I know what you must be thinking. F4 haircut? No, not quite. The F4 haircut is for the guys with very straight hair and it is a haircut which is meant to be long and combed more often. On the contrary, the surfer dude’s hairstyle is the exact opposite – it is usually wavy and is very low maintenance especially if you have naturally curly hair. The less you comb it, the better it looks.

Example of popular Filipino guys who have surfer hair going for them are Billy Crawford and Mateo Guidicelli (did I spell that right?).

So why is the hairstyle called as such? Pretty straightforward. It is the hairstyle that surfers love to have because it is low maintenance but at the same time very stylish. Just a precaution: it does not suit everyone. Some guys can sport the surfer dude’s hairstyle really good whether they are surfing, clubbing and even if they are in the office wearing long sleeves. However, there are some guys who just can’t pull it off and it makes them look untidy. I guess it all depends on the shape of your face and the kind of hair that you have.

… the other thing is to sport your hair so that your bangs flow downward (or sideways) your forehead – seemingly trying to escape your cap – like the way I wore my cap in my photo below.

Simple? It is. After all, if you observe around, this is one of the hottest styles for men of this year’s summer – that baseball cap and bangs look!

Retrosexual is a word that has been used in two very different ways.

It sometimes describes an old-fashioned “manly man” – e.g. a beer and football-loving guy who cares little for his appearance.

But it has also been used, as in the example above, to describe someone who self-consciously adopts traditional masculine styles – e.g. old-fashioned manners and clothes typical of the early 1960s (think Mad Men).

Well it seems to me that maybe this is a men’s fashion revolution – and I guess men’s style and fashion of the past are coming back. Remember the Freemasons and Illustrados of the 1800′s?  The way they dress with that formal suit look, decent tie, walking staff and a smoking pipe?

How about the cowboys in Marlboro’s past advertisements?

I think that society is bringing back that classic and gentleman look in men’s style and clothing and perhaps that is the very reason why we are seeing Fedora hats recently.

Maybe retrosexual is just another fashion trend to some, but I guess the question is: Is there really a genuine retrosexual man who honestly doesn’t give a damn about looks, about hairstyle, about clothes and all that stuff?

“Hi. Are mohawk and emo hairstyles still “in” nowadays? What other hairstyles are popular? Thanks.”

My answer to that would be yes. I know that the emo haircut was already around a few years ago as evident in my post here but yes, it is still “in” and guess what? There is a variation of it which is currently being made popular again by salons for men here in the Philippines.

The idea is you will get a short haircut (probably a faux-hawk) and add short stripes to either or both sides of your head (called racing stripes or dash stripes) and you will end up having lines like these:

And since summer is here in just a few more days, short haircuts would be fantastic! I’m planning to get this haircut but I have to double check to make sure that I’m not violating any of my company’s policies.

It surprised me how good their research and development was. I mean, they are a Filipino brand and if I’m not mistaken, Gatsby (which happens to be the most popular hair wax for men), doesn’t have a colored hair wax yet but this Filipino brand already has. This is something which makes me more proud of being a Filipino.

Out of curiosity, I tried their colored hair wax and it’s nice. It’s temporary and washable. They are available in two colors – red and brown. I guess you should try it if you want a non-permanent hair color or if you just want to see how highlights look on you before going to a salon to get yourself a more permanent or long-lasting one. These colored hair wax are perfect for highlights!

I initially thought that it was a rebranding of Gatsby Wax but I was wrong. It’s a better product than Gatsby Wax – the substance is more dense and it gives you more freedom in hairstyling. The cool thing about it is that in order to style your hair, you will need to split and pinch your hair on the tip to get that snazzy Asian-hair look (I’ve tried it and it works!). What’s more is that you can restyle your hair as many times as you want.

Side-swept bangs on men a.k.a “Boy bangs” is one of the best haircuts of this season. Japanese have it. Koreans sport it. Americans imitate it. Filipinos love it. And best of all chicks dig it.

Unlike the emo haircut with unusually long bangs, “Boy bangs” have shorter bangs sweeping on one side of the forehead, almost reaching one’s eyebrows. Gone were the old tales when the art of waxing was only reserved for the opposite sex for that hair-free baby feeling. In today’s time, even men – yes, as in us guys – are now opting for a hair-free feeling, ahem, down south.

