I’m saying sorry in advance cos this won’t always go to plan
Though we don’t mean to take our love for granted
It’s in our nature to forget what matters
How when the going is getting tough
And we’re all about giving up
Things that we never thought we’d gonna say, gonna say them
Things that we never thought we’d play, gonna play them
It ain’t perfect, but it’s worth it
And it’s always getting better
It’s gonna take some time to get it right

Cause I’m still learning the art of love
I’m still trying to not mess up
So whenever I stumble let me know
You need to spell it out
You need to spell it out
You need to spell it out
You need to spell it out for me
Cause I’m still trying to learn the art of love

If I forget to get the door
Remind you that you’re beautiful
I know my detail requires more attention
If I ever hurt you it’s not my intention
Cause we’re gonna make our mistakes
Find out how much your heart can take
But I know that you got my back
And baby I got yours

Cause I’m still learning the art of love
I’m still trying to not mess up
So whenever I stumble let me know
You need to spell it out
You need to spell it out
You need to spell it out
You need to spell it out for me
Cause I’m still trying to learn the art of love

Sometimes I’m gonna miss
I’m still learning how to give
I’m not giving up
I’m still learning how to love
Learning how to love…
Learning how to love

Cause I’m still learning the art of love
I’m still trying to not mess up
So whenever I stumble let me know
You need to spell it out
You need to spell it out
You need to spell it out
You need to spell it out for me
Cause I’m still trying to learn the art of love
(The art of love)

Still learning (art of love)
Still learning (art of love)
Still learning (art of love)
Still trying to learn the art of love
Still learning, I’m still learning (art of love)
Still learning (art of love)
I’m gonna get it sometimes, cause I’m still learning
Still learning (art of love)
Still learning (art of love)
Still learning (art of love)
The art art of love

When it comes to the dating arena, the last thing every guy would want is to find himself in the friend zone. Because when you get into the friend zone, it is almost impossible to get out of it. There is no turning back and it’s time to say goodbye to your prospect girlfriend because she is now just your ordinary girl friend (take note of the space).

What’s the friend zone anyway? If you aren’t familiar read this. You see, women classify every guy they meet into two. They group all guys who are a potential date and a potential boyfriend into the “dating zone”. And they group all those guys who are a good friend, a possible best friend or a brother to the so-called “friend zone” – somewhere you will never want to be in for the hottie you’re dating.

I’d like to share with you the things I have observed and learned so that you will not get into that dreadful friend zone.

1. Mystery is the keyword
Mystery is a turn-on. Don’t share too much information about yourself initially. My girlfriend tells me that when I was courting her there is really something in me that keeps her interested. She wants to know me better. Reason? I didn’t spill too much information during our first few dates. Guys who share too much on the first few meetings end up as just friends with the girl. But guys who preserve the mystery keeps the dating game exciting.

2. Don’t talk about relationships with her
This is a no-brainer, I’m sure. Why would you even talk about dating, relationships or even her ex with her? You see, these stories are reserved for her girl friends, not for you (that is, if you still want to fall into her “dating zone”). You should talk about topics involving the two of you, the places where you would want to take her and at least slowly give her hints that you like her.

3. Don’t always make yourself available
Don’t get me wrong on this one. Of course you should ALWAYS be there for her when you feel that she likes you already. But during the initial stages of getting-to-know each other, your availability can determine your fate. Remember, friends are the people who are always around. So if you are always around her you might just fall into the friend zone – so don’t overdo it. Be there when she least expects it and surprise her with chocolates at her desk and I promise you won’t regret it.

4. Don’t be a good puppy
A good puppy does everything their owner tells them. Guys who just say yes and yes to everything she says are wimps and she knows that they are boring to be with. Don’t forget that you have your own set of beliefs and mindset so stand for what you believe in and what you want. Learn when to agree and when to disagree. You’d be surprised that she will get more attracted to you because of your innate confidence.

5. Say how you feel but…
Not too early or you will freak her out. Saying how you feel is the most effective way to NOT fall into the friend zone. Want to know why? Because you have said clearly from the start what your intentions are and that is to be her boyfriend and not just friends. This is important so that she knows what to expect and won’t mistakenly place you in her circle of guy friends. Just make sure that the timing is right.

How about you? What have you learned about the friend zone? Share your own tips or experiences, I’m sure you can add more to the list.

