Men’s shoes are expensive… and dull!

I’m talking about men’s leather shoes, that is. I just arrived home after my quest for buying a new pair of leather shoes and what did I realize? That men’s shoes today are expensive… and dull!

Expensive
Think about this. Ordinary men’s shoes are around a thousand pesos while the average ones are 2,500 Pesos at minimum. They are indeed expensive compared to the same brand and quality of women’s shoes which are usually only half the price.

So have you ever wondered why men’s leather shoes are so expensive? Well that is for the simple reason that guys don’t buy shoes as often as women do. Men buy shoes as a necessity. Women buy it as a collection.

Dull
Aside from being expensive, there is one thing that bothers me these days. Why is it that the latest styles of men’s shoes are dull? Remember the good old days when men’s shoes are a bit glossy? Not as glossy as that of security guards’ but just the normal shine in shoes? I miss that because shoe manufacturers these days seem to be producing shoes which are no longer shiny. Perhaps it’s the trend but I’m not sure.

I guess that they knew that we had always been lazy in polishing, so shoes nowadays went from this…

men's leather shoes (shiny)

Men’s shoes (shiny)

to this…

men's leather shoes (dull)

Men’s shoes (dull)

So if I were to ask you, which do you prefer? The shiny ones or the dull ones?

  • u hve to pay way more than 2,5kPesos if u really
want a nice pair of leather dress shoes. my advice is
try lookin at Salvatorre Ferragamo or at Prada,
they got the best selections for dress shoes.
u myt also like sum styles of dress shoes frm
Dolce and Gabbana, Costume National, Gucci,
Bally, Cole Haan, Burberry Prorsum, Fendi,
Louis Vuitton, Hermes, Emporio Armani, Diesel,
but most of em’ aren’t ur usual pair of
plain black shiny dress shoes (u know wat i mean).
Its gona b a head turner im uber xure of that!!
(price ranges from a few benjamins to a lot of benjamins!)
sometimes you really have to be a frivolous big spender…
there’s a little Imelda in all of us remember?!

  • its not dull. its style. if its not that shiny, it becomes more casual – i think. you can go for the really big brands, they offer new styles and not dull ones.

  • i think the dull shoes are ok.
and besides, bawal sa amin pag nakaduty duty ang shiny shoes

super shiny shoes = make-up duty

although those shiny shoes look good too.
it’s really hard to decide (^^,)

  • try Black Label Homme and Oleg Cassini in Rustan’s.
shoes are on sale from P3,950 to a whopping P999.

  • the current trend on dress shoes is to stay away from square toes…. regarding the texture and color you’d be surprise with the carpe diem collection, nope, mr. google can’t help you with that… it’s one of those brands that you won’t see in the world wide web. anyway, carpe diems exudes vintage worn-out look, their boots are too worn out that they look like coal miner’s beater boots. price? it average $1,500.

if you want to stick with the classic check these high end brand and $6,000 bespokes – kiton, santoni, bontoni…. fortunately, even our local mass produced ones are based on those classic designs

  • Those “shiny” shoes as pictured aren’t very popular in western culture,
the trend in Australia is the “dull” ones that do not have any laces.

The reason for their popularity is because many males wear them during social and formal occasions, the one pair of shoes for both types of occasions. Also these shoes display maturity as opposed to those who wear sneakers such as Air Force 1’s all the time.

But this is just my opinion.

  • Try Pedro at Trinoma and MOA. Very, very comfy and stylish.. and not too expensive. Never needed to look at another brand again. My first pair still looks almost new after almost a couple of years of wearing them.

They say a couple of expensive shoes is better than having four cheap ones.

  • I have to say I’m a fan of ‘glossy’ shoes; somewhere between matte and shiny. These tend to have a beautiful sheen to them, without being so “hard” and reflective as the traditional shiny variety, nor as dull and lifeless as the matte finish.

I also tend to find that the smooth, glossy shoes tend to match garments more easily than either of the other extremes.

  • I always dread about buying formal shoes because its hard to find a good shoes that is easy on the pocket. The good looking ones cost around 2500 to 3000 Pesos =(

  • i have a couple of favorites…
    a) Pedro
    b) Sledgers (they have a store in MOA, and i think they also sell them in Rest-o-Run stores)
    c) Wade (stylish, but very boorish looking heels that don’t seem to match the shoe overall; you just need to be picky in this store; love their bags though)
    d) Hush Puppies

i go for florsheim and ermengildo zegna if i want classier dress shoes… but who goes for those when you’re on a budget, right? besides, there are more affordable alternatives.

in terms of style, i go more for slip-ons and moccasins. easier when you’re on the go, plus they’re generally comfy. boat shoes are currently in vogue, but i’m not partial to it.

style wise — i go for plainer looking shoes that have leather work (cuts and engraving) or mixed tones (leather and suede mixes) as opposed to those clunky looking metal things attached to them. for one thing, it makes the shoe look tacky. second, you don’t want those things rusting and damaging your shoe in the long run.

men are supposed to have plainer looking shoes. they’re cool, and have a greater masculine appeal. i guess since men wear pants most of the time, we don’t get to show off most of the shoe… we just need to make sure what’s shown stands out, right?

i agree with the author when he mentions that men buy shoes as a necessity… but it’s the kind of necessity that makes a bold statement about who we are. it should fit our personality and our way of life.

  • zara sometimes offer good formal shoes which u can even wear with a jeans. (some sort of a driving shoes cum formal)
