Pinay makes it through American Idol audition

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin - A young Filipina singer was among the best who auditioned last night on popular FOX talent show, American Idol.

Fifteen-year-old Thia Megia wowed judges Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson with her rendition of Adele's "Chasing Pavements".

During her segment on Idol, the Mountain House, California high school student said that she originally planned on auditioning next year.

"But when I heard about the age reduction (from 16 to 15 years old), I just immediately booked a flight and hotel and we just flew straight to Wisconsin.  I knew there was going to be an audition in California but I couldn't summon the patience to wait," she said.

Once she walked in and introduced herself, Lopez immediately noted that Megia had a name of a movie star.

After her audition piece, Lopez commented: "I love you.  You're the total package."

Tyler said: "I love your voice.  I thought it had character."

Megia is going to Hollywood, after receiving 3 votes from the judges.

Megi was a semi-finalist on America's Got Talent, a talent show on NBC, in 2009.  She guested on Balitang America last March to promote her local shows in the Bay Area.

Filipinos listed among Oscar nominees Manila Bulletin
MANILA, Philippines - Two artists with Filipino blood earned nods at the prestigious 83rd Academy Awards: rising actress Hailee Steinfeld and cinematographer Matthew Libatique. The 14-year-old Steinfeld, who received rave reviews for her performance in the Coen Brother's ''True Grit,'' is up for a Best Supporting Actress trophy. She is nominated alongside Amy Adams and Melissa Leo (both from ''The Fighter''), Helena Bonham Carter (''The King's Speech''), and Jacki Weaver (''Animal Kingdom''). Steinfeld beat 15,000 other hopefuls who auditioned for the part of Mattie. In her feature-film debut, she stars together with multi-awarded actor Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon. Apart from Steinfeld's nomination, ''True Grit'' also scored nine other nods including for Best Actor (for Bridges), Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay. The California native's mother, Cheri, is a Filipino interior designer while her father, Peter, is a Jewish personal fitness trainer. Steinfeld told Today that she was asleep at home when the announcement of the Oscar nominees was made on Jan. 25. ''I [just] heard my mom and dad screaming in the other room. They came in my room with flowers. It was very exciting. It's incredible. I'm in shock. The film overall is incredible. To be a part of it all was amazing. I'm so proud of it all,'' she related. Young sensational singer Justin Bieber, with whom she presented an award at the recently concluded Golden Globes, congratulated Steinfeld over his highly-followed Twitter account. ''met at the Globes and she is super talented. CONGRATS to Hailee Steinfeld for being 14 and getting nominated for an OSCAR for TRUE GRIT!'' he exclaimed. Aside from the Oscar nod, Steinfeld is also nominated in the same category at the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA), among others. The London Film Critics Circle, British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) and the Screen Actors Guild, meanwhile, selected her as one of the nominees for Best Actress. Considered as one of the most promising young stars in Hollywood, Steinfeld is a favorite among fans to star in the film adaptation of ''The Hunger Games.'' ''That's definitely an honor. I didn't even realize that people were mentioning my name. And, again, it's every actor's dream to be recognized for something that they love to do, and to get recognized for that is pretty amazing. I thank the people out there who think that...'' she previously told MTV News. Libatique, on the other hand, merited a nod for his work in the psychological thriller ''Black Swan.'' He goes head-to-head with Wally Pfister (''Inception''), Danny Cohen (''The King's Speech''), Jeff Cronenweth (''The Social Network''), and Roger Deakins (''True Grit''). ''Black Swan,'' which is nominated in five Oscar categories, is one of the several projects he has collaborated with director Darren Arofnosky, a fellow alumnus at the American Film Institute (AFI). They earlier teamed up for ''Pi,'' ''Requiem for a Dream,'' and ''The Fountain.'' Libatique's works can also be seen in Spike Lee's ''She Hate Me'' and ''Inside Man,'' as well as Joel Schumacher's ''The Number 23'' and ''Phone Booth.'' Although his parents are both Filipinos, Libatique was born in Elmhurst, Queens in New York. He started out shooting music videos (such as Tracy Chapman's ''Give Me One Reason,'' The Cranberries ''Just My Imagination'' and The Cure's ''Taking Off'') before crossing over to film.

Nat Geo lists Palawan among best places to visit
(http://tripmart.com.ph/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/steve-vidler-outriggers-at-el-nido-bascuit-bay-palawan-philippines.jpg)
National Geographic Traveler listed Palawan in the Philippines among the "20 Best Trips of 2011."

One of the world's most respected publications praised Palawan for its "limestone karst cliffs, coral atolls, mangrove forests, sugar-white sandy beaches, and extensive fringing reefs [that] create one of the Philippines' most biodiverse terrestrial and marine environments."

Top spots of Palawan were also highlighted in the National Geographic website:

"On the main island (also named Palawan) near Sabang, hike the three-mile (five-kilometer) Monkey Trail to Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park's navigable underground river. The five-mile (eight-kilometer) coastal rain forest route is home to long-tailed macaques, blue-naped parrots, and other indigenous wildlife.

