Mind you that the cartoon prints are from Larry Alcala, a renowned Filipino Cartoonist. At first, it might seem bizarre to see comic sketches on shirts, shorts, vests and even long-sleeves but if you come to think of it – isn’t it cool to wear one of these? After all, fashion is just a freedom of expression. The prints actually make you feel and look younger too.

Now, here are more fresh photos of Solo’s men’s cartoonist collection. Click on the images to zoom.

I somehow believe that these cartoon prints might be the next “in” thing to hit Philippine men’s clothing. In line with this hot collection, Solo even informed me that they are currently conducting an online model search. So if you have that model in you, you can easily join the contest by logging on to their online model search website here to find out the details.

Just want to share my latest toy. Meet the Sennheiser HD-408 headphones. Literally a dream come true. For me.

I seriously had first, second, third and even N thoughts whether to buy this baby or not. Dude, more than 2,000 Pesos just for a pair of headphones? You might think I have gone nutts but when you hear the sound quality of this high-end headphones, I bet you will surely have forgotten the price. It’s all worth it and highly recommended if you are an audiophile like me who breathes music.

I feel like I’m a DJ when I’m using it. I remember when I played Jay Sean’s Down using this headphones. The bass and vibration gave me the feeling like I was in some dance club partying. It has a superb crisp sound and it’s very comfortable and stylish to wear. When I brought this to the office, I found my colleagues begging to borrow it. Everyone else wants one too. I even recommended this to my closest friends (who are audiophiles like me by the way) and they bought one for themselves as well. If you are planning to invest in a good pair of headphones, I suggest you try this one.

Speaking of Jay Sean’s Down, I just remembered that he will be here in Manila for a concert on September 3. If you’re a fan like me, let’s go and watch!

Is there such a term? Yes, there is, and I just found it out while searching for a word on Merriam-Webster while composing an email to my colleagues. Can you guess what word refers to a person who is anti-metrosexual?

It’s called Retrosexual. And it is the top 1 user-submitted word on Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary. So how does the famous dictionary define it? Read on.

RETROSEXUAL

Definition: a man who adopts a traditional masculine style in dress and manners

Example:

“Think of him as the anti-metrosexual, the opposite of that guy who emerged in the 1990s in all his pedicured, moussed-up, skinny-jeans glory. That man-boy was searching for his inner girl, it was argued. The retrosexual, however, wants to put the man back into manhood.” — Lini S. Kadaba, Philadelphia Inquirer, Apr. 7, 2010

Submitted by: West4th, NY

Editor’s Note:

Retrosexual is a word that has been used in two very different ways.

It sometimes describes an old-fashioned “manly man” – e.g. a beer and football-loving guy who cares little for his appearance.

But it has also been used, as in the example above, to describe someone who self-consciously adopts traditional masculine styles – e.g. old-fashioned manners and clothes typical of the early 1960s (think Mad Men).

Well it seems to me that maybe this is a men’s fashion revolution – and I guess men’s style and fashion of the past are coming back. Remember the Freemasons and Illustrados of the 1800′s? The way they dress with that formal suit look, decent tie, walking staff and a smoking pipe?

How about the cowboys in Marlboro’s past advertisements?

I think that society is bringing back that classic and gentleman look in men’s style and clothing and perhaps that is the very reason why we are seeing Fedora hats recently.

Maybe retrosexual is just another fashion trend to some, but I guess the question is: Is there really a genuine retrosexual man who honestly doesn’t give a damn about looks, about hairstyle, about clothes and all that stuff?

If you’re a sports enthusiast and happen to go over Dasmariñas through Aguinaldo Highway in Cavite, you may want to stop by Dasca Sports Outlet.

Once you’re there, the first thing that will strike you is the sign of their 30% markdown on all items. What’s good is it’s not just for a limited time but offered all year-round.

I’ve been wanting to see the sports boutique after I heard about it from a colleague last March. After passing by to this particular store several times, I finally had the chance to pay visit and roam inside.

