Gym Guide (part 2): Fitness First

This is part 2 of a series of posts talking about popular gyms in the country.

Fitness First is perhaps the most popular gym in the metro. Reason? They have so many branches, mostly in malls, making them the most accessible gym in the Philippines.

First Impressions: Nice and plenty equipment

The first thing that will catch your attention upon entering Fitness First (especially in their new branches) are their numerous, big, high-quality TechnoGym fitness equipment. If you ever had the chance to be toured by their staff inside the gym, you will see a lot of equipment which are obviously imported.

Having numerous equipment is a big advantage for its members because you wouldn’t have to wait for one person to finish exercising before you are able to use the equipment. You can use it anytime you want.

Aside from having lots of equipment, you will notice too that unlike other gyms, you do not need to bring your own padlock because their lockers are already equipped with its own lock.

One thing about their facilities though that makes me wonder is why they are serving softdrinks as part of their free privileges. I mean, most people are there to lose weight and eat healthy so why the need for it?

People and Trainers

Depending on the branch, you’ll see that the population working out at Fitness First are 60% male and around 40% female. You will also see some high-profile people and celebrities working out there (just like in Gold’s Gym) which means that it’s a high-class gym. Based on the kind of people who work out, it appears to me that Fitness First is more of a “tone the muscles” gym instead of a body building gym like Gold’s.

The club prides itself in their 1:1 trainer-trainee ratio. However, I found out that getting a personal trainer is not cheap. I don’t mean to generalize but I have also been told that if you are a guy, and you are a beginner, you might be a little overwhelmed by their trainers since they usually push people to the limit. This may seem like a good thing for intermediate to expert gym-goers but for beginners, it may be a bad thing. Anyway, I’m not referring to all trainers but only some. It’s up to you to check them out.

Rates

These are the rates for Fitness First regular branches.

1 year home membership (workout at 1 branch only): 2,500 Pesos per month
1 year passport membership (workout at any of Fitness First regular branches): 2,600 Pesos per month

4 months home membership (workout at 1 branch only): 2,800 Pesos per month
4 months passport membership (workout at any of Fitness First regular branches): 2,900 Pesos per month

Note that actual rates may vary. They accept credit cards for monthly installments or cash if you wish to pay in full. They also have an admin fee and it varies from branch to branch.

In case you were wondering, Fitness First also has two premium branches with higher membership costs. These branches are called Fitness First Platinum (one of which is located in Trinoma and the other in RCBC Plaza). These branches are exclusive because they have added facilities and privileges. I think they cost above 3,500 per month the last time I checked. Could anyone confirm?

  • you can also add that they have several classes and even hot yoga available at no additional cost.

they are so strict with membership termination and freezing of accounts. if you decide to join, make sure you will be committed to exercise.. or else youd have to pay quite a big amount.

  • This is great stuff but in my opinion I would just go for low-profile gyms with a considerable amount of amenities but not too tight on the budget. I believe that it is your motivation and discipline that take a greater weight.

Some people socialize more in the gyms than exercise and some even go to the gym for hook-ups which should not be. The progress you’ll make depends largely on you.

  • try not renewing your membership and you’ll see why a lot of people hate Fitness First. Even when you tell them beforehand that you’re not going to renew they still keep on charging monthly fees to your account. This goes on for MONTHS before they take any action. Napakahirap ng process just to terminate a membership. And their personal trainers? expensive na nga, tapos most of them don’t even know what they’re talking about. If you want a high class gym, then go to Gold’s Instead. Sa Fitness First, Fitness doesn’t come first, peperahan lang nila kayo.

  • “Depending on the branch, you’ll see that the population working out at Fitness First are 60% male and around 40% female.”

    – and probably 40% out of the 60% are gays.

  • Doppler – I have also heard some people having problems terminating their membership. Is this true even if you have completed your contract?

  • yes, membership in rcbc (platinum) costs around 3,500.. to be exact, they offered me Php3,400.00 / month just last week

  • Well i don’t like Fitness First, gays are overflowing (fyi i have no problem with gays) the thing that i dont like is the security especially with goodlooking guys like me, these gays keep on opening my shower cubicle cant even count how many times and ive been reporting this ever since but they are doing nothing, its really disturbing so i canceled my account.

  • Does anyone know any other cheaper gyms or dance classes in metro manila? please share some info, price, location, etc. Thanks. Will appreciate any help. 😀

  • Used to be a member here. I got a trainer as well. I told the trainer the specifics of my condition and he patterned a workout that I could do. In the duration of my stay there I had the chance of familiarizing myself with the exercises and sports that’s well suited for me. Didn’t have a problem terminating my account. Now I’m training in a gym near my home using what I learned from my trainer there.

