All we know is that there was an explosion. What I've heard is that, according to news, the level of radioactivity is around 1000 higher than normal near the plant in Fukushima.
On how radioactive particles travel, it depends on the wind.
They say the explosion was due to water vapor used for cooling. The thing blown apart was the wall that housed the reactor, not the reactor itself. The reactor is still protected by a metal casing, which serve as containment and a last line of defense.
They claim that the explosion actually helped because it released the pressure, which had fallen since the explosion. Radiation level was also falling.
They are currently filling up the reactor with seawater.

The third explosion might have damaged the vessel of reactor 2, which could be more serious than the first two explosions.
According to reports, higher than normal radiation levels have are now detected in Tokyo, but not yet seen as harmful.

Radiation levels around reactors are now a threat to human health, the Japanese government said Tuesday.
A fire has broken out at the number-four reactor at the quake-hit Fukushima No. 1 atomic power plant and radiation levels have risen considerably, Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan said.
People between 20-30 km from reactor should stay indoors, Kan said.
The situation is very, very bad. Reactor 2 might be in the course of a total meltdown.

Japan's earthquake shifted balance of the planet
Last week's devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan has actually moved the island closer to the United States and shifted the planet's axis.
The quake caused a rift 15 miles below the sea floor that stretched 186 miles long and 93 miles wide, according to the AP. The areas closest to the epicenter of the quake jumped a full 13 feet closer to the United States, geophysicist Ross Stein at the United States Geological Survey told The New York Times.
The 9.0 magnitude quake (the fourth-largest recorded since 1900) was caused when the Pacific tectonic plate dove under the North American plate, which shifted Eastern Japan towards North America by about 13 feet (see NASA's before and after photos at right). The quake also shifted the earth's axis by 6.5 inches, shortened the day by 1.6 microseconds, and sank Japan downward by about two feet. As Japan's eastern coastline sunk, the tsunami's waves rolled in.
Why did the quake shorten the day? The earth's mass shifted towards the center, spurring the planet to spin a bit faster. Last year's massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake in Chile also shortened the day, but by an even smaller fraction of a second. The 2004 Sumatra quake knocked a whopping 6.8 micro-seconds off the day.
After the country's 1995 earthquake, Japan placed high-tech sensors around the country to observe even the slightest movements, which is why scientists are able to calculate the quake's impact down to the inch. "This is overwhelmingly the best-recorded great earthquake ever," Lucy Jones, chief scientist for the Multi-Hazards project at the U.S. Geological Survey, told The Los Angeles Times.
The tsunami's waves necessitated life-saving evacuations as far away as Chile. Fisherman off the coast of Mexico reported a banner fishing day Friday, and speculated that the tsunami knocked sealife in their direction.
I have been reading a little bit about nuclear plant safety. I'll just summarize what I learned.
The plants in danger in Fukushima are said to be second-generation, as they were built 40 years ago during the 70s using the technology that time. They are more properly engineered than the one that exploded in Chernobyl in 1986, in the sense that they have more security and safety features in place. A source said they were engineered to withstand strong earthquakes (8.0 or 9.0 I think).
When the 8.9 earthquake struck, sensors in the plants detected it and automatically shut down the reactors. (This is one primary safety feature not found in the Chernobyl one, preventing from a devastating explosion.) However this automatic shutdown does not mean that fission in the reactors immediately stopped. Fission would still go on for some time (not sure for how long) which would need cooling to prevent overheating. There were actually backup diesel generators (I think these were for pumping water) to provide cooling for hours in case electricity went out. But unfortunately for Japan, the tsunami also destroyed these diesel generators and cut out the electricity for too long. (It was like a chain elemental combo.)
And so, as we know, there were already at least three explosions, which were allegedly hydrogen explosions due to high pressure water vapor. These water vapor were coolants (I think), and were contaminated with radioactivity.
From what I undertand, the container vessel of a reactor is supposed to guard against a meltdown and is supposed to withstand a theoretical maximum temperature and pressure of the reaction inside, preventing radioactivity from going out. Unfortunately, the third explosion reportedly damaged the container vessel of reactor 2.
As a last resort, engineers are currently risking their lives from the high dosage of radiation, pumping boron-rich seawater into the reactors to serve as coolant. The boron in seawater is supposed to slowdown the rate of fission.
Based on this, they say that it is extreme bad luck - massive failure in all systems all at the same time, which was not considered when the plants were built.
Nations with nuclear plants are now reassessing the safety of their own plants and nuclear policies.

