In case you don’t find an item you want, try to go back every after two or three weeks. They’ll fill the store with new stocks by that time. The last time I went there, new shoes were already on display.

I don’t get easily persuaded with discounts since I’m still after the comfort, quality and style.  But I spotted a nice green Mojo flip-flops and bought a pair as an advance birthday gift for myself.

Speaking of skateboarding and men’s fashion, I’ve noticed people, most especially guys, who are wearing skateboarders’ clothes. Some are actual skateboarders, some are enthusiasts and fans and others for the sake of style. There are many stores at the Fort which offer clothes for that skateboarder look but the most popular one that we have in the metro is Zoo York. Click the image below to see their latest collection.

Now given the fact that I see skateboarders everyday at work, I won’t deny that I envy them. I wish I could skateboard like this. It must feel this good and exciting…

Their clothes are definitely for modern guys who love that “porma” look. Most of their styles are really extraordinary and unique. You will find it hard to find similar styles in other shops.

I didn’t have any intentions to buy clothes at that time because as I mentioned, I was there to buy a book and not clothes. But still, I ended up buying a short sleeve stylish dress shirt below which was on sale. It originally costs 1,699 Pesos but they sold it to me for only 999 Pesos.

It looks better in actual and when wearing it than the pictures above – I’m just not so good in photography. Pairing it with khakis or beige slacks is perfection! It also goes well with jeans.

And speaking of Philosophy, they only have two branches. One, as I mentioned, is at Bonifacio High Street (The Fort, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig) and the other is at SM Mall of Asia (Pasay City).

Now here’s the catch. Before my friend and I left, I looked around to see if I could buy anything else. To my surprise, I saw shirts which appear to be “for women”.

I asked them: “Isn’t this a men’s shop? Why are you selling shirts which look like uhm…”

My friend interrupted: “A blouse?”

The sales clerk answered: “Yeah it is a men’s shop.”

Me: “Then why do you have men’s clothes in that section where I bought my polo shirt and women’s clothes over here at the back of your store?”

Sales clerk: “The clothes here at the back are not for women. They are also for men. These shirts which look so flamboyant are for the metrosexuals and gays.”

Me: “So you sell clothes for straight men, metrosexuals and uhm, gays?”

Sales clerk: “Yeah, that’s our niche.”

Me: “WTF!”

My friend laughed out loud. And so did I.

Then I walked out of the shop with my new shirt feeling half the man I used to be.

Why I like it?
Good for smart casual and office attire. Perfect combination with brown slacks or khakis. Best of all, it looks as if you are wearing a vest! Many of my officemates have mistakenly thought that I was wearing a vest on top of my short sleeve polo. I wasn’t. If you would notice, it is just the style that produces that illusion.

Why I like it?
As you know, I have this ash colored jeans here and I don’t wear it that often because it’s difficult to find a shirt that will match the gray color. Good thing I found this shirt as it matches perfectly with that jeans.

Thanks Ash for your email and for the compliment. As you wish, here is my response to you. I have provided here some tips to help you and the other big guys in choosing comfortable and stylish clothes.

1. Don’t buy too loose or too fit.

When chubby guys buy clothes, they have a tendency to buy either clothes which are too fit or too loose to prove that they are not too big. However, I think this is a wrong move in choosing clothes.

If you happen to be a chubby guy, go for clothes which are one size bigger than your actual size BUT choose a slim fit version.

Let’s say you go shopping for a shirt. You know that you are a size XL. So what you need to do is to find nice clothes on size XXL which are SLIM FIT. Once again read: SLIM FIT! So what will happen is that you will end up buying clothes which are just about right for your size and since it is slim fit, it will make you look slimmer.


2. Vertical Patterns

If you have attended Psychology 101 you should remember a topic their called visual illusions. During my freshman year in college, I clearly remember my Psych professor teaching us how to wear good clothes which will make short guys appear taller, fat guys appear slimmer, skinny guys appear bigger and so on and so forth.

I will not go over all of them. But what I remember is that, if you are a chubby guy, you should avoid horizontal prints on clothes because it only will make you look bigger and yes, fatter. Instead, what you should do is to wear vertical prints because the length of the prints will produce an illusion that you are taller and slimmer than you actually are. Choose a variety of vertical prints and not just plain stripes. I’m sure you wouldn’t want to find your wardrobe full of vertically-striped clothes would you?


3. Buy from shops like…

…Jag, Lee, Penshoppe, Bench, Human, RRJ, Tribal etc. They have tons of stylish and inexpensive clothes available up to XL (and in some cases even XXL). I also recommend that you go shopping for clothes in department stores rather than stand-alone shops for variety and for size availability. And if you can find American and foreign brands like TopMan, Van Heusen, Izod and Von Dutch – it would be much better because American sizes are naturally bigger.

You mentioned in your email some brands that you like. However, People are People, Folded & Hung, Refill, Mint, Oxygen and other similar brands rarely have BIG sizes. Yes, their clothes are very modern and chic but their target market is for slim guys. So I suggest you go for the previous ones I have mentioned.


4. Try MaxWear at SM Department Store

If you have some time, try to drop by SM Department Store one of these days. They have a section there called MaxWear and they have a wide variety of inexpensive clothes for big men.  Check out a few photos below:

They have plenty of clothes for both casual and formal wear and most of the designs are the latest ones which you will also see from the other brands.

“I don’t necessarily go for branded and expensive clothes or accessories. Depende naman pag ok ang dating sa akin, mix and match lang and there you go. Mostly I’d go for polo and polo shirts tapos sa jeans semi or medium fit. Minsan kapag medyo malaki yung nabili ko (kasi I grab it na kahit XL ang size kapag SALE), I’d have it re-fitted by a nearby tailor which costs me 50-100 Pesos per piece so malaking tipid na rin!”
