A Guy’s Guide to Stress Management

Stress, exhaustion, disappointment are just some of the things that could get your head to its boiling point. And sadly, for the past few days I have become an instant victim of both stress and exhaustion due to constant pressure I receive on a daily basis. Oh we just hate deadlines don’t we?

Whether you are a student cramming late night to do homeworks and review for exams or simply an average working guy like me who seems to be working overtime (think, 10-12+ hours per day) just because we know that we are responsible enough to complete our work then here are some of the tips I’d like to share on how to keep your head COOL especially when you have several tasks on hand.

1. Listen to music
Music relaxes your spirit and relieves your mind from all the worries that come along. Make sure to listen to your favorite music because it really does help a lot to maintain your cool-headedness.

2. Once in a while, take a break
Don’t push yourself too hard. Take a short break and make sure to relax for a few minutes. Based from experience, having breaks between your tasks would help you to recondition your mind so that you could have a look at your tasks from a different, but better perspective.

3. Learn to say “NO”
As a guy this used to be one of my biggest mistakes. I used to have this attitude to say YES to every task that comes along even if the time alloted is no longer enough and this really stressed me a lot. But lately, I have learned to become honest enough to tell frankly if I will be able to finish a task on time or not. But I always make sure to give a valid and reasonable explanation whenever I need to move the deadline to a later date.

Saying “NO” does not literally mean that you are rejecting a task. It simply means that you are accepting the task but are asking for reasonable amount of time to complete it in order to produce quality work without losing your mind.

4. Exercise
Aside from helping you to lose or maintain weight, exercise does help you release stress. Make sure to get at least 2-3 times a week.

5. Talk to friends
Chatting with friends on lunch breaks even for just a few minutes will help you lighten up. Remember that a few laughs can help you to avoid burnout!

These are just some of the things I do when I’m stressed and it really helps me to think positively. Keep in mind that there will always be responsibilities. Just make sure that YOU are the one MANAGING your own responsibilities and NOT the other way around.