Basically there is this new study that concludes that men lose their minds speaking to pretty women. As a matter of fact, in the write-up it was said that one guy was so struck on impressing an attractive woman he had never met before, that he could not remember his address when she asked him where he lived.

In a way, I think this is true to most of us guys. When a gorgeous girl comes our way, we either find ourselves speechless, saying the wrong things or acting awkwardly around the girl. Later on we talk to ourselves after the encounter saying “Why didn’t I get her number?”, “Damn, I said the wrong thing…” or “Why didn’t I invite her for coffee?”.

I guess this has been a problem for most of us guys since time immemorial. It’s part of the male instinct, but I think we should be able to learn to shrug it off and regain our composure and confidence to be able to say and do the right things in front of a hot woman. I know it is difficult to master, but always keep in mind that women want confidence – No more, no less.

So how about you? Ever experienced saying or doing weird things after meeting an attractive female?

Back in October, I talked about the advantages and disadvantages of speed dating. In this post, PGG contributor Tim, will share his own experience on speed dating. Read on to find out how it was like.

We all know that in most Western countries the art of Speed Dating is no longer new in the ear since it is already a regular, or more of a usual event that happens once in a while. In the Philippine setting meanwhile, not every person is aware of what Speed Dating is all about, and how it really works.

I had my first taste of Speed Dating pre-Valentines of 2009 in an affair conducted by ICE productions called, “Single Hearts”. It was my first, and I had zero idea on how the whole process actually works. For all I know is that everyone will sit and will have the chance to do the talking with different girls for a short period of time, and after which either the male or the female will make their move to the next seat facing another potential date.

Try to recall your first day in college where orientations for block sections are usually conducted in order to get to know your new peers well. The same thing applies in Speed Dating. First things first, registration is needed in order to join the event. Second, you have to send your name, contact number and picture –usually via e-mail – , and not to mention, you have to be SINGLE (to be fair) in order to qualify for the game. Notification follows after which.

On the actual event, checking of names at the registration booth happens first, then name tags would be distributed after. These name tags are required to be worn by each individual during the entire process of the game.

Moving on inside the venue, speed daters are usually gathered where seats are already aligned and arranged. Male speed daters must be seated face-to-face with female speed daters. During the idle time of waiting for the other speed daters, don’t be surprised if some speed daters who are already in the venue would do the initiation to introduce themselves. You could do the same and eventually notice that some speed daters go to the event alone. So don’t be intimidated whenever you feel like approaching the cute girl seated across you.

In the event when everyone is already present and the list is in complete attendance, the host will most likely conduct several parlor games for all speed daters. The purpose of which is to build teamwork, and moreover to break the ice and barricades hindering each individual. Games usually allow each speed dater the chance to chat with their fellow teammates, as if you are just chatting with an acquaintance from high school while playing.

After the parlor games, the host will then start the whole essence of speed dating. Just imagine the setting of a tea party where seats are all facing each other. In my case, the females are the ones who must transfer to the next seat, every after the host says so. So usually a few minutes are given for each couple to get to know each other, and what amazes me the most is how you get to know the character, persona and little background of several people in a short span of time. I felt like I was a talking machine that needs to talk non-stop because once the actual speed dating starts, there will be no water breaks.

My mouth and butt literally hurt badly after. But the thought that you get to indulge yourself in something crazy and spontaneous like this (picture out talking to like 50 girls non-stop and getting to know the details and brief descriptions and backgrounds of each after the other) blew all the pain off. In formal speed dating, the host usually gives away a card to each speed dater for them to list down the girls that they find attractive. The host will usually conduct a compatibility test if who matches whom, and after which they give away the number of your match. This means to say, it must be a win-win situation where both parties agree that both of them are a possible match.

In my speed dating experience though, after the chitchat, a paper is attached at the back of each speed dater and any random girls can write at my back without me knowing which of the numerous messages written belongs to whom. After the writing segment, you will get the chance to learn the views, perspectives, comments, and opinions of the girls towards your personality, performance and being. In my case, I received positive feedback.

The event usually wraps up with awards for the best dressers, good-looking couple, potential couples and the likes. Sponsored products are given away after which, and if you are gutsy enough, you could start exchanging digits to other speed daters.

At the end of the day though, whether you still label yourself as single or not, speed dating does not really guarantee relationships, yet you will learn that it is a very safe and healthy environment to meet potential partners, and even lovers.

