1. For the “You and Me against the world” couple: You’ll Be Safe Here by Rivermaya

Debuted some time in 2005 in the ABS-CBN TV Series Spirits, this song from Rivermaya quickly made it to the music charts. I remember the first time I heard it, I couldn’t get over the last half of the song. Pay attention to its lyrics below. Very meaningful as it gives a sense of “You and Me against the world no matter what” feeling.

2. For your very beautiful girlfriend: Just the Way You Are by Bruno Mars

There was a time in 2010 when all of my friend’s status on Facebook was the lyrics of Just the Way You Are. It’s a great song and it tells about what we guys feel when we are with our beautiful girlfriends. Check out the lyrics below which will really make any girl head over heels when this song is sung to them.

Yeah, I know, I know, when I compliment her she won’t believe me
And it’s so, it’s so, sad to think that she don’t see what I see
But every time she asks me do I look ok, I say

When I see your face, there’s not a thing that I would change

3. For those in a complicated relationship and want to leave everything to fate: If It’s Love by Train

There are times in our lives when we meet someone but things just get complicated. I’m talking about instances wherein you have a girlfriend and her parents don’t like you so you break-up or you meet someone at the wrong time when you are committed to someone else and so on. Or times when you like someone so much but are too scared about getting married.

This song from Train is just about all that. I admit that there are parts of the lyrics that are difficult to understand (it’s a deep song actually) but it’s about leaving things to fate.

But I’m afraid when I hear stories about a husband and wife

But you are the greatest thing about me

4. For those who sacrificed for a loved one: Iris by Goo Goo Dolls

Let’s face it: Romance is not easy. You may lose friendships, ambitions and even ties with family members for the sake of the person you love. Other people just don’t understand why we give up everything for that one person but when you are truly in love, it seems like the best thing to do.

Now one of the rock songs that really embodies all these in its lyrics is Iris by Goo Goo Dolls. This song is the official soundtrack of City of Angels, a very beautiful movie. The movie, starring Meg Ryan and Nicolas Cage tells a story of an angel who gave up his being an angel (consequently, his immortality) for the sake of the human being he fell in love with. (*Spoiler alert*). The sad thing is that in the end of the story, the girl dies.

You know how your special someone (be it your girlfriend or wife) has that special magic? Like no matter how she fails or hurts you sometimes but then just one kiss, one hug, one gift, one smile and everything’s forgotten? If you can relate to that, the perfect song that says it all is none other than Rihanna and Ne-Yo’s Hate that I Love You.

If you read the lyrics of the song, it describes how the guy is so drunk and somehow hypnotized with being in love. The first part of the song describes how beautiful the girl is – “stealing” his breath away. The chorus then mentions that he could be her “crying shoulder” and so on…

Although dubbed as a hopeless romantic song, trust me guys, if you have a good singing voice and happen to sing this in front of your date or your girlfriend, she’ll immediately go head over heels for you. I have known many women who are so into this song.

I’ll be better when I’m older,
I’ll be the greatest fan of your life.

7. For those whose girlfriend is their bestfriend at the same time: Solo by IYAZ

If you read the entire lyrics and watch the music video as well, this R&B song by IYAZ is all about having a bestfriend who happens to be a girlfriend at the same time. You’ll see in the song that at one point they were bestfriends doing the common things that they like but then she left him and suddenly his now alone (hence the title of the song Solo).

When I first heard this song, I was like “What a catchy song!”. The chorus goes like this:

There’s only one thing

Three words
For you
(I love you) I love you

It looks like a hilarious pick-up line and I’m sure that if you are too shy to say “I Love You”, singing the lyrics of this song will make it so much easier. I also recommend that you read the entire lyrics of the song. Even the first part is a really good one:

Make me feel better when I’m feeling sad
Tell me I’m special even though I know I’m not
Make me feel good when I hurt so bad

Not to mention that the music video is cool as well. It shows how different couples met. Sweet.