Be ready with their racks of Nike shoes. Many choices on display including Air Jordan shoes and old stocks from the warehouse of Nike Philippines all in good condition. Price ranges from 700 to 4,000 Pesos. Not bad for an original Nike item. You better start checking it out before it becomes out of stock (they also have a branch in Bicutan by the name MJ46 Center). Most shoes are already in last pair.

I was tempted to buy one even if I’m not a big basketball fan. I’ve been looking for something to replace my old rubber shoes. Disappointing though because I have small feet. They only have sizes 9 to 12.

Wait, there’s more. Dasca Sports Outlet also cater jerseys, bags, jackets, Nike Golf polo shirts, visors, Pacman/Pride tees, slip-ons and other sports gears. They got stuff for women too. Take a look at the gallery below and click each photo to zoom.

Aside from Nike, they promote their outlet as a retailer of Adidas and Asics brands. However, I noticed very few Adidas products around the area.

In case you don’t find an item you want, try to go back every after two or three weeks. They’ll fill the store with new stocks by that time. The last time I went there, new shoes were already on display.

I don’t get easily persuaded with discounts since I’m still after the comfort, quality and style. But I spotted a nice green Mojo flip-flops and bought a pair as an advance birthday gift for myself.

If you’re a sports enthusiast and happen to go over Dasmarinas thru
Aguinaldo Highway in Cavite, you may want to stop by Dasca Sports
Outlet.

Once you’re there, the first thing that will strike you is the sign of
their 30% markdown on all items. What good is it’s not just for a
limited time but offered all year-round.

I’ve been wanting to see the sports boutique after I heard about it
from a colleague last March. After passing by to this particular store
several times, I finally had the chance to pay visit and roam inside.

Be ready with their racks of Nike shoes. Many choices on display
including Air Jordan shoes and old stocks from the warehouse of Nike
Philippines all in good condition. Price ranges from 700 to 4,000. Not
bad for an original Nike item. You better start checking it out before
it becomes out of stock (they also have a branch in Bicutan by the
name MJ46 Center). Most shoes are already in last pair.

I was tempted to buy one even if I’m not a big basketball fan. I’ve
been looking for something to replace my old rubber shoes.
Disappointing though because I have small feet. They only have sizes 9
to 12.

Wait, there’s more. Dasca Sports Outlet also cater jerseys, bags,
jackets, Nike Golf polo shirts, visors, Pacman/Pride tees, slip ons
and other Sports gears. They got stuff for women too.

Aside from Nike, they promote their outlet as a retailer of Adidas and
Asics brands. However, I noticed very few Adidas product around the
area.

In case you don’t find an item you want, try to go back every after

Lacoste did it again. They were able to convince me once again to buy their perfume. This time, I bought their newest fragrance – Lacoste Essential Sport.

Lacoste Essential Sport is a variant of Lacoste Essential which I also mentioned in PGG’s Four Picks on Men’s Scents back in 2009. I now have both fragrances and they both smell great. I initially thought that the two variants would smell almost the same but I was wrong. They smell differently. I realized that Lacoste Essential Sport has a stronger masculine scent than the original Lacoste Essential which has a “citrusy” smell. If you ask me which I like better, I won’t be able to decide because I love them both. But for now, I think I’m liking the “Sport” variant more due to the more manly scent that women like.

Lacoste Essential Sport was officially released last March 2010. According to the salesman of SM Department Store, this fragrance came out locally less than a month ago and SM was one of the first to carry the brand.

The perfume is available in 75 mL and 125 mL. I bought the bigger 125 mL because Lacoste is currently giving away a free messenger bag with every purchase of the big bottle.

Aside from the bag, I also received a free pocket-size perfume applicator which I can refill and take to a party so that it wouldn’t be such a hassle carrying the big bottle around. I guess I got myself a pretty good deal if you ask me.

One last thing. In case you are still wondering – yes, the smell of Lacoste Essential Sport is worth it!