"In the province's northern Calamianes islands, Coron Island is considered one of the world's top scuba diving destinations, offering World War II-vintage wreck diving and snorkeling in calm, crystalline waters. Nearby Culion Island, a former leper colony surrounded by sea grass beds and coral reefs, is an emerging ecotourism destination worth a day trip."

Nat Geo first heralded Palawan "one of the best destinations in the world" back in 2007, for its "incredibly beautiful seascapes and landscapes."

Apart from its magazine, the National Geographic Channel has also put its spotlight on Palawan, the fish and wildlife sanctuary of the Philippines since 1967, on some its programs, such as "Word Travels."

Orcollo registers spectacular win

MANILA, Philippines - If there are still doubts whether his name should be mentioned in the same breath as Filipino pool legends Efren ''Bata'' Reyes and Francisco ''Django'' Bustamante, Dennis Orcollo lifted it all with a spectacular victory Saturday.

The former fisherman from Bislig in Surigao del Sur completed a glorious week by conquering Niels Feijen of The Netherlands, 10-3, in the finals to reign as the new World 8-Ball king at the Fujairah Exhibition Centre in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The victory cemented Orcollo's status as one of the best cue artists of his generation as he became only the sixth Filipino world champion and third Filipino 8-ball titleholder.

The others in the elite list of champions include Reyes (9-ball - 1999, 8-ball - 2005), Bustamante (9-ball - 2010), Alex Pagulayan (9-ball - 2004), Ronnie Alcano (9-ball, 8-ball in 2006 and 07), and Rubilen Amit (10-ball - 2009).

Cheered by a boisterous Filipino crowd who watched the game, Orcollo led from start to finish on the way to pocketing the winner's purse of $40,000 (roughly P1.76 million), a windfall much too big than his P300 earnings he gets for two nights out in the seas of Mindanao before.

Feared in the money game circuit, Orcollo came through with superb break and exquisite shot-making as the ''Money Game King'' won the lag and zoomed to a commanding 5-0 lead.

Feijen, who settled for second place for the second straight year, threatened after that by stringing up three racks to pull within 3-5, but a costly mistake in the ninth rack doomed his bid.

It was a sweet victory for the Orcollo, who had to battle back from the loser's side to claim the title, which he nearly won four years ago.

He came close to winning the same mint in 2007, but lost to Alcano in the finals also in the UAE.

The triumph extended Orcollo's sizzling streak that started three months ago when he beat compatriot Warren Kiamco to bag the gold medal in the 9-ball event of the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China.

He also ruled the United States Derby City Classic 9-Ball tournament on his 32nd birthday last January 28 in Indiana, where he bagged $25,000 (about P1.1 million).

For winning gold at the Asian Games, Orcollo will be named as one of the ''Athletes of the Year'' by the Philippine Sportswriters Association, joining Bustamante and fellow Asian Games gold medalists in boxing Rey Saludar and Biboy Rivera in bowling.

Orcollo, whose love for billiards began by playing with marbles placed on a makeshift table, and others are scheduled to receive the awards on Saturday at the historic landmark Manila Hotel.

Orcollo's feat also affirmed the country's status as the world's billiards hotbed as he became the second Filipino world champion in a span of seven months - or after Bustamante hoisted the World 9-Ball title in Doha, Qatar last July 5 at the expense of Taiwanese Kuo Po-Cheng, 13-7.

Julaton retains WBO title

MANILA, Philippines - Ana "The Hurricane" Julaton put on a display of boxing skills to dominate Franchesca Alcanter and retain her World Boxing Organization (WBO) super-bantamweight title Saturday at the Craneway Pavilion Point Richmond in California, USA. The 30-year-old Filipino-American champion kept the challenger at bay with her powerful lead left jab and solid combinations to control the 10-round title bout and successfully defend her 122-lbs belt she wrested from Maria Elena Villalobos last July. Julaton won by scores of 98-92, 97-93, and 96-94. She improved to 8-2-1 overall. "I just kept her away with those left jabs of mine," said Julaton after the fight. "I know Franchesca would be bringing her A-game in the ring, but I was ready for it." Alcanter, dubbed "The Chosen One," fell to 18-10 (9KOs) and failed in her fifth and latest attempt to win a world title. The challenger, 37, never got on track, as she was mostly forced on the defensive end by Julaton's aggressive stance. She had her best moment in the sixth round when she connected on a straight right that shook the champion a bit. But in all, Julaton, now based in Daly City, California, but whose parents are from Pozzorubio, Pangasinan, had Alcanter under her spell, rocking the challenger on the ropes several times with punishing left and rights. By the end of the bout, Alcanter was left with a bloodied nose and sported a welt under her right eye. Julaton's promoter Allan Tremblay said a possible fight in the Philippines is likely next for Julaton, depending on how she recovers from her first title defense. For Julaton though, fighting before her countrymen is definitely a big honor for her. "Hello, Philippines. I dedicate this fight to all of you out there," she said in the post-fight interview also shown by TV5 and Aksyon TV41. "I can't wait to be there again."
