Singapore is one of Asia’s fashion hubs and during the time I was there, I was lucky enough to witness the grand opening of Abercrombie & Fitch (A&F) – an American casual clothing retailer. They are a well-known clothing brand internationally and believe it or not, during their opening, lots of people (men and women) were lining up outside their store. The scenery looked like Apple’s launching of the iPhone – yes, they are that popular.

One of the things that attracted people to their store is the very fragrant scent. Apparently, Abercrombie sprayed their men’s cologne named “Fierce” all over the store. It just smelled so good that even people walking right outside the store were wondering who was wearing the perfume. Little did they know that it is the entire shop that was smelling so good.

And the strategy worked very well for Abercrombie & Fitch. Lots of guys (I included) soon found the men’s cologne, queued and bought it.

The sad thing is that there is no Abercrombie & Fitch store here in Manila so I just don’t know where to buy the fragrance once I use up the entire bottle.

Now speaking of A&F clothes, I’d say they are made of good quality but they are a bit pricey for casual clothes. Their shirts cost around 120 SGD (roughly 3,000 Pesos) making them not just an average brand but more of a luxury clothing. Not to mention that their sizes are usually bigger than what we have in Manila as their clothes are catered mostly for Americans so it is understandable that they have larger sizes.

All in all, I would recommend Abercrombie & Fitch for those who have extra money for luxury clothes and for those who need bigger clothes sizes than what we have in the Philippines. Also, I would like to reiterate that Abercrombie’s Fierce Cologne is probably one of the best men’s fragrances I have smelled so far aside from Lacoste Essential.

Surprisingly, in our country, we don’t celebrate it. Actually, I was clueless about it until I stumbled upon an article in Wikipedia a couple of years back.

The idea of celebrating men’s day is for the promotion of men’s health, gender equality and to highlight positive male role models.

So let’s see. In celebration of this year’s International Men’s Day, Pinoy Guy Guide names Four Male Role Models who have excelled in different fields and who made a difference in one way or the other. So who made it to the list? See them below:

Sports – Manny Pacquiao

Although his last boxing match with Marquez was sparked by controversy, I really admire Pacman for his passion in his sport. This guy is one of the very few who started from nowhere but his hardwork and dedication to boxing paid-off and catapulted him to where he is right now.

What I like best about him is that he is down-to-earth and God-fearing no matter how successful he is. A good role model? I’d say absolutely!

Science & Technology - Charles Babbage

It might be the first time you’ve heard his name, but without him, maybe you wouldn’t be surfing the Internet now nor would you have a computer reading this article from Pinoy Guy Guide.

So who is he? He is the father of computers. Despite the lack of money and research funding during his time, he still managed to invent the difference engine which was an automatic, mechanical calculator. Now that mechanical calculator evolved to the computers we have today. I know he’s not as famous as Bill Gates nor the late Steve Jobs but hey, this dude deserves some credit for his hardwork!

Celebrity / Music – Allan Pineda Lindo, Jr. (a.k.a. apl.de.ap of The Black Eyed Peas)

He is half-Filipino who came from a broken family in Angeles Pampanga but that did not stop him to go from being no one to someone who is a member of a very successful and popular group in the music industry – The Black Eyed Peas.

What I like about him is that although he is half-American, it looks like he is more proud to be Pinoy as evident in the lyrics of his songs and his official website which displays the map of the Philippines as the splash screen. And to top that off, he is also doing charitable works for the youth here in the Philippines. Such a great guy!

Style – David Beckham

You must be surprised that I placed him in the style category and not in sports where he is best known for. Well the reason being is that:

1.) He is a well-known football player and like him I used to play football too. (though I’m not as good as him, that’s for sure.)

and at the same time…

2.) He is a men’s style icon and he even said in one of his interviews that he loves to look his best all the time .

Beckham is one of the very few sports people that I know who perfectly combines being athletic and stylish at the same time. He always tries to be his best even if he is in his mid-thirties already. It only proves that age does not matter at all.

And it does not end there. I have read somewhere that aside from being a football and style icon, he is supporting UNICEF’s projects as part of his charity work.

Feiyue
Don’t know how to pronounce it? Me neither. But I’ve read somewhere that it should be pronounced something like fay-yweh.

Anyway, the word Feiyue means “Flying Forward” and is originally a Chinese sneaker brand which was used for martial arts. In recent times however, a French businessman bought the brand and since then the shoes have become more of a fashion item though some of their shoes can still be used for martial arts. Take a look at some of their hot collections below.

Sperry Top-siders
Sperry is the founder and original inventor of boat shoes similar to the one you’ll see below. The company has a long history and they have been around for quite some time in other countries but not yet in the Philippines until now. Take a peek at some of their collections below.

One of the most notable things about Sperry Top-siders is their trademark barrel lace knot on their shoe laces which is not that easy to imitate but is something which must be learned by anyone who owns boat shoes.

If you are into Sperry Top-siders and Feiyue, you can find them in Shoe Salon stores. I think that Complex store in Eastwood has them too and a single pair costs around 3,500 Pesos on average.