Did you know that back in college I was supposed to take up Political Science? But I ended up taking Computer Science (I know, it still has the word “Science”) since I felt that my passion is in technology. But during the election season like this, I cannot help but unleash the “Political Science” in me.

Now that the polls is just a week away, do you know who to vote? I’m going a bit off-topic today from the usual men’s fashion posts and will share my own guidelines in choosing the best people to put in our ballots. Remember that most of us guys are interested in power so choosing the next leaders to put in power is very important for our country because even if we are just one person, we are still ONE person and we can do something just by casting our votes. You may not agree with everything that I will say but this will serve as a guide for you in case you are still undecided just as I was that is why I made this up.

In my opinion here are some characteristics of a good president or an ideal leader (this also applies in choosing your vice president, senators and maybe even your local officials). Feel free to add to the list.

1. Has proven track record of accomplishments
When regular people like us apply for a job, employers will look at our curriculum vitae and see if we have relevant working experience or background to find out if we are even worth to be called for a job interview.

Same is true with the people we are voting for. Remember that being a president or leader is also a job. But this time it is us who will act as employers and we need to find out if the person we are voting for is fit to become president or leader of our nation. Does he have enough experience? What has he done so far? We should be diligent enough to find out the personal background of each candidate.

2. Is honest
I am tired of hearing of vote-buying and all those cheating. We need honest leaders.

3. Is not corrupt
Need I say more? This time, we need to spare our beloved country from the humiliation that we are facing globally regarding corrupt leaders.

4. Can represent our country to the world
For me, I think it is very important that a president or leader can represent our nation to other world leaders. We need a leader who knows how to converse intelligently and can close deals with foreign investors. We need a leader who can carry himself well and can stand up like he is implicitly saying “I am Filipino and proud” when facing the likes of Barack Obama and Ban-Ki-Moon (Secretary General of the United Nations). We need someone who can uplift the Filipino image to other countries.

5. Cannot be manipulated
No matter how honest a president or leader is, it will all go to waste when he can easily be manipulated and influenced by people close to him. Vote for someone who can stand up for his own decisions.

6. Has a high sense of morality
Imagine if our country allows abortion and polygamy. Our society will definitely be chaotic.

7. Believes in the Divine
Related to #6, if a leader believes in the Divine, morality will follow. A president should learn to acknowledge that his powers are God-given through the power of the ballot. He needs to be aware that he is not invincible and that there is a greater power up there.

8. Has genuine passion to serve
The president, vice-president, senators, mayors and all other officials are there to serve – not in words, but in action. Leaders are there to uplift the condition of the people and to do what is best for their fellow countrymen. Choose a leader who has been serving already before he has even begun his political career.

9. A strong leader with a well-defined platform of government
Ever heard of the Banana Republic? Not the clothing brand since I’m not talking about fashion now. Banana Republic is a term used to describe a politically unstable country. And I’m sure you do not want Philippines to be coined as a Banana Republic where leaders are weaklings who cannot bring peace to the country.

For me, I want a strong leader who can bring everlasting peace to our nation especially to our brothers in Mindanao. I want a leader who can unite our country as one. I want a leader who has a well-defined platform of government that can sail our country smoothly through his 6 years of leadership. I want a leader who, in 2016, will make the people rally behind him saying “Re-elect Mr. President” even if it is already the end of his term because people really love him and he has proven to be one of the best presidents the Philippines has ever had.

10. Has a strong desire to make the Philippines a better nation
It’s true that many nations have already surpassed the Philippines. Many Asian nations have already prospered and left us behind but I’m not losing hope that the Philippines can catch up.

I want a leader who has a strong desire to improve our nation especially in terms of education, infrastructure, poverty, employment, military, tourism, business, economy, science, technology, health care and even sports (heck, I would love to see Philippines to get a gold in the next Olympics and even join the FIFA World Cup).

. . . . . . .

