4. Coat + Jeans = Dressed to Kill –  Wearing a coat together with a pair of jeans and shirt is probably one of the biggest men’s fashion trends this year. It’s a style that is a hybrid between formal and casual wear. It turns out that this style clicked with the majority of the guys.

5. Ever tried an electronic cigarette? – I am not a smoker but I once spotted these electronic cigarettes in Greenhills. But I guess the most important question is – are they truly a better alternative to the regular cigarettes?

6. Wear an Azkals shirt to show your support – These shirts have been around throughout the year and I do hope that they are not just a fad. Let’s continue to wear them and to show our support to the Philippine National Football Team. Thank you Azkals for awakening the football interest of the Filipinos!

7. Manila & Pilipinas on Collezione’s Summer Shorts for Men – These Philippine-themed men’s shorts (though expensive) were the coolest thing to wear last summer.

8. Filipino Men: the most Narcissistic in Asia – This is a very interesting news article that I came across. It says that we Filipino guys are too concerned about our looks? If it’s true, I don’t think it’s really that bad. Let’s just not overdo it.

9. Couple Shirts – It has been a trend for couples this year to wear these couple shirts. It can be cheesy for some but I guess it really depends upon you and your girlfriend.

10. Today’s word is LEGS. Spread the word. – Some shirts are just so green, it makes you grin.

11. Dockers Alpha Khaki for the Alpha Males – Dockers pioneered the khaki revolution this year and the rest of the brands followed. These days, khakis are one of the best alternatives to your blue jeans.

12. Five things every guy ought to know when it comes to relationships – I’d probably say that this is one of my best and most favorite write-ups this 2011. It details the lessons (DO’s and DON’Ts) that I have learned in my past relationships hoping that other guys will learn from them too.

13. Wrangler Men’s Bomber Jacket – The name says it all. This jacket with removable sleeves is the BOMB!

14. The Surfer Dude’s Hairstyle – For 2011, the surfer dude’s hairstyle stood out among all other men’s hairstyles. Mind you that they are great for any season, not just summer.

15. AntiFit: A brand to watch out for – A very promising men’s clothing brand. Check them out when you go to department stores.

16. Feiyue Shoes and Sperry Top-siders now in Manila – Two shoe brands with different styles and different origins that have found their way to the Philippines.

17. Nerdy Glasses – If there is one men’s accessory that became an instant hit this 2011, it would be none other than these Nerdy Glasses.

18. The World Is Just Awesome – Check out these statement shirts brought to us by Regatta and Discovery Channel. It seems that this year, intelligent and smart look is in.

19. International Men’s Day and PGG’s Male Role Models 2011 – Last International Men’s Day, PGG picked Pacquiao, Babbage, apl.de.ap and Beckham as four male role models of 2011. Read the write-up to find out why.

22. Abercrombie & Fitch Singapore and their Fierce Men’s Cologne – Just this December I witnessed the grand opening of Abercrombie & Fitch Singapore. I just can’t get enough of Abercrombie’s Fierce Men’s Cologne. It is one of the best men’s fragrances that I have smelled and owned so far aside from Lacoste Essential.

23. Show Your Style Season 2 – How could we ever forget the very successful PGG’s Show Your Style Season 2? Surprisingly, in our country, we don’t celebrate it. Actually, I was clueless about it until I stumbled upon an article in Wikipedia a couple of years back.

The idea of celebrating men’s day is for the promotion of men’s health, gender equality and to highlight positive male role models.

So let’s see. In celebration of this year’s International Men’s Day, Pinoy Guy Guide names Four Male Role Models who have excelled in different fields and who made a difference in one way or the other. So who made it to the list? See them below:

Sports – Manny Pacquiao

Although his last boxing match with Marquez was sparked by controversy, I really admire Pacman for his passion in his sport. This guy is one of the very few who started from nowhere but his hardwork and dedication to boxing paid-off and catapulted him to where he is right now.

What I like best about him is that he is down-to-earth and God-fearing no matter how successful he is. A good role model? I’d say absolutely!

Science & Technology - Charles Babbage

It might be the first time you’ve heard his name, but without him, maybe you wouldn’t be surfing the Internet now nor would you have a computer reading this article from Pinoy Guy Guide.

So who is he? He is the father of computers. Despite the lack of money and research funding during his time, he still managed to invent the difference engine which was an automatic, mechanical calculator. Now that mechanical calculator evolved to the computers we have today. I know he’s not as famous as Bill Gates nor the late Steve Jobs but hey, this dude deserves some credit for his hardwork!