For our PGG readers, have you ever joined speed dating? How was it like?

An officemate of mine forwarded to me this true story regarding some guy’s experience with a gold-digger in a bar somewhere in Makati. The story is written in Taglish. As much as Pinoy Guy Guide is written almost fully in English, I quoted the story “as is” since I figured out that translating it all in English would make the story look like it’s not in the Philippine setting. So just read on. I’m sure you’ll find the story interesting as much as I did.

My friend and I decided to have a drink in a bar in Makati. Kararating nya lang galing States and looks pretty “boring” pero in reality he belongs to one of the most prominent families here in the Philippines. He looks good and neat so medyo lapitin. There was this good-looking girl who was staring at him at the bar where we were just talking about stuff and the HS times we had. Cars, girls and the likes. Kwentong lalake lang. Tapos biglang lumapit yung girl and this is how it went.

Girl: Hi
Friend: Hello
Girl: Haven’t seen you before, tiga dito ka ba?
Friend: Not really. Just hanging around I guess.
* Tumunog yung phone ng friend ko which was a low-end phone.

Girl: Ay! Why is your phone like that?
Friend: Why?
Girl: Kasi I don’t date guys who have lower phone models than I have eh. I have the iPhone kasi.
Friend: So why did you bother approaching me?

*Nakialam na ko
Me: Miss, if you intend to look for a gold mine, go find it somewhere else. We’re just enjoying ourselves here.
Girl: Hay naku! Poor people. Sayang gwapo pa naman kasama mo kaso…
Friend: Just leave ok?
*So umalis na yung girl. To get off some steam, lumabas kami ng bar to smoke. So kwento kwento pa rin kami. Lumabas din yung girl to meet up with some friends of hers (hot girls, if I may add). Then we just felt that we were their topic. Sobrang na bad trip na yung friend ko so we decided to pay the bill and head somewhere else. While we were waiting for the car na pina-park namin sa valet, lumapit na naman yung girl.

Girl: So you’re waiting for a cab? How cheap.

* Di nalang namin pinansin yung girl. Then nagkamurahan na dahil sa sobrang galit ng friend ko. Yung girl kasi medyo high na lasing e. Then lumayo na ulit sya. Tapos may dumating na guy na naka Corolla. Then nagpabayo yung guy dun sa parking lot. Medyo malayo kasi yun pinag-parkan ng valet so medyo natagalan. Sumigaw na naman yun girl sa amin ng ganito.

Girl: Do you have this ha?
* Then parang nagpapaka show girl sya sa kotse nung guy. Finally dumating na yung car ng friend ko and guess what? It’s a Audi R8. Napatanga yung babae at biglang lapit na naman.

Girl: Uy! I’m sorry na. Sige na you can take me home na! We’ll have so much fun.
Friend: Get off my effin face!
* Sumakay na kami and my friend just looked at them with a grin sabay zooom…. Buti na lang my friend kept his cool a little bit kasi kung ako yun baka sinampal ko. Muntik na nga e.

And in case you were wondering what an Audi R8 is…

It’s IronMan’s car in the movie. I wish I saw the girl’s reaction upon seeing this car. So guys next time, beware of gold-diggers!

Unless you have the looks and popularity of Brad Pitt, the body of a Greek god and the richness of Bill Gates - you will never find a date if you're a shy guy especially in the not-so-liberated Philippines.

Unless you have the looks and popularity of Brad Pitt, the body of a Greek god and the richness of Bill Gates – you will never find a date if you’re a shy guy especially in the not-so-liberated Philippines.

But first things first, what’s a “torpe” anyway? For the guys out there who didn’t grow up in the Philippines, “torpe” is the term used to describe a guy, who is so in love with a girl but is too shy to admit his feelings for her. So why will it not work? Here are the major reasons why:

1. Women don’t make the first move
You could wish all you want that she’d be the one to make the first move but this is unlikely to happen especially in the Philippines where girls who make the first move are branded as flirty. That’s a fact!

2. Women don’t know what’s in your mind
I used to have a female friend who likes this guy. Now this guy is also my friend and I know that he likes her too. What’s the problem? Well he’s “torpe” and couldn’t even look at the girl straight in the eye. And guess what? Nothing happened between the two of them.