9. For those who want to cheer up their girlfriends: Down by Jay Sean

Think that “Down” is a mere dance song? Think again. This song is also a romantic song. It actually has a candlelight version here. Check out its lyrics below. You’d see it’s perfect if you want to cheer up your girlfriend when she’s sad and lonely.

10. For the couples who broke up but want to get back together: Two is Better than One by Boys Like Girls and Taylor Swift

Before I understood the meaning of this song, I had to read and sing the lyrics multiple times.

That maybe it’s true

Basically, the lyrics tell a story of a couple who are now apart but can’t stop thinking about each other. This song is a good one for those who realize that breaking up was a wrong decision. Can relate to it? Watch the video below.

11. For the couples who are inseparable: I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing by Aerosmith

Of course, how could I ever forget the soundtrack of the movie “Armageddon”? This song by rockstar Aerosmith revolutionized the way rock music is. It’s like they combined a rock song and a love song into one masterpiece.

The song’s lyrics details how at times we can be obsessed with a loved one.

It was my first time to hear this song in 2011. It seems to be overplayed in the radio and I initially thought it was a new song. However, when I Googled it, I found that it’s actually an old song,dating back to 1999 and there’s even no music video for it available. Nevertheless, its lyrics are one of the best that you can dedicate to a loved one (especially if you two are both religious).

For all the times I felt cheated
I complained, you know how I love to complain
For all the wrongs I repeated
Though I was to blame, I still cursed that rain
I didn’t have a prayer, didn’t have a clue

6. Wear an Azkals shirt to show your support – These shirts have been around throughout the year and I do hope that they are not just a fad. Let’s continue to wear them and to show our support to the Philippine National Football Team. Thank you Azkals for awakening the football interest of the Filipinos!

7. Manila & Pilipinas on Collezione’s Summer Shorts for Men – These Philippine-themed men’s shorts (though expensive) were the coolest thing to wear last summer.

8. Filipino Men: the most Narcissistic in Asia – This is a very interesting news article that I came across. It says that we Filipino guys are too concerned about our looks? If it’s true, I don’t think it’s really that bad. Let’s just not overdo it.

9. Couple Shirts – It has been a trend for couples this year to wear these couple shirts. It can be cheesy for some but I guess it really depends upon you and your girlfriend.

10. Today’s word is LEGS. Spread the word. – Some shirts are just so green, it makes you grin.

11. Dockers Alpha Khaki for the Alpha Males – Dockers pioneered the khaki revolution this year and the rest of the brands followed. These days, khakis are one of the best alternatives to your blue jeans.

18. The World Is Just Awesome – Check out these statement shirts brought to us by Regatta and Discovery Channel. It seems that this year, intelligent and smart look is in.

But even though my past relationships with these women failed and didn’t last, I got something out of it. I learned a few things or let me say lessons that every guy should remember whenever they enter a relationship. So let me share with you guys a few do’s and dont’s that you should know so that you could apply it to your life and relationships as well.


1. Always keep in touch with your girlfriend
This is probably one of the main reasons for my past breakups. I admit I’m not the type of guy who is fond of texting my location and whereabouts. It’s not that I’m cheating on her. It’s just that I’m too lazy to text and the difficulty of typing texts in touchscreen phones these days just got me lazier. Such a lame excuse right?

My advice: After realizing my own mistake, it is now clearer to me than ever that you should always text or call your girlfriend from time to time. Tell her what you are doing, ask her how she is doing, ask her if she’s taken her lunch and so on. Even a simple Facebook wall post saying you miss her (no matter how cheesy it sounds) is enough to make her happy.


2. Learn to accept her for who she is
We all have our own tastes when it comes to the women we date. Personally, I cannot handle naggers, smokers, flirts and girls who have a certain degree of weirdness in them. What if she has a dark past? Say she was a former ecstasy addict, a lesbian or may heaven forbid: a former prostitute? Well that seems a bit exaggerated but it can happen. It’s up to you whether you can accept her for who she is and who she’s not. Your tolerance level to her negative traits is a measure of how long your relationship will last.

