"Football is not this, football is not putting eight players in front of the area with no offensive system," he claimed. "They were fighting and I respect the players but if you think this is football then you are wrong."
The Philippines pulled off the competition's biggest upset by beating Vietnam, the defending champion, in front of 40,000 Vietnamese fans at the My Dinh National Stadium on Sunday night.
Goals from Chris Greatwich and Phil Younghusband and goalkeeper Neil Etheridge's clean sheet secured the victory for the Azkals.
Calisto said the Philippines "put the bus in front of the goal," describing the 2 flanks of defenders and midfielders that Philippine XI coach Simon McMenemy deployed against the Vietnamese.
"My way is different. You can play and lose but you can lose with honour. They didn't have an offensive system," Calisto said.
"I told my players that the Philippines defend very well but they don't care about counterattacking, they only pay attention in defence. Until you score one goal, our job is very difficult and I told the players that. If you look at possession of the ball, if you look at shots, if you look at crosses maybe there was 70 or 80 percent for Vietnam and 20 or 30 percent for Philippines," he added.
Calisto refused to shake McMenemy's hand after the match.
McMenemy said he was taken aback by the insult.
"It kind of upset me at the time just simply because his only word to me... were 'I won't shake your hands, You're not a fair play guy," he said in an interview over Skype with ANC's The Rundown on Monday.
"That's something I don't... I maybe fairly young in a job of this standing but I won't take that disrespect off anybody. For him not to shake my hand... "I think more than anything, [it was] a real lack of class," McMenemy said.
3 scoring chances, 2 goals
The Philippines' British mentor, meanwhile, said the victory has yet to sink in.
"I'm pinching myself, I'm not sure we have done what we have done," said McMenemy. "I keep thinking I'll wake up in bed in the Sheraton hotel and we'll still have the game to play."
"We knew we could defend, we knew we were disciplined enough but we didn't know if we could go up the other end and score goals. We knew that would be our issue so we worked hard in training on simple things like converting breakaways when we are on the run," he said.
Before the match, McMenemy had revealed that he will use a counter-attacking tactic against the Vietnamese.
"That was an incredible feat considering they are the Philippines and where they have come from. To go and turn over a powerhouse like Vietnam is incredible. If you keep working hard the luckier you get. We had three chances and scored twice," McMenemy told the AFF website.
The Azkals, who are now on top of Group B, will only need to draw their next match against Myanmar on Wednesday to advance to the semifinals.
Vietnam, meanwhile, will have to beat fellow ASEAN football powerhouse Singapore before advancing to the knockout stage.

at least there is a huge chance for another sport not starting with B... (we usually have basketball, boxing, billiards and bowling - kaya rin stuck with a B, bronze.)

Sched of 2011 Home-games for Azkals so far: vs Mongolia Feb 9, end of June World Cup Qualifier, 4-Team International Invitational to be hosted here in October. Their inviting Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, or Vietnam. So at the least ABS-CBN Sports will air 5 home games this year. June and Oct games most likely will be held in Rizal Memorial already.

MANILA---Mongolia isn't giving away its home-field edge in their AFC Challenge Cup qualifying series with the Philippines.
Philippine Football Federation president Mariano "Nonong" Araneta yesterday said the Mongolian federation has rejected his proposal to stage Mongolia's "home" game in the Philippines.
The first leg will be played at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City on Feb. 9. Mongolia moved its home game from Feb. 16 to March 15 at the National Stadium in Ulan Bator.
Araneta, who is in Doha, Qatar, for the AFC Congress, said the AFC has already approved Mongolia's move to reschedule the match because of the extremely cold weather in February.
The Philippines missed a chance to host one of the two legs of the Suzuki Cup semifinal last month, after the Panaad was deemed unfit for the event.
Indonesia won the two semifinal legs via similar 1-nil scorelines in Jakarta.
The winner of the PH-Mongolia series will complete the group that includes host Bangladesh, Palestine and Myanmar. The group stage starts March 20.
The core of the team that saw action in the Suzuki Cup will be back for the Challenge Cup, but the Azkals will also be beefed up by Filipino-Danish players Jerry Lucena and Dennis Cagara, as well as Filipino-German Stephan Schrock.
Meanwhile, team manager Dan Palami said the German Football Association has agreed to help the PFF with technical assistance, training for coaches, and equipment, as well as help map out a realistic grassroots program.

The Philippine Azkals were a shadow of their reputation and fell to the Kanto Gakuin University football team, 4-0, yesterday in the first of their friendly duel in Gotemba City, Japan.

fan ako ni phil, sa kanyang galing sa sport. top scorer siya sa youth niya sa chelsea, pero ayaw ko talaga nagshoshowbiz siya. sa tingin ko, ang mga tao lang din sa showbiz nag-glamourize nya sa spot. matagal na man din siya model (3yrs ago?) bat ngaun lang nka-spotlight ang showbiz sa kanya?
para sa akin, as long as di ito nakkaepekto sa kanyang paglaro, ok lang. if you're a true fan, you support the game, support the team, love the sport.

