My answer to that would be yes. I know that the emo haircut was already around a few years ago as evident in my post here but yes, it is still “in” and guess what? There is a variation of it which is currently being made popular again by salons for men here in the Philippines.

The idea is you will get a short haircut (probably a faux-hawk) and add short stripes to either or both sides of your head (called racing stripes or dash stripes) and you will end up having lines like these:

And since summer is here in just a few more days, short haircuts would be fantastic! I’m planning to get this haircut but I have to double check to make sure that I’m not violating any of my company’s policies.

Thanks Ash for your email and for the compliment. As you wish, here is my response to you. I have provided here some tips to help you and the other big guys in choosing comfortable and stylish clothes.

1. Don’t buy too loose or too fit.

When chubby guys buy clothes, they have a tendency to buy either clothes which are too fit or too loose to prove that they are not too big. However, I think this is a wrong move in choosing clothes.

If you happen to be a chubby guy, go for clothes which are one size bigger than your actual size BUT choose a slim fit version.

Let’s say you go shopping for a shirt. You know that you are a size XL. So what you need to do is to find nice clothes on size XXL which are SLIM FIT. Once again read: SLIM FIT! So what will happen is that you will end up buying clothes which are just about right for your size and since it is slim fit, it will make you look slimmer.


2. Vertical Patterns

If you have attended Psychology 101 you should remember a topic their called visual illusions. During my freshman year in college, I clearly remember my Psych professor teaching us how to wear good clothes which will make short guys appear taller, fat guys appear slimmer, skinny guys appear bigger and so on and so forth.

I will not go over all of them. But what I remember is that, if you are a chubby guy, you should avoid horizontal prints on clothes because it only will make you look bigger and yes, fatter. Instead, what you should do is to wear vertical prints because the length of the prints will produce an illusion that you are taller and slimmer than you actually are. Choose a variety of vertical prints and not just plain stripes. I’m sure you wouldn’t want to find your wardrobe full of vertically-striped clothes would you?


3. Buy from shops like…

…Jag, Lee, Penshoppe, Bench, Human, RRJ, Tribal etc. They have tons of stylish and inexpensive clothes available up to XL (and in some cases even XXL). I also recommend that you go shopping for clothes in department stores rather than stand-alone shops for variety and for size availability. And if you can find American and foreign brands like TopMan, Van Heusen, Izod and Von Dutch – it would be much better because American sizes are naturally bigger.

You mentioned in your email some brands that you like. However, People are People, Folded & Hung, Refill, Mint, Oxygen and other similar brands rarely have BIG sizes. Yes, their clothes are very modern and chic but their target market is for slim guys. So I suggest you go for the previous ones I have mentioned.


4. Try MaxWear at SM Department Store

If you have some time, try to drop by SM Department Store one of these days. They have a section there called MaxWear and they have a wide variety of inexpensive clothes for big men.  Check out a few photos below:

They have plenty of clothes for both casual and formal wear and most of the designs are the latest ones which you will also see from the other brands.

I actually like our representative to the Miss Universe Pageant – Pamela Bianca Manalo. She’s 22 and is pretty and has a lot of appeal.

Yeah I know that winning that pageant is difficult since it is indeed a combination of talent, looks and luck but I wish that she would win. I don’t know, she’s one of the most good-looking contestants that the Philippines had for Miss Universe. I like her and I think she deserves some spotlight here on PGG. How about you? I bet that the majority of us have seen in the news the on-going economic recession in the US that has resulted into banks and insurance companies collapsing left and right. But in terms of men’s style and fashion, I couldn’t help but ask – is there also a perfume recession going on?

This is what came into my mind when I saw all perfumes on sale this weekend. I happened to pass by Ayala and SM malls to pay my bills and lo and behold, perfumes were on sale at 10%, 30%, and even 50% off!

I felt like I was a kid brought into a candy store when I saw Davidoff’s Cool Water, Hugo Dark Blue and almost all of the other well-known original fragrances selling for buy 1 take 1! So guys, if you are opting to buy yourselves signature perfumes for Christmas, now is the time!

I totally love the concept of the angel and devil drinking Coke – seems like the softdrink company is boosting it’s advertising and sales for the summer. I was really impressed with the advertisement and you’re right, I fell in love with the angel too.

Now if you’re wondering, the title of the beautiful song used in the commercial is “Ang Sarap Dito” by Project 1 – a superband formed by vocalists/members of existing OPM bands. Interesting enough? Of course – take a look at the list of Project 1 members:

Sean Kingston Live at Ayala Malls!
Too much for Coke’s angel and devil. As for other music updates, I guess it’s a bit late to put it here but Sean Kingston fans have a reason to celebrate since he has a live mall tour at Ayala Malls starting April 17, 2008 at Glorietta Activity Center. So if you like “Beautiful Girls”, “Me Love” as well as his remix versions with Fergie and Natasha Bedingfield, then don’t miss the opportunity to watch!

Short Sleeves Wetsuit for Men

I guess the upcoming Olympic Games this year has a strong influence in men’s summerwear because this short-sleeves wetsuit is actually a swimwear for men who are into swimming competitions and water sports such as scuba diving, wind surfing and the likes. They are usually made up of materials which serve as thermal protection for the body. See here for more info.

Currently they are available in Speedo outlets as well as in other sports apparel outlets. However, I think this is not advisable to wear unless you’re into diving.

Cut-off sleeveless shirt

They are easily available anywhere and they are relatively cheap. You could even make your own out of your existing T-shirts by just chopping-off the sleeves. Just make sure to get one which has summer designs since graphic tees are the typical designs these days. Cut-off shirts are comfortable to wear for your summer getaway.

Tank-tops (aka “Sandos”)

Want to show some skin to the ladies? Well tank-tops are the way to go! Just like cut-off shirts, these are very comfortable. There are several choices of tank-tops in department stores which are also good to wear while you’re in the water! That’s right – you can use this for actual swimming too just like the one in the photo. The best thing about tank-tops is that they make a perfect match with boardshorts. Just make sure to buy one which has summer prints on it.

…Or just go shirtless
If you are already in the beach and really want to show more skin then its time to go shirtless. After all, the summer season is all that we’ve been waiting for to show-off the product of diet and work-outs in the past few months!