I read somewhere that the current leaking radiation is not as life-threatening as people make it out. Of course, prolonged exposure should pose serious threats, but nothing short of another Chernobyl event should get you terribly worried, imho.

New power line almost ready at Japan nuke plant
TOKYO – A nearly completed new power line could restore electric cooling systems in Japan's tsunami-crippled nuclear plant, its operator said Thursday, raising hopes of easing the crisis that has threatened a meltdown.
Tokyo Electric Power Co. spokesman Naoki Tsunoda said the new power line to Fukushima Dai-ichi is almost complete. Officials plan to try it "as soon as possible" but he could not say when.
Meanwhile, conditions at the plant appeared to worsen Wednesday, with white smoke pouring from the reactor complex and a dangerous surge in radiation levels forcing workers to retreat for hours from their struggle to cool the overheating reactors.
The chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency said he would go to Japan as soon as possible to assess the danger. He called the situation serious and urged the Japanese government to provide better information to the agency.
The new line would revive electric-powered pumps, allowing the company to maintain a steady water supply to troubled reactors and spent fuel storage ponds, keeping them cool. The company is also trying to repair its existing disabled power line.
The word came as international concern mounted over the deteriorating situation at the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant, where the danger from the reactors has nearly overshadowed the human tragedy of last week's magnitude 9.0 earthquake and subsequent tsunami that pulverized Japan's northeastern coast and is feared to have killed more than 10,000 people.
The 180 emergency workers have been working in shifts to manually pump seawater into the reactors because last week's earthquake and tsunami disabled main and backup power for electric-powered cooling pumps.

I hope China would just set aside any historical grudges with Japan and help Japan recover. Given the resources and their proximity to Japan, China can potentially be a bigger help than the US.
Given that the situation is a catastrophe, and not war, China has done quite a lot to help. They too will be affected if they do not, what with another Chernobyl incident on the brink, among others. I read they've donated 6M Yuans (a tad stingy) money and $1.1M worth of resources to Japan, rescue teams, tech support, etc.

I am actually talking more about the nuclear crisis. Imagine if China sent back up power or coolant or whatever help early the nuclear crisis would not worsen to this stage.
It also seems like financial aid is not what Japan needs. They need more material resources and also equipment that would help rebuild the towns.
Financial aids are always welcome. They help rebuild towns, and mobilize resources, among others.
You can't really blame China for their below-expected involvement in quelling the nuclear situation, or any countries for that matter. Recently, Japan is being criticized for not assessing the situation fast enough, and to coordinate information. The plant's company director even said that the officials should have admitted earlier how serious the radiation leaks were.
Ah, yes that's true doc. They were overwhelmed by twin disasters, earthquake and tsunami, and they admitted not drafting this far into disaster preparedness. Noone would have been prepared for such.
But the way I understood that article, doc, is that they did know what was going on (re: severity of nuke leaks) it's just that they (the government) did not want to divulge it timely. It's understandable as they probably want to prevent even more panic (among other reasons). All they said, was that there is a leak, but it is contained, yet rad tests abroad testify otherwise. Sure I am no expert regarding radiation, and they probably picked the best possible solution at that moment in time, and moreso under pressure, but the public and international organizations that need to be concerned must know things timely.
Of course, this issue is of least concern. Force majeur would have it that any efforts hereon would be desperate - this we all know. After all, this is a catastrophe.

Japan's world-class transportation infrastructure couldn't withstand this month's 9.0-magnitutde quake, but their construction teams are still amazing. This stretch of highway was repaired in just six days by a Herculean road crew. This is the triumph of Japanese engineering. The March 11th quake and tsunami crushed roads, destroyed bridges, twisted trains tracks, and otherwise did to Japan what your little brother did to your ideal Sim City creation when you weren't looking.

A stretch of the Great Kanto Highway in Naka, Japan looked like the huge crater above on March 11th. The shaking left a 150-meter crack along the main section of the road. Given the massive and widespread damage the workers, many of whom returned to work the next day, likely didn't have long to appreciate their work before moving on to the next piece of cratered earth.

Crews from highway repair company NEXCO arrived to start repairing the damaged highway on March 17th. By the end of the day on March 23rd the road was opened to traffic.
Just remember this the next time you hit Lake Shore Drive and notice the same pothole that's been there for eight months.