3. Women hate mind games
That’s right. Women also hate mind games the way we do. They hate guessing how you feel for her in the same way that we hate guessing what she feels. You can give all the hints that you like her (e.g. touching her hand, saying sweet compliments) but this will be of no use unless you tell her exactly how you really feel.

To prove this, I’ve read somewhere over the Internet that lots of women are searching Google for the phrase “How to tell if a guy likes you”. Well wouldn’t you feel terrible if the girl you like is the one searching Google for that? Remember: it’s only you who could give her the answer so better tell her how you feel before she loses interest in you.

4. Women want confidence, not shyness
Do you ever wonder why it’s a common notion that women like bad boys? It’s because bad boys have the confidence to admit their feelings towards women without fear of being rejected or so. After all, confidence is all that it really takes. If you get rejected, get over it and move forward.

I remember MYMP’s “Torpe Song #5″. It’s really a great song that describes what a torpe guy is really like. It gives the torpe guys the ego-booster needed. Check out the lyrics here.

The year 2008 has been a great year for Pinoy Guy Guide. There has been lots of developments in men’s clothing and lifestyle and PGG is very happy to have delivered you the latest updates on these. There were also several dating and lifestyle tips that have been published the year round to serve as a guide for guys out there. These tips are based on my experience and also that of our contributors’.

As 2008 comes to a close, let’s take a look at some of the significant articles on men’s fashion and lifestyle for the past year:

1. 8% body fat for great abs – I wrote this article sometime in January and it looks like a lot of guys out there have been bookmarking this post as it is very important for gym-goers to know how much body fat is needed to be lost to show that six pack!

2. Boardshorts for men – Last summer saw an influx of boardshorts for swimming. And it seems that every guy who went to the beach is wearing one.

3. Adidas Philippine Track Jacket – Lots of men (and women) are dying to get their own Adidas Philippine Track Jacket. However, it’s extinct nowadays.

4. Samsung Armani P520 – This year we saw mobile phone manufacturer, Samsung, introduce their fashion phone P520. It’s co-branded with Armani and we know that Armani is mostly a men’s fashion brand. So as expected, this phone will most likely appeal to men. Though I’ve seen it available in shops, I haven’t seen anyone owning this phone yet. Perhaps too pricey?

7. PBB haircut in the mainstream – This has got to be one of the most odd haircuts you’d ever see. But ever since the guys of reality-show Pinoy Big Brother have sported this look, almost everyone at that time copied that hairstyle. Unfortunately, after the PBB show ended, the hairstyle seem to have died too.

In this featured article, PGG writer Jessie, tells us excellent gift ideas for women this Christmas season. So if you’re lost for ideas, this one is a must-read!

Christmas is just around the corner. Best time of the year to shop like crazy. I noticed that a lot of guys out there are clueless when it comes to buying gifts for their queen. Let Pinoy Guy Guide help you out! Read on to know what’s inside the mind of girls this holiday season.

Guys shopping | Image credit: Asimulator

Before anything else, you need to know this: Lots of guys shop as much as girls do. I firmly believe that and that’s nothing to be ashamed of. Just because we males don’t go to Ayala/SM malls doesn’t mean that we don’t like to shop for stuff. We do it in our own private way. We’re pretty low key when it comes to splurging our hard-earned money on stuff that we like. We don’t walk around flamboyantly carrying 6 different paper bags around our shoulders when we shop. We get in, get our stuff, and get out. That’s how we roll. But girls are the best when it comes to shopping, so if you can get your sister, close friend or female co-worker to join you in your gift-hunting escapade, the better!

GADGETS

- If you have the money/credit to buy your girl a cool new device, go for it. Guys are tech freaks by default so shopping for a ‘techie’ gift won’t be a problem. Cellphones are always numero uno on the list. MP3 pillows are also a hot commodity. But if you really want to push it to the next level – a brand new laptop can bring tears into their eyes. Awww…

BAGS/SHOES/COSMETICS/PERFUMES

- This combo doesn’t always work for girls. Disaster may strike if you picked the wrong shoe size or chose a ‘not-so-favorite’ bag color, but if you did some research and you know the details, you’ll be able to pull it off. If you’re still hesitant to do the shopping yourself then it’s better to give them a gift card to their favorite store than giving them something they wouldn’t be caught dead wearing.

