The 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa has been on for almost a month now and in a few days time, the entire world will witness the final game which will determine which country is the new champion of the most popular sport in the world.

But sometimes, I couldn’t help it but ask myself why isn’t the Philippines a football nation?

I just can’t believe how we are all missing a lot in such a wonderful sport which takes the world by storm every 4 years. If you are not familiar with it or haven’t watched any football before, take a look at the short video below. It’s one of the best matches in this year’s games. Exhilarating!

Now just a little background. I have extreme love for football. This is because I grew up in Kenya (yes, that’s in Africa) where football is the main sport and basketball is not that popular. When I returned to the Philippines when I was 10, I was surprised to find out that it is the reverse here. Basketball is the primary sport and football is virtually unknown. In most Philippine schools, there aren’t even football fields and the sport is not even included in the PE Curriculum. Deym!

The World Cup Trophy

I do think that the Philippines really needs to catch up in football and in other athletic games. Even nearby Asian countries are doing well in the sport. Just take a look at South Korea and Japan – they are competing in the World Cup and they even co-hosted the games in 2002.

I believe that we Filipinos will do well in football because unlike basketball, you don’t need to be a 6 footer to be good in it. I hope the time will come when our nation will also learn to be fond of football. And if it isn’t too much to dream, I hope to see the Philippine national football team at the FIFA World Cup someday!

I bet that when you see sandals or footwear which look like the one on the left (that is, with holes), you will surely say: “Those are Crocs…”.

The clog with holes from Crocs is what made them famous. It has been there for quite sometime and it has become something like a “trademark” to them. I must admit that they look good and unique but as time passes by, I noticed that some people have outgrown that clog design which nowadays looks better on kids than on most adults.

But the good news is that for stylish people like most of us, Crocs has released a new collection of comfortable footwear called the ABF (Almost Barefoot) collection. I was fortunate enough to be invited by Crocs to be one of the guests at the ABF launching event which was held last week at Enchanted Kingdom Biki Water World. I will talk more about the event later, but for now, take a peek at the photo gallery below for the latest from Crocs. You might want to get yourself a pair!

My personal favorites would be the black one from Almost Barefoot (Men’s) and the black/yellow flip-flop just right above this text from the SS10 collection. They are the BESTEST!

And about the launching event? Well it was a blast! I went there with a very good friend of mine and we had a great time. There was a Crocs fashion show, an exhibit of the latest ABF footwear collection, a raffle, buffet, photo booth, games and free access to EK Biki Water World facilities. Oh did I mention that the Velasco Brothers, a finalist from Pilipinas Got Talent, was also at the Crocs event? Yeah, you read that right! They performed their acrobatic dance moves right in front of us and it was superb. Everyone’s jaw dropped during their performance and we found ourselves clapping to a standing ovation in pure awe! If you are still clueless of what I’m talking about, watch their video here.

And about the photo booth, this is what you call vain moments. But I just had to crop my friend off for her own privacy.

Did you know that back in college I was supposed to take up Political Science? But I ended up taking Computer Science (I know, it still has the word “Science”) since I felt that my passion is in technology. But during the election season like this, I cannot help but unleash the “Political Science” in me.

Now that the polls is just a week away, do you know who to vote? I’m going a bit off-topic today from the usual men’s fashion posts and will share my own guidelines in choosing the best people to put in our ballots. Remember that most of us guys are interested in power so choosing the next leaders to put in power is very important for our country because even if we are just one person, we are still ONE person and we can do something just by casting our votes. You may not agree with everything that I will say but this will serve as a guide for you in case you are still undecided just as I was that is why I made this up.

In my opinion here are some characteristics of a good president or an ideal leader (this also applies in choosing your vice president, senators and maybe even your local officials). Feel free to add to the list.

1. Has proven track record of accomplishments
When regular people like us apply for a job, employers will look at our curriculum vitae and see if we have relevant working experience or background to find out if we are even worth to be called for a job interview.

Same is true with the people we are voting for. Remember that being a president or leader is also a job. But this time it is us who will act as employers and we need to find out if the person we are voting for is fit to become president or leader of our nation. Does he have enough experience? What has he done so far? We should be diligent enough to find out the personal background of each candidate.