  • do you guys know how mush does it cost for only one session? because of my busy schedule, i only find time to go to the gym.

  • it’s true, you’ll be having a problem if u want to terminate your membership w/ them. Parang buysitin can before u get out w/ them. Yong inis mo ikapapayat mo, he, he. Kaya siguro ganon.Para sabihin sa Fitness ka pumayat.
I signed a 1 yr membership w/ them supposed to be i was just freezing my account w/ them. so, I tell this to the staff at the recep. Umoo naman then, I was surprised to be charged the whole amount. When i complained about this they told me that there should be a written notice 1 month before, verbal notification is not honored, The problem they did not informed me na its should be written ino oohan lang ako ng buysit na staff na kausap ko. Di sa inis ko, i just termenated my membership w/ them. Lalo pa ako binuysit. Since the notification should be 1 month before, alangan yong date, it was still extented for 2 months more. SUWAPANG & MUKHANG PERA TALAGA!

  • FOR CANCELLATION OF MEMBERSHIP ASK FOR A CANCELLATION FORM, FILL IT UP & MAKE SURE THAT IT WILL BE SIGNED BY THIER SUPERVISOR OR FRONT OF THE HOUSE MANAGER & KEEP YOUR COPY SAFELY.DON’T EVER LEAVE W/O YOUR COPY SIGNED BY THEM. yOU ALSO HAVE TO DO THIS ON THE 1ST DAY OF THE MONTH & WILL TAKE EFFECT BY END OF THE SAME MONTH. SO, IF YOUR ABLE TO DO THIS SAY AUG.1,END OF AUG NA LANG MEMBERSHIP MO. SEPTEMBER THEY SHOULD NOT CHARGE U ANYMORE. AND LASTLY, BE FIRM WITH YOUR DECISION TO TERMINATE BEC THEY ARE LOT OF CASES THEY WON’T JUST ACCEPT YOUR REASON. PAIKOT IKUTIN KA. READ THE THREAD AT PINOY EXCHANGE-BAD EXPEREINCES W/ FF PARTICULARLY AT PAGES 57-59. GOOD LUCK!!!

  • TRUE! Bibwisitin ka talga ng Fitness First! Even if you are sick, pregnant or out of the country you have to stick it out with them for a year. Hostage and credit card mo. Even the credit card cannot do anything to stop Fitness First from charging because of auto debit. Mukang pera ang Fitness First! DO NOT ENROLL there! Pre-termination of the contract comes with a fee! Not just a minimal fee…yung tipong fee na maiiyak kang bayaran! Pag finreeze mo account mo delayed ang processing nila so pag kita mo sa credit card mo naka charge pa rin the WHOLE amount for the month. Ang pag finreeze mo hindi sya counted sa 1 year contract mo. Lalong madadagdagan ang months you have to stay with them to complete the 1 year kaya tuloy tuloy ang charge sa credit card mo. DO NOT DARE LET THEM HAVE ACCESS TO YOUR CREDIT CARD. Hold up nila card mo!

  • I just want to share my mom’s bad experience in FF MOA.. She enrolled for 1 yr membership but after a few months she had a knee injury because of an accident (not in the gym, but somewhere else). So she requested to freeze her membership because I think she still has 6 more months remaining and as per doctor’s advise, she cannot workout for a few months because her knee was on cast and she needs to recover for a few weeks or months after the cast has been removed. Although my mom said she would still pay for the remaining 6 months to be fair, the only condition she asks was to freeze the membership until she fully recovers and then that’s the time she will continue. Unfortunately, FF denied her request! And the only thing they told my mom was they can make her a program/ exercise routine to follow without using the knee and they told her to avoid attending classes which will hurt her knee! WTF! She paid the unused months without any consideration. End of story.

  • Is it possible to cancellthe personal training contract in FITNESS FIRST. I still have 14 sessions with my trainer. feels like I wasted 15,000 pesos for shitty trainer. Yes she was ok from the start, maybe because she wanted me to avail the training program. She’s a real talker, You’ll be carried away. so we became close, to thepoint that she proclaimed that she’s a lesbian!! and these “closeness” where I dont get any benifits of real training that I paid, plus the fact that she’s being comfortable and our sessions became like a joke for me. And the most irritating thing is she’s always asking me to eat out and drink!! wtf?? Fitness First? professionalism pls. I feel like I can do workout better, honestly! I really want to cancel. does anyone have the same experience? please share!! this is from Trinoma Branch. take note. Platinum Club.