Shops to visit: Topshop, Bayo, F&H, Kamiseta, Nike Women, Mango, People are People and Rustan’s
For cosmetics: Nars, Shu Uemura, Philosophy and Mac

DAY AT THE SPA

- Truth be told, women love to be pampered. Taking them out to a fancy spa of their choice can mean a lot to them. But please guys, don’t go cheap on women. They have a way to know. Give them all-access to the spa! Then a nice dinner at Fridays after her relaxing time at the spa ain’t so bad. In my opinion, the best spa in the country right now is still ‘The Spa’. They have branches spreaded all over the region which provide the widest variation of services for different types of people.

VACATION PACKAGE

- Another kind of gift that needs a lot of moolah and preparation. But the rewards are very high and it serves both the giver and the recipient well. Pick a destination that SHE likes. Believe me when I say this, but girls are natural born beach bums. Boracay and Siargao can be a little too cliche for her (and its definitely jampacked at this time of the year) so going someplace else is worth giving a shot. Wherever it is, what’s important is you BOTH have a relaxing and memorable time together.

Places to check out: Puerto Del Sol (Bolinao, Pangasinan), Talipanan Beach (Puerto Galera, Batangas), Club Serena (Lapu-Lapu City), Aguirangan Island (Camarines Sur)

Guys, pick your poison wisely. Girls always remember what they got for Christmas.

There has been an on-going discussion at the PGG Forums about speed dating in the Philippines. What is it anyway? Are you willing to join one given the chance?

Image credit: Voux | Creative Commons

What is speed dating?

For those who are not familiar about speed dating – well it’s an event that is organized where single men and women meet to find new acquaintances or potential mate.

Each man and woman will have an approximately 3-8 minute conversation with one another after which the organizers will ring a bell prompting everyone to rotate and switch partners. The cycle goes on until everyone has been given a chance to mingle and get to know the rest. To reduce the pressure on women, the organizers will not allow you to exchange contact information with one another. You will just have to list down on a piece of paper the names of the women you like for you to remember.

At the end of the event both male and female participants will submit their lists of the people they would like to know better. If there is a match (say guy Y wants to know girl X better and likewise girl X wants to know guy Y better) then the organizers will send the contact information to the matched participants – and it’s up to them to continue their friendship to the next level in case they realize that they have that “spark” for one another.

Views on Speed Dating

Actually, I was planning to attend a speed dating event early this year. It’s not that I’m looking. It’s because I wanted to experience first hand what speed dating is like so that I could feature my experience here in Pinoy Guy Guide. However, since the slots were limited, I wasn’t able to attend the said event. But anyway, I would like to share my few thoughts on speed dating – the good and the bad.

The Good

1. Everyone’s business is to find a match

Unlike in bars or in real-life scenario where you are in a guessing game wondering if the hottie you met is single or not, in speed dating you are certain that everyone is most-likely single and that the very reason you are all gathered in the first place is for you to find a match. So there’s no more reason for you to guess who is single or not.

2. You get to know more people

While it’s not guaranteed that someone will pick you as a potential date, at least you will know more people and you will have a chance to practice your skills towards the opposite sex. This is the best time for you to use your pick-up lines and see which one is most effective to different types of women.

3. It’s a stress reliever

Since most people who attend these events are by nature busy people, it’s a good way to release one’s stress by conversing with other people and at the same time relax and enjoy the event.

The Bad

1. It could be a bad impression on some women

I used to have a female officemate who said that it is a total turn-off for her to see a guy in speed dating events. When I asked her why, she told me that it appears to her that guys who attend speed dates look as if they are a “chickboy” who are always single and ready to mingle with new women.

2. It may appear as if you are desperate

Contrary to #1, some people think that men or even women who attend these events are desperate, hopeless-romantics who couldn’t find a mate. Though to be honest, I certainly disagree with that.

3. It is a risky business which may lead to disappointment

People who attend speed dating events are total strangers to you. So even if you are a guy, you’ve got to be careful because you are not sure about the personal background of the women you will meet in the event (they may be uh, well, psychos weird or stalkers? I hope not). Also you are never sure if you will be successfully matched and it could lead to disappointment – especially when you have already paid the registration fee :p

Where is it organized in the Philippines?

Unlike in the Western parts of the world, speed dating isn’t that popular in the Philippines. The last time I’ve heard of such an event was the one conducted early this year by SixDegrees and also by RX 93.1 Monster Radio if I’m not mistaken.

So how about you? What do you think about speed dating? Do you know any venues where one is being organized?