2. Is honest
I am tired of hearing of vote-buying and all those cheating. We need honest leaders.

3. Is not corrupt
Need I say more? This time, we need to spare our beloved country from the humiliation that we are facing globally regarding corrupt leaders.

4. Can represent our country to the world
For me, I think it is very important that a president or leader can represent our nation to other world leaders. We need a leader who knows how to converse intelligently and can close deals with foreign investors. We need a leader who can carry himself well and can stand up like he is implicitly saying “I am Filipino and proud” when facing the likes of Barack Obama and Ban-Ki-Moon (Secretary General of the United Nations). We need someone who can uplift the Filipino image to other countries.

5. Cannot be manipulated
No matter how honest a president or leader is, it will all go to waste when he can easily be manipulated and influenced by people close to him. Vote for someone who can stand up for his own decisions.

6. Has a high sense of morality
Imagine if our country allows abortion and polygamy. Our society will definitely be chaotic.

7. Believes in the Divine
Related to #6, if a leader believes in the Divine, morality will follow. A president should learn to acknowledge that his powers are God-given through the power of the ballot. He needs to be aware that he is not invincible and that there is a greater power up there.

8. Has genuine passion to serve
The president, vice-president, senators, mayors and all other officials are there to serve – not in words, but in action. Leaders are there to uplift the condition of the people and to do what is best for their fellow countrymen. Choose a leader who has been serving already before he has even begun his political career.

9. A strong leader with a well-defined platform of government
Ever heard of the Banana Republic? Not the clothing brand since I’m not talking about fashion now. Banana Republic is a term used to describe a politically unstable country. And I’m sure you do not want Philippines to be coined as a Banana Republic where leaders are weaklings who cannot bring peace to the country.

For me, I want a strong leader who can bring everlasting peace to our nation especially to our brothers in Mindanao. I want a leader who can unite our country as one. I want a leader who has a well-defined platform of government that can sail our country smoothly through his 6 years of leadership. I want a leader who, in 2016, will make the people rally behind him saying “Re-elect Mr. President” even if it is already the end of his term because people really love him and he has proven to be one of the best presidents the Philippines has ever had.

10. Has a strong desire to make the Philippines a better nation
It’s true that many nations have already surpassed the Philippines. Many Asian nations have already prospered and left us behind but I’m not losing hope that the Philippines can catch up.

I want a leader who has a strong desire to improve our nation especially in terms of education, infrastructure, poverty, employment, military, tourism, business, economy, science, technology, health care and even sports (heck, I would love to see Philippines to get a gold in the next Olympics and even join the FIFA World Cup).

. . . . . . .

After saying all that I’m looking for in a leader, I know what you must have in mind. Who will I vote for? Well I haven’t completed my list yet, but for president, I am going for Manny Villar. And no, this is not a political ad of his but this is my honest choice. I know that some have negative things to say about him (some maybe true, some maybe not) and as a matter of fact, he wasn’t even my choice last year when the election season was just about to start. But as May 10 comes closer each day, it becomes clearer to me that Manny Villar is the best choice among all the candidates for president that we have right now.

Let’s face it – nobody is perfect. I know that he doesn’t have all the 10 characteristics of a good president or leader that I listed above. But compared to the others, he has most of them.

But what if my candidate of choice doesn’t win? Well, it is okay for me. I need to respect who the majority of my fellow countrymen voted for. After all, Vox Populi, Vox Dei (A Latin maxim associated with democracy which means “The voice of the people is the voice of God”). I will support whoever wins for president, after all, he is the elected president and we need to support his efforts for our country to move forward. That is what democracy is after all.

Hey guys, as I mentioned before I’ll be serving you news and updates on products and some of the events that you may want to join. For this time around, we have Merrell Adventure Run and PLDT Watchpad Crew Search.

Merrell Adventure Run
Speaking of runs and fun runs, the folks from Merrell (the shoe brand featured here) are currently inviting people to join their adventure run this summer to be held at Wawa Dam, Montalban on April 17, 2010. If you are tired with cityscapes and feel bored joining fun runs at The Fort, then this one is a new and refreshing one. Check out the invitation below on how to join. (Click image to zoom)

And make sure to check out their photos in their Multiply site over here where they took shots of the venue. I love it. Breathtaking! Here are some of the pictures.

