Title: ☾ The ☆ Astronomy ☄ Thread ☽
Post by: carpediem on April 26, 2011, 11:48:48 PM
Anything about astronomy.

I am personally not knowledgeable, but I frequently find articles about astronomy fascinating. I'll just post any interesting stuff I may find here.

Feel free to discuss, or even philosophize.

Just don't post about UFO sightings and alien conspiracy theories.

OT: iba pumasok sa isip ko when i read heavenly bodies. sorry medyo tinotopak hahaha

So how do you know na planet ang nakikita mo, not a star? And how do you locate them?

Remember the smiley sky last year (ata)? One of the eyes was Jupiter. :-)

Mars can be seen in the Philippine night sky around the month of August. It's your month Luc. :-)

^planets move. stars don't. no, you won't see them move right away, there are certain days (for fast planets like venus and mercury)  and certain months (slower planets) that they are not in location. and in as much the same, we are supposedly able to view a certain sky on a certain season. this is more applicable to other hemispheres kc sa tropics, more or less magkaparehas lng sky natin the year round.
Title: Re: ☾ The ☆ Astronomy ☄ Thread ☽

^^ not all the time. :-) they move because they have orbits. hehehe.
Title: Re: ☾ The ☆ Astronomy ☄ Thread ☽
Post by: Luc on April 27, 2011, 12:57:59 AM
Hmm parang di pa ako nakakita ng Mars din. Madali lang ang Venus ma spot. It's that brightest "star" in the morning at a very small angle near the sun. Mercury is near venus. It's smaller and nearer to the sun. By daytime, di mo na sila ma-appreciate.

Planetary alignment is a phenomen. I'm not sure when that last happened, but people of different race and religion relate it to a great omen. I didn't really bother searching more on that.

hehehe.

when i was younger, gradeshool siguro ako nun, i have with me a sky map - constellation, stars and planets, na lagi kong ginagamit almost every night para mag observe sa night sky. mas visible kasi ang night sky sa province kesa dito sa manila.

^that is so true doc. if there's one thing i really love about the province, it's their night sky, where it's clearer and far from the bright lights of the city. you see more stars that way.

One of the amazing events that I look forward to in the night sky ay yung mga meteor showers. :-) Kahit mahirap dito sa Manila, I really try and do my best na maka-witness. :-)

Mahirap dyan sa city doc! Sa province mo yan pinapanood napakaganda daw. Pero di ko pa nawitness ito sa province din. x10 showers ang difference daw.

At a clear night, I always find time to spot Betelgeuse and Rigel in Orion. :)

^ never heard about Barnard's star

Yes our sun will probably become a red giant and swallow up the earth, but that's several billion years from now. By then humans should have migrated to other parts of the universe, that is assuming humans survive long enough without being wiped out by natural or self-induced cataclysmic events.

^^ Mt. Olympus vs. Mt. Everest vs Mauna Kea

Rising above the Red Planets frequent dust storms is the Olympus Mons -the tallest known volcano and mountain in our solar system. The central edifice of this shield volcano stands 27 kilometers ( 88,580 ft) high above the surface -or three times the elevation of Mount Everest above sea level and 2.6 times the height of Mauna Kea above its base. It is 550 km in width, flanked by steep cliffs, and has a caldera complex that is 85 km long, 60 km wide, and up to 3 km deep with six overlapping pit craters. Its outer edge is defined by an escarpment up to 6 km tall; unique among the shield volcanoes of the Red Planet.

Malapit na daw mag supernova ang Betelgeuse. They say within the next million years. Since it is hundreds of light years away, maybe the process has already begun.
Title: Re: ☾ The ☆ Astronomy ☄ Thread ☽
Post by: carpediem on April 27, 2011, 11:56:55 AM
Maybe not everyone knows this.

When you look at the night sky, you are looking at the stars as they were years ago, depending on how far they are. If a star is 1 million light years away, then you are looking at its appearance when it was 1 million years ago, because it takes its light that number of years to travel to earth.

In short, we are looking at very, very old snapshots of the stars, some of them may not exist anymore!

i think these are just refractions of light because of the atmosphere fin. but i heard that fog and a dominant color of light in our atmosphere also affect how we see our moon.

It was a red giant to begin with which is a later part of a star's life cycle. What's cool is, we will never see it in our lifetime dying, or even my great great grandchildren's.

moon... saan ba to galing?

   1. The Fission Theory: The Moon was once part of the Earth and somehow separated from the Earth early in the history of the Solar System. The present Pacific Ocean basin is the most popular site for the part of the Earth from which the Moon came.

   2. The Capture Theory: The Moon was formed somewhere else, and was later captured by the gravitational field of the Earth.

   3. The Condensation Theory: The Moon and the Earth condensed together from the original nebula that formed the Solar System.

   4. The Colliding Planetesimals Theory: The interaction of earth-orbiting and Sun-orbiting planetesimals (very large chunks of rocks like asteroids) early in the history of the Solar System led to their breakup. The Moon condensed from this debris.

