Basically, to answer your question, dapat contrasting colors. Parang ganito:
Navy Blue jeans -> bagay dito ang white shirt, then dark colored shoes.
White Jeans -> Any dark color: black, dark blue, maroon, etc.
Gray Jeans -> I usually wear this with a black shirt.

pasensya na 'pre wala pa ako sa rules ng color matching. nasa basics pa rin ako ng tamang fit. parehas kong ginagawa na monochromatic and contrast sa damit. meaning i wear my black pants with dark grey tees then white sneaks and minsan black pants at dirty white tees and white sneaks or sometimes black hightops.
pero kung streetwear style mo they usually match their tops sa sneakers.... for example blue tees then blue sneakers... sa pants madalas raw selvedge denim kung streetwear.
tip, fit muna bago lahat then define your style kung:
1. streetwear - usually the tops match the sneaks
2. dark avantegarde - pinakasimple very monochromatic na lahat ng shade ng black and grey
3. preppy - madalas contrasty colors at kung summer usually bright :)
4. tech wear - madalas monochromatic rin
5. old americana - madali lang just stick to raw denim then chambrays, oxford and madras top :)

what kind of black sneakers? converse-type?
for mustard pants, I would match it with either the following:
Match 1:
white shirt, mustard pants, dark brown leather shoes.
Match 2:
black shirt, mustard pants, black high-cut boots.
I think I prefer #2. Hope this helps.

I dont go for different jeans color kasi nga ang hirap hanapan ng match hehe. I only have shades of blue and black. It can be navy blue, dark blue or light blue, the same with black. Maybe I would try to have a gray jeans but still its a shade of black haha.
Sa age kong ito, hinde bagay sa akin ang mga preppy look. Doon ako lagi sa simple plain colors, ayoko muna magexperiment outside my comfort zone
Try to balance light and dark shades for tops and bottoms.
Siempre try reading magazines to get your rhythm.
There will always be some combinatins that might work for you, and not with others, vice versa.
