Well it looks like we are in for another round of nerdy men’s fashion as Regatta has recently partnered with Discovery Channel. The result? Discovery’s very own “The World Is Just Awesome” tagline shirts:

So it seems that the intelligent lifestyle is really in nowadays right?

Hmm, not bad. I even think it is a good and positive campaign considering that these days, many students are just copying and pasting projects from the Internet without even bothering to read. In this time and era, statement shirts like these do help a lot to increase awareness that being nerdy and curious is not bad. It’s actually cool!

Today I’m featuring a couple of their men’s shorts which are cool to wear this summer.

At initial glance, you might think that these shorts just sport some odd, abstract design but upon closer look, you will slowly recognize the words “MANILA” and “PILIPINAS” written on it.

These monochromatic shorts cost a bit high (around 1400 Pesos). Nevertheless, they are perfect to pair with any brightly colored top thereby putting you on the top of your style this summer.

Interestingly enough, those models wearing the stripe summer collection from Solo are Mehran Khaledi and Phoebe Rutaquio. They are the winners of Solo’s Online Model Search 2011 which I featured a few months ago and they will be the official endorsers of the brand throughout the year.

Anyway, when I went to Solo’s boutique, there is one kind of stripe which caught my attention. It’s their men’s striped tank top (sando) with hood.

Pretty cool I must say! It’s not too often that you would find a men’s hoodie sando so this one is definitely a must-have  before you hit the beach this summer season. Check out more of those stripes at Solo stores.

And I think my wish is slowly coming true. Right now, the Philippine National Football team a.k.a. AZKALS is doing well in regional football games. I am excited to see lots of Pinoys who are starting to get interested in the sport as a result of the feats by the AZKALS. Although the AZKALS may have a long way to go and will need to do double (even triple) time to qualify for the FIFA World Cup, I am glad that they helped awaken the interest of Filipinos in football.

So why not show your love and support for the Philippine National Football Team? Instead of wearing statement shirts with prints such as “USA”, “NBA”, “LA Lakers”, “Real Madrid” etc., why not wear an AZKALS Pilipinas Futbol shirt?

Wearing an AZKALS shirt will not only inspire the AZKALS footballers to do their best in their upcoming tournaments but will also raise the consciousness of other guys about how fun and beautiful the football sport is.

If I remember correctly, the last time I saw Pinoys wearing their pride was two years ago when Pinoy Shirts and Three Stars and a Sun were in. That Filipino pride seem to have faded as the months went by so let’s all revive it by wearing an AZKALS shirt. This time I hope that the nationalistic spirit and football interest will not be just a fad but more of a permanent ideology within each Pinoy.

The AZKALS Pilipinas Futbol shirts are available in American Boulevard outlets (I know, it’s ironic that the store’s name is American but they are selling a Pilipinas shirt). The shirts cost around 499 Pesos each and comes with a free AZKALS magazine.

I remember the first time I wore my AZKALS shirt (the one pictured above). My friends, officemates and even strangers stared at it and said “Wow, that’s a cool shirt you have there! Where did you get it?”.

So yesterday, I had plenty of time to spare so I went with my brother and with my parents to visit the shop. It is located in Newport Mall at Resorts World Manila just across NAIA terminal 3.

Just an FYI. Resorts World Manila is such a beautiful place. It has a 6-star hotel (the only one in the country), a casino and a high-class mall. Very luxurious indeed. I’ll try to cover Resorts World Manila in future posts.

Now going back to Porsche Design, here is a quick look at their products. Click image to zoom in.

Their products will blow you away. They are not cheap and are for those dudes who are looking for signature, high-quality and luxurious products. A pair of shoe costs around 12,000 Pesos. A pair of sandals cost around 14,000 Pesos. And a watch? I have seen one costing as much as 130,000 Pesos (No joke. That is not a typo error. It is the actual tag price I have seen). But hey, if you are like Manny Pacquiao who has tons of cash to burn, why not?

Anyways, aren’t you curious why the shop is called Porsche Design? Well that is because its parent company is Porsche AG (pronounced as Porsh-uh), the same company that produces every guy’s dream car.

Well, probably it is. I have seen people (and yes, they are guys) wearing exactly the same contact lenses. I think that some people can really pull it off well especially if their skin color matches that of the contact lenses.

So what about you? What do you think about these so-called “vampire contact lenses”?