   5. The Ejected Ring Theory: A planetesimal the size of Mars struck the earth, ejecting large volumes of matter. A disk of orbiting material was formed, and this matter eventually condensed to form the Moon in orbit around the Earth.

An obligatory post, which I've also posted in "Interesting Reads on Philosophy" -

The Pale Blue Dot

Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there--on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.

Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.

The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand.

It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.

PAGASA: 2011's finest planetary alignments to occur in May

Five planets will align at least three more times this month in what state astronomers considered as the "finest planetary conjunctions" of this year.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the planets will line up in the eastern horizon at 5 a.m. on May 9, 13, and 30.

"Mars, Jupiter, Mercury, Venus, Uranus and Neptune will be found lining-up above the eastern horizon ... (For) Uranus and Neptune (stargazers) will be needing a star map and a binocular or a modest-sized telescope for its proper viewing," PAGASA acting administrator Nathaniel Servando said in PAGASA's astronomical diary for May.

"Saturn will be visible in the evening sky throughout the month. The Ringed planet will be located among the background stars of the constellation Virgo," he added.

Also, he said the planets will lie among the background stars of the constellation Pisces, except for Neptune, which will be found at the constellation of Aquarius.

He said the first line-up already occurred last May 1.

Big Dipper

Servando also said that after sunset, the grouping of stars known as Big Dipper is well placed high in the northeastern sky.

"The North Star Polaris can easily be located under normal weather condition by using the reference or the pointing stars namely Dubhe and Merak. By using their distance, an imaginary line can be drawn downward passing to these two stars and counting five times," he said.

Polaris is the end point star of the handle of the Small Dipper while the curved handle of the Big Dipper is pointing towards a bright orange star Arcturus of the constellation Bootes. — LBG, GMA News

The Pale Red Dot: Most Distant Galaxy Ever Discovered

"Astronomers have used Hubble to spot what they think is the furthest and one of the very earliest galaxies ever seen in the Universe. Candidate galaxy UDFj-39546284 appears as a faint red blob in this ultra deep field exposure taken with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. This is the deepest infrared image taken of the Universe. Based on the object's colour, astronomers believe that its light has taken 13.2 billion years to reach us. The current known age of the Universe is 13.7 billion years."

haha cool.

May bagong planet daw sa Gliese_581 constellation confirmed to have liquid in water form!  :o
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gliese_581_d (ewan ko kung updated ba ang wiki nito, nabasa ko lang din sa newspaper eh)

And I found both of their projects cool: A Message From Earth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Message_From_Earth) and Hello From Earth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hello_From_Earth). Para lang kahawig ng colonization era noon, only in space. Sent to the solar system (Gliese_581).

http://gizmodo.com/5802902/new-home-for-humans

Cosmos magazine reports that French researchers think they've found the first planet other than Earth capable of sustaining life, concluding that it probably has a dense carbon dioxide atmosphere and that "the climate of Gliese 581d is not only stable against collapse but warm enough to have oceans, clouds and rainfall." Yes! I just set some coal on fire to watch that shit burn.

It orbits the star Gliese 581 in the so-called Goldilocks zone (not too hot; not too cold), which means that water is likely to exist there in liquid form. Gliese 581d is about twice the size of Earth, if seven times its mass. It's a neighbor of Gliese 581g, or Zarmina's World, but unlike that planet, it is certain that this one exists. Sweet!

NASA to Abandon Mars Spirit Rover (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/25/science/space/25rover.html)

"NASA said on Tuesday that it was abandoning efforts to get back in touch with Spirit, one of the two rovers on Mars. Spirit, which has been stuck in a sand trap for two years, fell silent last year as winter arrived and its solar panels could no longer generate enough electricity. Engineers had hoped that the rover would revive when spring returned, but they never heard from it again."

HUGE Explosion on the Sun (http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/2011/06/07/the-sun-lets-loose-a-huge-explosion/)

as big as the sun itself. Massive magnetic interference in the next few days?

Comet Elenin
(https://www.pinoyguyguide.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fscottcwaring.files.wordpress.com%2F2011%2F05%2F356ec822-f36f-4834-88d9-c78e41b7e2ac113.jpg&hash=a6f6419dafc2a87688d7b6066f22df7459538de0)

Is it just me who's thinking that this comet Elenin looks more like a 4-km huge spacecraft or something?

It was said that this comet will enter the solar system and will head a bit close to earth.

Asteroid To Buzz Earth Monday, June 27th

Asteroid 2011 MD, a chunk of rock estimated to be 25 to 55 feet (8 to 18 m) across, is expected to pass less than 8,000 miles above Earth's surface around 1 p.m. EDT (17:00 UT) on Monday, June 27th. The actual event will be observable only from South Africa and parts of Antarctica, but the approach will be visible across Australia, New Zealand, southern and eastern Asia, and the western Pacific.