I know that the guys at the PGG Forums love joining fun runs so I guess this is good news for you guys.

PLDT Watchpad Crew Search

The guys from PLDT just know where the stylish guys are. They’re nowhere else but here on Pinoy Guy Guide. So they are inviting stylish guys here ages 16-20 to join the online search for PLDT MyDSL Watchpad Crew.

So what do you need to do? Logon to their website here and read the details on how to audition. If you win, you will be joining Rhian Ramos and the rest of the crew in their PLDT MyDSL campaigns plus you get BIG prizes.

So, which events mentioned will you be joining? I’m curious

Last Friday, I was invited to the launching of a new UK-based footwear brand named Cushe (pronounced as cushy). They seem to be a promising brand and it’s good that they arrived just in time for summer.

Their product launching was held in Trinoma and it featured bands, graffiti artists and so much more. I was there and I had a glimpse of the event as well as their product line.

Bands at the Cushe launch

Cushe’s product line includes outstanding shoes and sandals. Check out a few of them below:

Perhaps Cushe’s top of the line product which is currently available is their Manuka Fearless Sandals. They come in different colors. The one I have below is the Neon Carbon color variant which is a sure stand out. It feels comfortable to wear and it makes you feel like you’re feet is on a cradle. Just check out the design plus the molded outsoles on the edge.

And just in case you were wondering, the pair comes with a free hanger (the orange thing on the right). That hanger is actually a boomerang too. You can play with it when you are on the beach or resort with your family and friends this summer.

Check out more photos of their shoes and sandals below.Click the images to zoom.

I’m saying sorry in advance cos this won’t always go to plan
Though we don’t mean to take our love for granted
It’s in our nature to forget what matters
How when the going is getting tough
And we’re all about giving up
Things that we never thought we’d gonna say, gonna say them
Things that we never thought we’d play, gonna play them
It ain’t perfect, but it’s worth it
And it’s always getting better
It’s gonna take some time to get it right

Cause I’m still learning the art of love
I’m still trying to not mess up
So whenever I stumble let me know
You need to spell it out
You need to spell it out
You need to spell it out
You need to spell it out for me
Cause I’m still trying to learn the art of love

If I forget to get the door
Remind you that you’re beautiful
I know my detail requires more attention
If I ever hurt you it’s not my intention
Cause we’re gonna make our mistakes
Find out how much your heart can take
But I know that you got my back
And baby I got yours

Cause I’m still learning the art of love
I’m still trying to not mess up
So whenever I stumble let me know
You need to spell it out
You need to spell it out
You need to spell it out
You need to spell it out for me
Cause I’m still trying to learn the art of love

Sometimes I’m gonna miss
I’m still learning how to give
I’m not giving up
I’m still learning how to love
Learning how to love…
Learning how to love

Cause I’m still learning the art of love
I’m still trying to not mess up
So whenever I stumble let me know
You need to spell it out
You need to spell it out
You need to spell it out
You need to spell it out for me
Cause I’m still trying to learn the art of love
(The art of love)

Still learning (art of love)
Still learning (art of love)
Still learning (art of love)
Still trying to learn the art of love
Still learning, I’m still learning (art of love)
Still learning (art of love)
I’m gonna get it sometimes, cause I’m still learning
Still learning (art of love)
Still learning (art of love)
Still learning (art of love)
The art art of love

Dear Toyota,

Dear Toyota,

Today I stumbled upon your new car while I was strolling on my way home. It’s the new Toyota Prius.

I must admit that I do not always find your Toyota cars to be that stunning. Yes, your cars are very reliable – that’s given. But to have me and other people look, feel and touch the Toyota Prius over and over again was really something.

After doing a bit of research, I found out that the Prius is a full-hybrid car relying on a specially-made engine to burn fuel very efficiently. I would like to take it for a test drive.

I also searched for more photos of your Prius because I cannot get over it. Here are some that I found for my readers:

Back in October, I talked about the advantages and disadvantages of speed dating. In this post, PGG contributor Tim, will share his own experience on speed dating. Read on to find out how it was like.

We all know that in most Western countries the art of Speed Dating is no longer new in the ear since it is already a regular, or more of a usual event that happens once in a while. In the Philippine setting meanwhile, not every person is aware of what Speed Dating is all about, and how it really works.