They carry numerous brands in their store but one brand that stood out for me in particular was Avirex, a brand also owned by Marc Ecko. I just couldn’t resist the temptation to buy so I gave in and bought this shirt below. Notice how stylish the shirt is both at the front…

…and at the back.

I wanted to buy both colors from the same design but I thought it was kind of silly to do so. So I just bought the yellow one since I already have plenty of green shirts in my wardrobe. What’s cooler was these shirts were on 50% off when I bought one last week. If you want one too, hurry to their store ASAP!

I will certainly keep an eye on the Avirex brand and the American Rag Cie store. They really have outstanding, not to mention inexpensive apparel for style-conscious boys like us. I suggest you check them out too.

Mind you that the cartoon prints are from Larry Alcala, a renowned Filipino Cartoonist. At first, it might seem bizarre to see comic sketches on shirts, shorts, vests and even long-sleeves but if you come to think of it – isn’t it cool to wear one of these? Retrosexual is a word that has been used in two very different ways.

It sometimes describes an old-fashioned “manly man” – e.g. a beer and football-loving guy who cares little for his appearance.

But it has also been used, as in the example above, to describe someone who self-consciously adopts traditional masculine styles – e.g. old-fashioned manners and clothes typical of the early 1960s (think Mad Men).

Well it seems to me that maybe this is a men’s fashion revolution – and I guess men’s style and fashion of the past are coming back. Remember the Freemasons and Illustrados of the 1800′s?  The way they dress with that formal suit look, decent tie, walking staff and a smoking pipe?

How about the cowboys in Marlboro’s past advertisements?

I think that society is bringing back that classic and gentleman look in men’s style and clothing and perhaps that is the very reason why we are seeing Fedora hats recently.

Maybe retrosexual is just another fashion trend to some, but I guess the question is: Is there really a genuine retrosexual man who honestly doesn’t give a damn about looks, about hairstyle, about clothes and all that stuff?

Kanye West

Arguably one of the biggest names in the music industry today. Kanye West dominates the rap music industry, having four smash albums in four glorious years. But one of the things that makes him special is his incredible fashion sense. The man is addicted to fashion. He’s the one who started the whole preppy hip-hop look and the rest is history. The hip-hop community embraced his sense of style and followed suit. The man loves European fashion to death. Jordan’s and fabioso sunglasses (read: shutter shades) are must-haves as well. One thing we guys can learn from this 10-time Grammy Award winner is to not be afraid of colors. From lime green to pink, purple to electric blue, as long as it makes your entire look more distinct, go for it! Because if it doesn’t kill you, then it can only make you stronger – fashion-wise, at least.


Victor Basa

There are a bunch of actors and models out there who tried their best to impress when it comes to fashion – and failed. But one guy who makes such an impact when it comes to fashion without really exerting any effort is MTV VJ / Model – Victor Basa. He began immersing himself into the fashion industry at an early age. He even entered LaSalle College International as a student in fashion design. I guess it runs in the blood since his uncle, Paolo Basa, is also a well-renowned fashion designer. Basa is the definition of metrosexual in the local scene. If you see him wearing some sick hoodie today, chances are – it’s still not out in the market yet. You may also think that Vic is just too willing to wear anything for endorsement’s sake, but it is exactly the mindset that sets him apart. He will keep you guessing. He rotates his look regularly and always tries to defy all style rules. The most recognizable element of his vast wardrobe, however, is his distressed jeans which is a good place to start when you want to wear something different for the day. Vic’s definitely the edgiest male model in the Philippines. A guru in his own sense.


Justin Timberlake

In my opinion, no other guy from the boy band era made such a huge leap forward than Mr.Sexyback himself. Justin Timberlake transformed himself from being a clown with N’Sync to one of the most fashionable men in the world. He turned the slick, classy but relaxed look that goes well with his dynamic personality into an art form. He’s a student of fashion. He wears his clothes, instead of letting his clothes wear him. He has the right combination of well-made clothing worn in a relaxed style therefore exuding this unmatched level of sophistication and class for the young professional. One surefire way to look smoking hot the J-Timberlake way on a dress-up party is to find a perfect-fitting suit, preferably bespoke if you can afford it, with strong shoulders, a tapered waist, lean legs, and a coat or a jacket that covers your butt. JT is the main reason why I will forever feel insecure as a man and a human being.
