Gym Guide (part 1): Gold’s Gym

This is part 1 of a series of posts talking about popular gyms in the country.

Gold\'s Gym photo

Last weekend, I got the chance to visit Gold’s Gym in Waltermart North Edsa. It has been quite a while since I visited one of their branches and this time I was stunned.

First Impressions: A Boxing Gym?

When I entered Gold’s Gym in Waltermart, my attention was caught by their boxing ring. Surprising isn’t it? It’s not common to see one in a fitness gym and if I remember it correctly, they never had a boxing ring the last time I checked one of their branches a few years ago. According to their staff, it’s a new feature of their gym after Elorde boxing gym was bought by Gold’s. Now, almost all Gold’s gym branches have a boxing ring so if you think you have the Manny Pacquiao in you, go ahead and check out any of Gold’s gym branches.

Boxing Ring

Equipment and People

I was toured by one of their personnel inside the gym. It’s not that big (compared to their other branches) but I was impressed by their equipment especially their complete line of weights, cardio equipment and if I may say it again – their boxing ring. I must admit that I really wanted to try to get into the ring (at least to have a feel what it’s like to be a boxer) but too bad, there was a boxing match the time I visited so maybe next time.

Their pieces of equipment are of superb and excellent quality. However, I think that they need to add more since there were only a few and I’m not sure if they are enough for all the gym-goers in that branch during peak hours. I would also like to add that you need to bring your own padlock for the lockers.

With their equipment suited for bodybuilding, I can say that Gold’s Gym is highly recommendable for those who want to get big muscles (just take a look at the logo of Gold’s Gym). I think that bodybuilders are their target market and is probably the main reason why there were only a few women working out when I visited.

Rates and Payment

Their staff was kind enough to explain to me their rates as follows:

UNLIMITED WORK-OUTS:

FEE: P25,200 – (good for 1 year: P2,100 per month)

FIXED NUMBER OF WORK OUTS – 144 visits per year (around 3 times per week):

FEE: P16,500 (good for the entire year: P 1,375 per month)

Note that actual rates may vary and this does not include the boxing facility. They accept credit cards for monthly installments or cash if you wish to pay in full.

If you will notice from the above rates, you will save more on a fixed number of sessions rather than unlimited. While this may give you less freedom to work-out whenever you feel like, I still think that it is more economical since the ideal number of times to exercise is 3-4 times a week, so it is definitely worth it!

But if you believe that you are a gym rat, I bet that the unlimited one is the right thing for you!

  • I also want to see what to go inside a Gold’s Gym. But a boxing ring??? heheh.. I don’t know if I will try that hehehe..

the rates are kinda high, not suitable for people who are on a budget.

  • hello chris thank for posting this great info.. i’ve recently quit my fitness first membership after one year, 2 trainers and 4 training packages with them.i’m currenly scouting for a new gym to workout at and this post convinces me that they have way better equip than ff. I do have a question though, did they give you any idea how much their trainer rates are? thanks chris…

  • hi raine, welcome to PGG. I wasn’t able to inquire about their trainer rates but I’ll try to inquire if I get the chance to pass by one of their branches soon.

  • Hi Chris, Can you compare GG Glorietta, NorthEDSA, and Galleria when it comes to equipments. Thanks 🙂

  • Hi Chris, that is very nice information for me to know more about Gold’s gym.By the way, is there any six month membership and how much is it there?

  • Hi, first of all thanks for the great info re: the top gyms in the philippines.

Just wanted to ask kung ano ba included dun sa fees ng Gold’s? (or other gyms for that matter) e.g., use of lockers, etc.

And yung bodybuilding program ba, sayo din manggagaling or may pino-provide sila?

    Thanks again!

  • hi brian, thanks and welcome to PGG.

The membership fees listed here includes the use of equipment and gym lockers. However, the three gyms differ in terms of amenities or perks.

For example, Fitness First has free group exercises and cycling classes. Not sure about Gold’s and Slimmers though.

Note that if you want a gym instructor, that is a separate fee and is usually expensive.

  • chris, ask ko lang paano pumunta sa waltermart if manggagaling ka sa updiliman?? gusto ko sana itry mag-gym sa gold’s gym e, kaso di ko alam kung anong way i could travel easily. thanks.

  • ^^ marc – from UPD? kailangan mo sumakay muna ng jeep to SM North EDSA (not sure kung ano signboard).

From SM North EDSA, sakay ka bus pa-Monumento. Baba ka sa Munoz.

    Hope this helps.

  • oh. i see. salamat chris,,
    yeah, from UPD.
malayo ba yung Munoz sa SM North Edsa??
pasensya na ha, di ako familiar sa lugar dito sa manila. 🙂

  • Thanks for the detaiiled information about Gold’s gym. Very useful…

Do you know if there’s any membership fee/join fee/admin fee when signing up with Gold’s gym ?

  • Marc – yes, malapit lang yun. Sorry late reply.

Stan – no probs. I don’t remember any joining fee. But that was a year ago.