My advice: Before making that hot girl your girlfriend, control your crotch and make sure to get to know her well first. If you can accept her for who she is in the same way she accepts you for who you are, then that is the time to make her your girlfriend.


3. Quality time at least once per week
I understand that we can get busy with our own lives. I had my own fair share of overtimes, holidays at work, family and friends getaway, blogging activities and so on. Now with all those things going on with our lives, it’s easy to forget to ask your girlfriend out on a quality date. Sometimes you are just too exhausted that you would rather sleep all day at home than spend time with your girlfriend. But those are not valid reasons to not go out on a date at least once a week and by that “date”, I mean you and your girlfriend alone.

My advice: Although typically you would go out 2-3 times a week with your girlfriend, you two as a couple have to go out at least once a week in case you are truly busy. That’s the minimum. Any fewer than that frequency will cause ugly fights, cold relationships or just the bitter end – breakups.

4. Fighting is healthy
I used to have a girlfriend whom I never had a single fight with. I thought it was awesome but at the same time weird. I realized that the reason why we never had a fight is that we were both keeping to ourselves secretly what we do not like about each other. That was until that fateful day came when we just both exploded in angst and we had a HUGE fight. That single huge fight ended our relationship.

My advice: Openness is very important in any relationship. Telling your partner how you feel, what you like and what you do not like is needed in order to know each other better and to make the relationship last. It is also necessary to set some rules and guidelines between you and your girlfriend. Things as simple as what time you expect her to be home, what clothes she is forbidden to wear, how many bottles of beer she allows you to drink on a boys night out are all necessary so that you fulfill each other’s expectations.


5. Badmouthing is a big NO-NO!
This is related to number 4. Sometimes when we get into fights or quarrels with our girlfriends, we tend to vent those emotions to our beer buddies or other male colleagues in order to get some consolation and to ask for advice. We might even go overboard by badmouthing our own girlfriends – telling everyone how much of a bitch or slut she is and the list goes on. Worse, we might even tell our family (our parents or siblings) in advance that we have broken up with her and that we swear not to get back with her no matter what. Then suddenly, after a few days, you and your girlfriend resolve things and voila – you two are back in each other’s arms.

Now what will your beer buddies, colleagues and family think once you tell them that you have fixed things with your girlfriend and you two are back together? They will think that you are such an idiot! And the worst part of it is that your girlfriend already has a permanent mark in their minds that she is a bitch, a slut, or whatever-bad-adjective-you-used-to-badmouth-her-while-you-two-were-having-a-quarrel. A fugly situation isn’t it?

My advice: Whenever you and your girlfriend have a fight, please keep it between the two of you and resolve it on your own. Or if you just can’t and you find that you need to tell someone to preserve your own sanity, then open up to your most trusted male friend (probably a best friend) who understands you. NOTE: I said trusted male friend because most of the time, female friends cause much gossip you wouldn’t want.

Also, as much as possible, do not open up your girlfriend problems with your parents or siblings unless you are 100% sure that you no longer want to get back with her again. Parents and siblings have a tendency to remember everything you say about your girlfriend and they will naturally take your side (which on one hand is a good thing). On the other hand, the bad thing happens when you and your girlfriend get back together and subsequently get married. Well guess what? Your family will always remember her as someone who is not completely trustworthy for hurting you in the past. Not a very ideal scenario between your wife and her in-laws isn’t it?

So there you have it. These are the five things every guy ought to know when it comes to relationships. I have learned this the hard way through my own experiences and some from my peers. On the bright side, I realized, that these shirts make good presents for monthsaries or anniversaries. Your girlfriend will really appreciate your effort for something like this. Just make sure that when you wear this shirt, your girlfriend is always beside you. Otherwise, when she’s not around or when you’re all by yourself walking alone, the statement on the shirt doesn’t really make sense.

Let me share with you the 3 kinds of girls I’ve dated in the past and the level of friendship and attraction we’ve had. I’ll just use false names to avoid any form of drama and more importantly, to be equally fair with them. Perhaps you could relate to my story and realize the same things that I did about having just the right amount of friendship and attraction before transforming your date to a girlfriend.