After saying all that I’m looking for in a leader, I know what you must have in mind. Who will I vote for? Well I haven’t completed my list yet, but for president, I am going for Manny Villar. And no, this is not a political ad of his but this is my honest choice. I know that some have negative things to say about him (some maybe true, some maybe not) and as a matter of fact, he wasn’t even my choice last year when the election season was just about to start. But as May 10 comes closer each day, it becomes clearer to me that Manny Villar is the best choice among all the candidates for president that we have right now.

Let’s face it – nobody is perfect. I know that he doesn’t have all the 10 characteristics of a good president or leader that I listed above. But compared to the others, he has most of them.

But what if my candidate of choice doesn’t win? Well, it is okay for me. I need to respect who the majority of my fellow countrymen voted for. After all, Vox Populi, Vox Dei (A Latin maxim associated with democracy which means “The voice of the people is the voice of God”). I will support whoever wins for president, after all, he is the elected president and we need to support his efforts for our country to move forward. That is what democracy is after all.

I live quite far from where I work so lately I’ve been considering to get my own apartment nearer to my workplace so that I could have plenty more time to rest, not to mention lessen my daily exhaustion from travel and also to be able to economize on expenses.

So there, just a couple of weeks ago, it was like heaven-sent that I found a brand new apartment somewhere in Quezon City. It is a four-storey building that has several bachelor pad units for rent which are so new that you could still smell the fresh paint. The units really look nice and cozy and I prefer this to a condo because I don’t want to live in a building which looks and feels so much like an office, if you know what I’m saying.

Now it has been two weeks since my reservation and I’m still unsure whether to get it or not. I have been seriously thinking about it over and over, calculating my expenses here and there and seeing if it would really be beneficial for me. You see, I do not plan to live there 24/7. I will still go home to our house over the weekends.

The thing that is causing me dilemma are the expenses. Talking about the consequence of being independent right? After doing much analysis on the budget I found out that living in a bachelor pad will even cost me more even if it is nearer to my workplace. And the culprit for having more expenses? FOOD! I just couldn’t believe it! Adding the fact that I do not know how to cook at all makes it worse. I guess this is every guy’s problem when living independently.

But even if it is more expensive, I’m also thinking about the advantages it could do for me like more time to rest, more time for gym, more time to blog and attend events, more time to hangout with peers and best of all, more time and more girls to date. haha. Can you help me decide?

Disclaimer: The photo shown in this post is not the actual bachelor pad, it is how I envision it to look like in case I decide to take it.

Last Friday, I was invited to the launching of a new UK-based footwear brand named Cushe (pronounced as cushy). They seem to be a promising brand and it’s good that they arrived just in time for summer.

Their product launching was held in Trinoma and it featured bands, graffiti artists and so much more. I was there and I had a glimpse of the event as well as their product line.

Bands at the Cushe launch

Cushe’s product line includes outstanding shoes and sandals. Check out a few of them below:

Perhaps Cushe’s top of the line product which is currently available is their Manuka Fearless Sandals. They come in different colors. The one I have below is the Neon Carbon color variant which is a sure stand out. It feels comfortable to wear and it makes you feel like you’re feet is on a cradle. Just check out the design plus the molded outsoles on the edge.

And just in case you were wondering, the pair comes with a free hanger (the orange thing on the right). That hanger is actually a boomerang too. You can play with it when you are on the beach or resort with your family and friends this summer.

A couple of months ago, I received an email from a PGG reader regarding men’s hairstyles. It took me quite some time to respond since I needed to find out more about it. Here was his question.

“Hi. Are mohawk and emo hairstyles still “in” nowadays? What other hairstyles are popular? Thanks.”

My answer to that would be yes. I know that the emo haircut was already around a few years ago as evident in my post here but yes, it is still “in” and guess what? There is a variation of it which is currently being made popular again by salons for men here in the Philippines.

The idea is you will get a short haircut (probably a faux-hawk) and add short stripes to either or both sides of your head (called racing stripes or dash stripes) and you will end up having lines like these:

Image credit: No source. Photo found in a message board

And since summer is here in just a few more days, short haircuts would be fantastic! I’m planning to get this haircut but I have to double check to make sure that I’m not violating any of my company’s policies.