Celebrity / Music – Allan Pineda Lindo, Jr. (a.k.a. apl.de.ap of The Black Eyed Peas)

He is half-Filipino who came from a broken family in Angeles Pampanga but that did not stop him to go from being no one to someone who is a member of a very successful and popular group in the music industry – The Black Eyed Peas.

What I like about him is that although he is half-American, it looks like he is more proud to be Pinoy as evident in the lyrics of his songs and his official website which displays the map of the Philippines as the splash screen. And to top that off, he is also doing charitable works for the youth here in the Philippines. Such a great guy!

Style – David Beckham

You must be surprised that I placed him in the style category and not in sports where he is best known for. Well the reason being is that:

1.) He is a well-known football player and like him I used to play football too. (though I’m not as good as him, that’s for sure.)

and at the same time…

2.) He is a men’s style icon and he even said in one of his interviews that he loves to look his best all the time .

Beckham is one of the very few sports people that I know who perfectly combines being athletic and stylish at the same time. He always tries to be his best even if he is in his mid-thirties already. It only proves that age does not matter at all.

And it does not end there. I have read somewhere that aside from being a football and style icon, he is supporting UNICEF’s projects as part of his charity work.

They also have kick-ass jeans but one thing I have noticed strange about them are their sizes. Apparently, their sizes are a bit smaller than other brands. For instance, a size large for AntiFit is a size medium for the majority of the other brands and a size medium for AntiFit is a size small for the majority of the other brands. Initially, I thought that the brand is only for teens but it is not as confirmed by one of their sales ladies. It’s just that they love small and fit sizes so better watch what you eat when you wear AntiFit (I guess their name says it all). Nevertheless, I would say that they are a new, refreshing and a hip brand to try. The price of their clothes are not too expensive so check them out next time when you go to the department store and let me know what you think.

Since it is a very popular game, the Angry Birds have arrived in all sorts of merchandise. From kid’s clothes, pillows, coffee mugs, cellphone pouches and yes – even men’s fashion shirts.

Initially, I thought that only kids would buy those shirts. It surprised me that even grown-ups (both men and women I’m telling you) are wearing these shirts here in the Philippines and also in other countries.

So how about you? Have you bought any Angry Birds merchandise yet? Wait, let me rephrase it – have you actually worn an Angry Birds shirt?

As for me, I’m planning to buy a shirt just for fun, since I’m a fan of the game too. And guess what? Today I found an Angry Birds cake! Oh well, what could be next for the Angry Birds phenomenon?

But even though my past relationships with these women failed and didn’t last, I got something out of it. I learned a few things or let me say lessons that every guy should remember whenever they enter a relationship. So let me share with you guys a few do’s and dont’s that you should know so that you could apply it to your life and relationships as well.


1. Always keep in touch with your girlfriend
This is probably one of the main reasons for my past breakups. I admit I’m not the type of guy who is fond of texting my location and whereabouts. It’s not that I’m cheating on her. It’s just that I’m too lazy to text and the difficulty of typing texts in touchscreen phones these days just got me lazier. Such a lame excuse right?

My advice: After realizing my own mistake, it is now clearer to me than ever that you should always text or call your girlfriend from time to time. Tell her what you are doing, ask her how she is doing, ask her if she’s taken her lunch and so on. Even a simple Facebook wall post saying you miss her (no matter how cheesy it sounds) is enough to make her happy.


2. Learn to accept her for who she is
We all have our own tastes when it comes to the women we date. Personally, I cannot handle naggers, smokers, flirts and girls who have a certain degree of weirdness in them. What if she has a dark past? Say she was a former ecstasy addict, a lesbian or may heaven forbid: a former prostitute? Well that seems a bit exaggerated but it can happen. It’s up to you whether you can accept her for who she is and who she’s not. Your tolerance level to her negative traits is a measure of how long your relationship will last.

My advice: Before making that hot girl your girlfriend, control your crotch and make sure to get to know her well first. If you can accept her for who she is in the same way she accepts you for who you are, then that is the time to make her your girlfriend.


3. Quality time at least once per week
I understand that we can get busy with our own lives. I had my own fair share of overtimes, holidays at work, family and friends getaway, blogging activities and so on. Now with all those things going on with our lives, it’s easy to forget to ask your girlfriend out on a quality date. Sometimes you are just too exhausted that you would rather sleep all day at home than spend time with your girlfriend. But those are not valid reasons to not go out on a date at least once a week and by that “date”, I mean you and your girlfriend alone.