In the past few years we have seen that khaki pants were just no longer cool. People saw it as old school – something you used to wear back in elementary days as part of your school uniform and also something that ordinary guys wear at the office.

But a few weeks ago, everything changed when Dockers sent me their latest press release regarding their new Alpha Khakis. Dockers kind of revved up the khaki pants by adding vibrant colors and variety to them and also changing the cut from the usual straight cut to the modern slim fit. Something which fashion forward men are exactly looking for.

I guess if you are a little tired with those blue jeans, you might want to check out the Dockers Alpha Khakis. These are ultimately for the Alpha Males who want to set the trend.

Another interesting thing about these Khakis is that they come in three different finishes. They have the Scraped (1Y) finish that gives it the 1-year old look. They have the Dirty (5Y) finish that gives it the worn out 5-year old look. And they also have the Destroyed (10Y) finish that looks like the pants have been ripped and stained to give that 10-year old look. This is somewhat similar to the look that some people like in their jeans. In a nutshell, the Dockers Alpha Khakis are sort of a hybrid between denims and khakis.

The controversial article – published in Yahoo over here – mentions three very intriguing points:

1. That 48% of Filipino guys found themselves sexually attractive compared to 25% of men in Singapore, 17% in China and Taiwan and only 12% of Hong Kong guys who think of the same thing about themselves.

2. That 9 out of 10 Filipino men wanted to look good for themselves, not for anyone else.

3. That Filipino guys are too busy gazing lustfully at themselves in the mirror.

If this study was that accurate, then Hail Narcissus!

Greek Mythology has it that Narcissus was so obsessed (and in love) with his own reflection in the pool that he jumped in the pool and drowned (or in some myth versions, just died watching his reflection in the pool). Well, I hope that Filipino guys won’t do anything as crazy and stupid as that.

I do think however, that it’s cool to dress up, groom and look good for the women and to feel great about yourself. Looking your best self can spell the difference between dating the hottest girl and being turned down (a.k.a. “basted”) OR in in some cases, getting that dream job and being unemployed. Looking good is a confidence booster BUT don’t overdo it. Because as cliché as it may sound: too much of something is bad. Actually, being too vain is a huge turn-off for chicks you know.

Giordano is launching a Typographic Tee Design Contest. The contest is calling all enthusiasts ages 15 and up to create a statement shirt design or a typographic tee design which revolves around Giordano’s ever popular theme and slogan – “World Without Strangers”.

The design should be created using Adobe Photoshop or Macromedia Freehand format. The top seven finalists will receive Php 25,000 in cash and Php 5,000 worth of gift certificates. Giordano will also give away consolation prizes for the eight semi-finalists. Each semi-finalist will receive Php 10,000 cash plus Php 5,000 worth of gift certificates.

The contest will run from March 21 to June 30, 2011. I think that the best part of it is that the winning designs will be featured in Giordano’s upcoming collection and will be available in Giordano stores. I first found out about this brand of shoes a couple of months ago at the launching of Complex Store, a shoe shop in Eastwood Mall. Complex Store carries several brands of shoes but what stood out for me is Creative Recreation (there’s something awesome about the name and their product line).

They are not your ordinary shoes and there is something unique about them. When the founders of Creative Recreation were asked during an interview of what category their shoes belonged to they said that they didn’t want to be put into the category of formal, casual, leather or any shoe type. All that they said was Creative Recreation is a “lifestyle shoe”.

Some people got confused with the term “lifestyle shoe”. But personally, I do like their idea. It’s like having that particular favorite shoe that you’d like to wear on almost all occasions possible – office, school, gimmicks, parties, dates or even vacations. This is really good news for students without school uniforms and for yuppies who would like to wear groovy shoes. Most offices these days in Manila are less strict in implementing formal clothing so I guess lots of guys could probably wear this type of shoes at work.

Now let’s take a look below at some of Creative Recreation’s latest collection. You’ve got to love them all as much as I do.

So yesterday, I had plenty of time to spare so I went with my brother and with my parents to visit the shop. It is located in Newport Mall at Resorts World Manila just across NAIA terminal 3.

Just an FYI. Resorts World Manila is such a beautiful place. It has a 6-star hotel (the only one in the country), a casino and a high-class mall. Very luxurious indeed. I’ll try to cover Resorts World Manila in future posts.

Now going back to Porsche Design, here is a quick look at their products. Click image to zoom in.

Their products will blow you away. They are not cheap and are for those dudes who are looking for signature, high-quality and luxurious products. A pair of shoe costs around 12,000 Pesos. A pair of sandals cost around 14,000 Pesos. And a watch? I have seen one costing as much as 130,000 Pesos (No joke. That is not a typo error. It is the actual tag price I have seen). But hey, if you are like Manny Pacquiao who has tons of cash to burn, why not?

Anyways, aren’t you curious why the shop is called Porsche Design? Well that is because its parent company is Porsche AG (pronounced as Porsh-uh), the same company that produces every guy’s dream car.

At first, it might seem bizarre to see comic sketches on shirts, shorts, vests and even long-sleeves but if you come to think of it – isn’t it cool to wear one of these?