We do not usually discuss such topics to our guy peers whenever we talk about vanity. But did you know that going hair-free down south has its own advantages? In terms of health, it reduces sweat down south especially when you are exposed to the sun therefore, making you feel more comfortable than ever. Also, in terms of aesthetics, no unwanted hair would be seen when you are wearing just your underwear or swimming trunks. You will look clean, neat and soft. Best of all, it will give emphasis down there.

Bikini wax only covers hair above the jewel and those that are in our inner thighs. If you want, you can suggest to have all the hair above completely removed, or leave just a little, or have the treasure trail hair waxed or not. In my case though, I refused having my treasure trail waxed.

My experience of Bikini wax was caused by pure curiosity on how it feels like. For first-timers, the typical “ouch and &@*#@” are inevitable. As a matter of fact, I even suggested a minute break from the therapist for each waxed area. It took me almost an hour for the session, and several breaks in-between in order to restore myself.

Words to describe the results thereof are: clean, smooth, soft, and neat.

Note that bikini wax is different from Brazilian wax. Bikini only covers the hair above and that in our inner thighs, while Brazilian covers all hair beneath down under, including those which we are unaware of.

He has been cutting my hair for the past 8 months and the style was basically the same throughout. I trusted him a lot because all that time I was always satisfied with my hair and I would always give him a tip each time I visit amounting to around 60-80% of the cost of my haircut until today.

So what happened?

About a month ago, I asked him what would be a good hairstyle for men this coming summer. He told me barber’s cut, semikal or anything short will do. But at that time I didn’t want to cut my hair short because I wasn’t really in the mood for the summer – not yet.

Fast forward to today, I told him what I wanted as mentioned above and I was a little surprised that he was quite uncomfortable, even fidgety about the idea. But since I trusted him, I ignored that.

A bit later he seems to have trouble searching where he placed the electric hairclipper but luckily, he was able to find it. When he was already starting to cut my hair on the sides, he asked me: “So why do you want this haircut?”. I just replied: “It’s summer and I wanted to try something new.” But at the back of my mind I was wondering why he even asked me that question where he was in fact the one who was suggesting it just a month ago.

Throughout that haircutting session, I was bothered by his question. I was thinking that maybe he knows that it will not look good on me or probably he’s not good in doing it. I was getting really uncomfortable on my seat thinking that I may not like the outcome of my new haircut so I just expected the worst. But guess what? It came out to be exactly how I wanted it to be! I just realized that probably the reason why he was uneasy with the haircut is because it is not his expertise. It really took him more than 40 minutes to get my hair done while in the past 8 months (with my old hairstyle) he could complete my haircut in 20 minutes or less.

I think the next time that I will try to get this kind of haircut, I will go to a different place. Yeah, he did get it right but I wouldn’t want to risk it again the next time.

So why is it important for guys to get a good haircut? Here are the top 4 reasons:

1. Haircut determines your personality

Your hair is as important as any part of your body. It gives you personality and character. Want to look like an emo? A rockstar? A model? Or perhaps a sportstar? Have your hair done and you’d surely look like the character you most want to be like.

2. Haircut shows your outlook in life

Believe it or not, your hairstyle projects your outlook in life. Too messy a hair and you will look like you’re stressed. Too neat a hair and you will look like an optimistic professional. Too stylish a hair and you’d look younger than your age.

3. Haircut shows your attractiveness

There are some haircuts which look good on others but don’t look good on you and vice versa. This is because the shape of your face will determine whether a certain hairstyle will look good on you or not. So choosing one recommended by the barber or stylist is essential.

4. Haircut can make you a headturner

Related to #3, if your haircut is generally impressive, you will become a headturner as you walk along. I don’t want to sound proud but just this weekend, when I got myself a nice haircut, I noticed a pretty girl at the mall who took a second look at me (and my hair). It was really flattering and it feels good.

As you can see, haircuts are often ignored by many of us (I included). But after having my hair done this weekend, I am happy to say that my perspective on styling my hair has really changed a lot.