  • Hi! Im Glad i found this review. I worked near waltermart, kaya i find it very convenient kung lilipat ako ng GOLD’s Gym.
pero sabi ng reviewer, more on body builders… Now im toning kasi, palagay nyo po ba okayyung equipments ng Golds for me?
    Salamat

  • all the info are very useful, thank you. Does Gold’s Gym have group exercises included in their membership fee like in FF? I get bored easily with equipment so i’m hoping for a variety of group exercises,

  • I am a member since 2010 and since then wala ako nirekla mo kahit na forever na sira yung wet and dry sauna ng golds gym glorietta. Now, there is an incident which involves the staff/trainor, the client, who unfortunately lost her wallet (kasi pinatago sa counter!) and the management. Anong klaseng reasoning yung kung sino pinag abutan yun ang kumuha.
what’s the use of the cctv?! Black and white cctv na hindi makita yung mukha ng mga tao! C’mon! we’re paying them hard earned money! To the management, review your company policY. if you want to give satisfactory and quality service to your clients, you have to start from within (your employees). Be fair! and pls. palitan mga bulok na gamit including the cctv

  • Alex – thanks for letting me know. Didn’t know that they increased their priced by that amount for 2013.

  • I’m not that much of a internet reader to be honest but your blogs really nice, keep it up!
I’ll go ahead and bookmark your website to come back down the road. Many thanks

  • I have been going to Gold’s Gym (WalterMart) for about 5 months now. Recently I’ve been seeing dirty locker room, broken and dirty workout equipment, cockroaches everywhere especially locker rooms, wet floors (dahil sa mga tulo ng aircon) and so and so forth. I think the reason for these problems is the lack of cleaning staff. Puro trainers nga sila pero when it comes to the gym’s sanitation kulang na kulang sila. To be frank I don’t think that everyone applied for a trainer because not everyone has the luxury and money for a personal trainer, pero nagkalat mga trainers nila kahit wala naman na silang magawa. Sana dagdagan nalang nila yung cleaning crew nila.

I go there almost everyday pero nakaka-depress na kung minsan. I hope that they can improve this para naman hindi sayang yung binabayad ng mga members.

  • i’d just like to know how much na yung monthly rate for 2014 yung may trainer and walang trainer na workouts. thanks

  • ^ I’ve been frequenting Gold’s in Waltermart and I’d like to respond to some of the queries here; unsolicited but hope it helps.

    > Trainer Fees – I was offered a 7,000 Php rate good for 10 sessions during my first consultation with a gym instructor at the Glorietta branch. I checked again with another trainer in Waltermart and the rate is the same. I can’t say it’s pricey though since I’m not sure what that personal training entails aside from… well, personal training. I’m ok with tips from the internet but I’ll definitely ask one of these days

    > Is Golds’ more apt for bodybuilders? – I can’t categorically respond but my goal since the very start is just toning muscles and it’s working out just fine at Golds. From how I see it, the set of facilities in Golds are flexible enough to accommodate any fitness goals one sets for oneself

    > Unclean? – Again, I don’t work in the HRM industry so I don’t know what the standards supposedly are. However, I’ve tried working out at the Waltermart branch for varying shifts and as long as I don’t nitpick off the occasional small roach or the early morning (6 am) lack of bathroom tissues, I’m actually satisfied with their cleanliness. At least, it’s waaaaaaay better than their Glorietta branch which I think has seen better days.

    > Trainers – are, at least, accommodating. They will not go all the way to show you how to do this & how to do that and I think it’s how the way things are; gym goers prefer their privacy and can only tolerate small talk. If you’re a first timer however, they’ll do their job: guide you through a small program and supervise you for your first 3 days. Beyond that, they’ll assist you when you ask.

    > What else? My tips – peak hours is at around 4-6 (I think) with a bit of waiting time for the threadmill, the dumbells & selected equpment. From my experience though, these times are opportunities to introduce variety to your usual routine i.e try alternative ways of strengthening your arms by carrying your own weight instead of relying on the machines & the weights. If that is a drag, then you can politely ask someone to take turns.

  • I’m not sure exactly why but this web site is loading very slow for me.
Is anyone else having this problem or is
it a problem on my end? I’ll check back later and see if
    the problem still exists.

  • Hi there, You’ve done a fantastic job. I will certainly digg it and personally recommend to my friends.
I’m sure they will be benefited from this website.

Feel free to visit my web site; gamesfree

  • hello.. Ask ko lang if kailangan ba one year agad ang babayaran if magpapamember ka. pwede bng monthly basis? gusto ko kasi itry muna since pinaka malapit sakin ang waltermart branch. thanks po 🙂

  • Anyone who has a corporate package with golds?? Pwede makiride?? Mine will be expiring soon. Golds Gloriieta, BGC and Alabang preferably. Thanks

  • Hi Jeorge,

I just currently enrolled and Alabang branch offered me a package, lumalabas na parang 700/session yung rate na binigay nia.