The Azkals will be part of Group A where they will face the host, Palestine (March 23) and Bangladesh (March 25). The top two squads after the single-round tourney qualify for the eight-nation main draw in 2012. Sadly, di ma-cocover ng Studio 23 ito.
Tungkol ky Phil, di siya mkkapaglaro next game, pero good news, Etheridge will be playing! :) Meron din sila dalawang bagong options: William Espinosa and Filipino-Spanish Angel Aldeguer Guirado. Also, coach Weiss won't be there for the next game.

Those who win sa round one (8 teams), kakalabanin nila ang isa't isa pati yung nasa top 6-27 (Saudi Arabia, Iran, Qatar, Uzbekistan, UAE, Syria, Oman, Jordan, Iraq, Singapore, China, Kuwait, Thailand, Turkmenistan, Lebanon, Yemen, Tajikistan, Hongkong, Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan, Maldives, India) on July 23 - July 28 sa round two. Tapos yung 15 qualified teams will join yung top 5 (Japan, South Korea, Australia, DPR Korea, Bahrain) sa round three on Sept 2, Sept 6, Oct 11, Nov 11, Nov 15 and Feb 29, 2012. Sa round four, madidivide yung 10 qualified teams into 2 group of 5 teams each. Sa round 5, yung dalawang 3rd place, maglalaban to play sa intercontinental playoff on Oct 15 and Nov 19, 2013.

Last saturday nagpafootball clinic ang club namin para sa mga newbie sa upcoming Company Football League. Wow! ang daming pumunta! may apat akong tinuruan na bago. Nakikinig naman sila sa mga sinasabi ko kaya kahit galing ako sa sakit, tinuro ko sa kanila ang mga nalalaman ko; like passing, dribbling, control, trapping and of course defending. Sayang lang kinapos kami sa oras di kami nakaproceed sa shooting.
After the clinic I saw a little kiosk(tama ba?) nagbebenta ng Azkals T-shirt, kaso di ko trip ang design(mahal). hehehe ;D
And kanikanina lang I checked the registration site for our Football League, 347 players ang nagregister! :o

Boosted by their opening triumphs four days earlier, Vietnam and Nepal continued their dominance in the returns as they rounded off their opening-round campaign with unblemished records. Bangladesh and Palestine, meanwhile, also made it through courtesy of their first-leg wins despite drawing against Pakistan and Afghanistan respectively.

The game
Philippines 4-0 Sri Lanka
History was made as Philippines stormed into the second round for the first time. Cheered on by their vociferous home crowd, coach Michael Weiss' Azkals dominated the re-match with Sri Lanka from the outset. Shining the brightest, however, was their ace-striker Phil Younghusband, who score two and set up another as his side powered through.
The former Chelsea reserve player first teed up Emelio Caligdong to open the scoring after 19 minutes, before he was on target to set up a 2-0 first-half lead. After Angel Guirado made it 3-0 shortly after the interval, Younghusband struck a penalty on the hour-mark to seal the 4-0 win. Philippines went through 5-1 on aggregate and awaiting them next are Kuwait, with whom they have to battle it out over two legs on 23 and 28 of July for a place in the third round.

Azkals eye medal finish in SEA Games
THE Philippine Azkals are now on the thick of preparations for grabbing the country's first football medal in the 26th Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia this November.
Long regarded as minnows in the region, the Azkals' exploits here and abroad proved that the team can now compete against better teams such as Singapore, Vietnam, and Malaysia, team manager Dan Palami said in a briefing.
"The intention is finally for the team to bag its first medal in the Southeast Asian Games. And of course, we need to meet a weaker team in the semis so that we'll have a (chance for that) medal," he said.
Coach Michael Weiss, currently in vacation in his hometown Germany after the failed 2014 World Cup campaign, will resume training with the country's Under-23 squad and other senior Azkal members on August 24.
In the original Azkals line-up, Palami said 21-year-old goalkeeper Neil Etheridge has expressed interest to play for the Philippines while they are still trying to sign up 20-year-old midfielder Jason de Jong.
Other members will be selected from the 30-man pool as he kept mum on details with regard to the final roster of the Indonesia-bound players.
"We will also bring them (Under-23 team) to the Long Teng Cup (in October) so that they will gain experience from an international competition," Palami said.
After the four-nation Long Teng Cup in Taiwan, the team will also mix it up with powerhouse teams in the Gulf Region along with India and Pakistan.
The Azkals proved their critics wrong in December 2010 when they booked a ticket to the semifinals of AFF Suzuki Cup for the first time after overpowering former champion Vietnam and drawing powerhouse Singapore and Myanmar in the group stage.
They also made history after qualifying to the main draw of the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup last February and moving into the second round of the 2014 World Cup eliminations in July.
The Azkals, however, kissed their World Cup dreams goodbye for the meantime after losing 5-1 on aggregate, to Kuwait Al-Azraq. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