Sarah (100% friendship, 20% attraction)
She’s a cute and funny girl.  So funny and easy to get along with. She thinks the way I do and just one look at each other, we already have an idea of what we wanted to say or laugh at without saying a word.

You know that kind of girl you’ve known since you were a kid? Sarah is one of them. We both know what we like and what we don’t. In fact, our friendship is so deep that it would be very awkward for us to take that friendship to the next level. So at 100% friendship and only 20% attraction we are just that. Close friends -  no more, no less. We both understand that it’s the best thing to do to preserve the friendship and to keep us both sane.


Jessica (20% friendship, 100% attraction)
Jessica is one hot girl. Hot in a way that you get excited everytime the two of you go on dates.

Unfortunately, she’s the type of girl that is pure physical attraction only.

When we started dating, it was fun. Initially, it felt so good to tag along someone who seems to be catching everyone’s stares – but that feeling didn’t last for long.  Sooner or later, things didn’t work out. Having 100% attraction to her and only 20% friendship, I figured out that we didn’t really have a connection for us to last. Imagine this scenario. I like music she doesn’t like. She likes food that I don’t like. I like to do stuff she doesn’t like and vice versa. Even though we were attracted to one another (physically, that is), we realized we just had too many differences. The lack of connection felt like I was going to go nutts so we both decided to call it quits.


Nicole (60% friendship, 80% attraction)
Nicole is a gorgeous girl who likes many things that I do. She seems to be just the right combination of Jessica and Sarah. We started out as good friends and we just had the same likes and dislikes. Although we had differences, they were not deal breakers.

So she became my girlfriend back then. Then one day I started pondering why she seemed better than the first two. I realized that we just had the right amount of friendship and attraction to become a good couple (60% friendship, 80% attraction).

Now 60% friendship, 80% attraction isn’t really a hard rule. So how do you find out if you have just the right amount of chemistry with your date? Here are three indicators:

1. 50-75% similarity
I believe that for any relationship to work, you should have at least 50-75% similarity with her. It’s very important to have a common set of likes or dislikes that you two have. Whether same sports, same music or same hobbies, doing common things would make romance and your bonding last.

Now going beyond “75% similarity” might be boring. You might just be better off as friends like Sarah and I were.

2. You are mysterious enough to turn her on and vice versa
Remember back in highschool? We always get infatuated with that hottie cheerleader in our P.E. class and as soon as we get to know her true character, the mystery is gone and instead of being turned on more, we usually get turned off?

Same is true with the woman you are dating. Is she mysterious enough to keep you interested? Do you get more attracted the more she reveals her true self? If your answer is yes, then you are good to go to the next level.

But how about you? Are you mysterious enough?

I remember Nicole told me once that one of the main reasons she found me attractive was my being mysterious. Mystery is sexy. It is one of the major factors that keeps us attracted to the other person. The best advice I can give when you are dating someone new is to preserve your being mysterious by not divulging too much information about yourself all at once. Give little details one at a time so that you maintain that chemistry and attraction. It is what keeps women interested and draws the line between friendship and lovers.

3. Honesty
Confidence and honesty come in pairs. If you are comfortable and confident enough to say to her what you like and what you do NOT like and she could also do the same, then you have the right amount of friendship and it is time to level up. Now once you reach that point wherein you are both open and honest to each another, you will find that it would be so much easier to utter that question that makes us guys extremely sweaty and nervous: “Would you be my girlfriend?”. I’m sure by that time you will certainly get a “YES!”

How about the scent? Davidoff Champion has one of the most masculine scents I have ever smelled on a perfume. It actually has some small notes which smell like an expensive aftershave – a smell that women like on men. Check out Davidoff Champion TV commercial below:





And thanks to that commercial, I just recently learned that Davidoff is pronounced as “Dah-vee-doff”, not the usual “Day-vee-doff”.

By the way, in case you are interested to buy, I think that there is a promo now wherein you’d get a free Davidoff headphones if you buy the big bottle of Champion. Not sure if this promo is still up but I was told that this was only good while the stock of headphones last.