My advice: Although typically you would go out 2-3 times a week with your girlfriend, you two as a couple have to go out at least once a week in case you are truly busy. That’s the minimum. Any fewer than that frequency will cause ugly fights, cold relationships or just the bitter end – breakups.

4. Fighting is healthy
I used to have a girlfriend whom I never had a single fight with. I thought it was awesome but at the same time weird. I realized that the reason why we never had a fight is that we were both keeping to ourselves secretly what we do not like about each other. That was until that fateful day came when we just both exploded in angst and we had a HUGE fight. That single huge fight ended our relationship.

My advice: Openness is very important in any relationship. Telling your partner how you feel, what you like and what you do not like is needed in order to know each other better and to make the relationship last. It is also necessary to set some rules and guidelines between you and your girlfriend. Things as simple as what time you expect her to be home, what clothes she is forbidden to wear, how many bottles of beer she allows you to drink on a boys night out are all necessary so that you fulfill each other’s expectations.


5. Badmouthing is a big NO-NO!
This is related to number 4. Sometimes when we get into fights or quarrels with our girlfriends, we tend to vent those emotions to our beer buddies or other male colleagues in order to get some consolation and to ask for advice. We might even go overboard by badmouthing our own girlfriends – telling everyone how much of a bitch or slut she is and the list goes on. Worse, we might even tell our family (our parents or siblings) in advance that we have broken up with her and that we swear not to get back with her no matter what. Then suddenly, after a few days, you and your girlfriend resolve things and voila – you two are back in each other’s arms.

Now what will your beer buddies, colleagues and family think once you tell them that you have fixed things with your girlfriend and you two are back together? They will think that you are such an idiot! And the worst part of it is that your girlfriend already has a permanent mark in their minds that she is a bitch, a slut, or whatever-bad-adjective-you-used-to-badmouth-her-while-you-two-were-having-a-quarrel. A fugly situation isn’t it?

My advice: Whenever you and your girlfriend have a fight, please keep it between the two of you and resolve it on your own. Or if you just can’t and you find that you need to tell someone to preserve your own sanity, then open up to your most trusted male friend (probably a best friend) who understands you. NOTE: I said trusted male friend because most of the time, female friends cause much gossip you wouldn’t want.

Also, as much as possible, do not open up your girlfriend problems with your parents or siblings unless you are 100% sure that you no longer want to get back with her again. Parents and siblings have a tendency to remember everything you say about your girlfriend and they will naturally take your side (which on one hand is a good thing). On the other hand, the bad thing happens when you and your girlfriend get back together and subsequently get married. Well guess what? Your family will always remember her as someone who is not completely trustworthy for hurting you in the past. Not a very ideal scenario between your wife and her in-laws isn’t it?

So there you have it. These are the five things every guy ought to know when it comes to relationships. I have learned this the hard way through my own experiences and some from my peers. On the bright side, I realized, that these shirts make good presents for monthsaries or anniversaries. Your girlfriend will really appreciate your effort for something like this. Just make sure that when you wear this shirt, your girlfriend is always beside you. Otherwise, when she’s not around or when you’re all by yourself walking alone, the statement on the shirt doesn’t really make sense.

The controversial article – published in Yahoo over here – mentions three very intriguing points:

1. That 48% of Filipino guys found themselves sexually attractive compared to 25% of men in Singapore, 17% in China and Taiwan and only 12% of Hong Kong guys who think of the same thing about themselves.

2. That 9 out of 10 Filipino men wanted to look good for themselves, not for anyone else.

3. That Filipino guys are too busy gazing lustfully at themselves in the mirror.

If this study was that accurate, then Hail Narcissus!

Greek Mythology has it that Narcissus was so obsessed (and in love) with his own reflection in the pool that he jumped in the pool and drowned (or in some myth versions, just died watching his reflection in the pool). Well, I hope that Filipino guys won’t do anything as crazy and stupid as that.

I do think however, that it’s cool to dress up, groom and look good for the women and to feel great about yourself. Looking your best self can spell the difference between dating the hottest girl and being turned down (a.k.a. “basted”) OR in in some cases, getting that dream job and being unemployed. Looking good is a confidence booster BUT don’t overdo it. Because as cliché as it may sound: too much of something is bad. Actually, being too vain is a huge turn-off for chicks you know.