I had my first taste of Speed Dating pre-Valentines of 2009 in an affair conducted by ICE productions called, “Single Hearts”. It was my first, and I had zero idea on how the whole process actually works. For all I know is that everyone will sit and will have the chance to do the talking with different girls for a short period of time, and after which either the male or the female will make their move to the next seat facing another potential date.

Try to recall your first day in college where orientations for block sections are usually conducted in order to get to know your new peers well. The same thing applies in Speed Dating. First things first, registration is needed in order to join the event. Second, you have to send your name, contact number and picture –usually via e-mail – , and not to mention, you have to be SINGLE (to be fair) in order to qualify for the game. Notification follows after which.

On the actual event, checking of names at the registration booth happens first, then name tags would be distributed after. These name tags are required to be worn by each individual during the entire process of the game.

Moving on inside the venue, speed daters are usually gathered where seats are already aligned and arranged. Male speed daters must be seated face-to-face with female speed daters. During the idle time of waiting for the other speed daters, don’t be surprised if some speed daters who are already in the venue would do the initiation to introduce themselves. You could do the same and eventually notice that some speed daters go to the event alone. So don’t be intimidated whenever you feel like approaching the cute girl seated across you.

In the event when everyone is already present and the list is in complete attendance, the host will most likely conduct several parlor games for all speed daters. The purpose of which is to build teamwork, and moreover to break the ice and barricades hindering each individual. Games usually allow each speed dater the chance to chat with their fellow teammates, as if you are just chatting with an acquaintance from high school while playing.

After the parlor games, the host will then start the whole essence of speed dating. Just imagine the setting of a tea party where seats are all facing each other. In my case, the females are the ones who must transfer to the next seat, every after the host says so. So usually a few minutes are given for each couple to get to know each other, and what amazes me the most is how you get to know the character, persona and little background of several people in a short span of time. I felt like I was a talking machine that needs to talk non-stop because once the actual speed dating starts, there will be no water breaks.

My mouth and butt literally hurt badly after. But the thought that you get to indulge yourself in something crazy and spontaneous like this (picture out talking to like 50 girls non-stop and getting to know the details and brief descriptions and backgrounds of each after the other) blew all the pain off. In formal speed dating, the host usually gives away a card to each speed dater for them to list down the girls that they find attractive. The host will usually conduct a compatibility test if who matches whom, and after which they give away the number of your match. This means to say, it must be a win-win situation where both parties agree that both of them are a possible match.

In my speed dating experience though, after the chitchat, a paper is attached at the back of each speed dater and any random girls can write at my back without me knowing which of the numerous messages written belongs to whom. After the writing segment, you will get the chance to learn the views, perspectives, comments, and opinions of the girls towards your personality, performance and being. In my case, I received positive feedback.

The event usually wraps up with awards for the best dressers, good-looking couple, potential couples and the likes. Sponsored products are given away after which, and if you are gutsy enough, you could start exchanging digits to other speed daters.

At the end of the day though, whether you still label yourself as single or not, speed dating does not really guarantee relationships, yet you will learn that it is a very safe and healthy environment to meet potential partners, and even lovers.

For our PGG readers, have you ever joined speed dating? How was it like?

During our lunchbreak yesterday, we had funny conversations with my office friends. We were actually talking about Father’s Day – an annual event which has caused much confusion to all of us and surprisingly, even to members of the PGG Forums. I’ve always thought that Father’s day is on the second Sunday of June but it’s not. It’s on the third Sunday of June which is tomorrow.

So much for the intro. Anyway for the past years, I have always observed that sometimes dads are considered less important than moms. I don’t know if you observed that too, but it’s always the case that dads are perceived as a parent who is not emotionally expressive and who doesn’t need much attention as moms do. But in my opinion both parents should be equally given much importance and attention. So tomorrow, make sure to make Father’s day a special day for your dad. I know that someday we will also become fathers too.

Then today as I was browsing through Father’s day articles I stumbled upon International Men’s Day and I could hardly believe that such an event exists because no one seems to celebrate it here in the Philippines. And since Pinoy Guy Guide is a men’s blog, I thought that it would be nice to share with you that International Men’s day falls every year on November 19th. Hmmm, quite far but at least we now know. So do you think that as guys, we are so underrated? What do you think?