Five months later, we now feel better after we have seen the superb performance of the Philippine Football Team at the recently held AFF Suzuki Football Cup. I’m proud of the Philippine Team. I wish them more successes in the future. And yes, I still dream of that day when football will be as popular as basketball in the Philippines!

18. GBX Uraha Slip-On shoes – I should give this shoe an award. “Best Casual Shoe of 2010″. It feels so comfortable to wear that I find myself picking it up from my shoe rack everytime I go out on dates and gimmicks.

19. Would you date/marry a girl who has the same surname as yours? – It is not impossible to fall in love with a girl who has the same surname as yours. So I asked PGG guys this question and as it turns out, surnames don’t matter at all as long as you are 100% sure that you are not relatives.

20. Samsung Wave. Brilliant! – My first Samsung, full touchscreen phone. I think it still has one of the best screens I’ve seen on a cellphone. Truly brilliant!

21. Solo’s Cartoonist Collection and Model Search – Cartoons in men’s clothes? Check out this unique trend from Solo.

22. Pinoy Guy Guide and Giordano Giveaway – Giordano partnered with Pinoy Guy Guide this year for an early Christmas giveaway. I am sure that the winners enjoyed their prizes this holiday season.

23. Ignorance is Boring – These statement shirts from National Geographic Channel and Regatta are a major success. Everyone is wearing them.

24. Awesome finds at American Rag Cie – A stylish shop which combines stylish brands. I never noticed them until recently.

25. Get HOT with No Mercy Underwear – This flaming hot men’s underwear is a bestseller at the PGG Store.

26. Get that Red Belt! – Colorful casual belts are definitely in. The most popular of all colored casual belts are the red ones. I am sure this trend will continue in 2011.

27. Are those vampire contact lenses? – Lots of guys these days are wearing contact lenses similar to the vampire characters in Twilight and Imortal.

28. Nokia N8: Cheap compared to its predecessors? – A feature-packed phone from the still #1 mobile phone maker Nokia. However, will N8 stand a chance against other popular smartphones such as the iPhone and the Androids?

29. Vandalism and a Woman’s virginity – I published this post after seeing a funny graffiti inside a bus. It’s quite a laugh.

30. Porsche Design: Luxury Men’s Wear – The most luxurious and expensive brand of men’s clothing I have actually seen. If you are rich like Manny Pacquiao, why not?


Some of the things also worth noting this past year is the new and improved layout of PGG, increasing number of Facebook likes, increasing number of PGG forum members and subscribers and new products from the PGG Store.

Last Monday, I was running late for work. I took a bus and while I was sitting I noticed a graffiti, sort of a vandalism text written on the headrest of the seat in front of me. Take a quick look at the photo below and try to read what is written.

It reads:
Wanted: Girlfriend
Requirement: Original copy of Virginity.

LOL. Funny indeed and I laughed even though I was already late for work.

In the first place, is there such a thing as “Original copy of Virginity”? And let me ask you guys, how important is a woman’s virginity for you?

This random question popped in my head just recently. Why? Because I have a very rare surname. And for my entire life I have never met a non-relative who has the same surname as mine. But guess what? A new hire at our office (who happens to be pretty) has the same surname as I have. She’s not a relative. We tried to trace each other’s family tree to see if we have a common relative, but there was none.

Then my boss teased me saying: “You know what, you are single and so she is. She is pretty and I think you two would make a good couple.”

I replied: “I know, right? But I’m having second thoughts about it because we share the same surname. What if we got married? It would be something like “Santos-Santos nuptials”. Not a good idea. And for some reason I feel like it’s incest.” LOL.

(by the way, Santos is not my surname. It’s just an example I made up.)

After our conversation, my boss laughed boisterously.

It sounds funny. But I am having lots of reservations about the idea. Not that it’s a big deal really. It’s just that my surname is really rare and I don’t want to wake up one day only to discover that I might have married a distant cousin. I remember I even asked this same question at the PGG Forums and PGG Facebook Fan page and I got interesting replies.
